The Rockport Adventures II

Secrets

After the friends had danced for well over an hour to the music flowing from the stereo they end up sitting around the dinner table once again. Cam sits with his back to the large glass door to the backyard, looking at his friends as he talks. Max sits across from him, having what seems to be a heated debate with Jade about school attendance policy. Adam and Kayla sit between Max and Cam talking to each other, Kayla leaning against Adam’s shoulder as Cam stands up, taking the cups off the table into the kitchen. Cam stands at the sink, his hands resting on either side of the polished silver as he looks down at the drain. His hair hangs down a little around his face, a brownish frame to all he sees. He turns and walks out of the kitchen, heading into the bathroom down the hall, standing in front of the mirror and slowly unbuttoning his black and red shirt, looking at the bandages on his ribs, he nods slowly before buttoning up his shirt and returning to his friends. Jade smiles as he walks back into the room “Ok Cam, what is your stand on the attendance policy?” Cam looks at her and smiles a little “As long as it doesn’t bother me I don’t care.” Max sighs and shakes his head “Why did you even ask him? He never has any opinion of his own.” Adam stands and looks at his watch “Hey guys, I think Kay and I are going to roll, it’s getting kind of late.” Kayla hugs her friends and Cam smiles “Well I hope you two had fun, I guess we’ll see you at school tomorrow.” Adam smiles and nods as he and Kayla head out the door. Max and Cam walk into Cam’s room, talking about their cars and Jade smiles to herself, deciding to take care of the dishes before Cam could, knowing he should be resting, not working. As she cleans the dishes she sees a pile of mail Cam had left on the counter earlier she glances at it, not really wanting to snoop. A symbol on one of the envelope catches her eye. The planet earth in a black circle with three lines crossing it with “INFINITY” across it, she recognizes the symbol from a major research company and she looks over her shoulder, making sure Cam isn’t around her curiosity gets the better of her and she pulls the letter from the open envelope. She scans the letter, a short, simple letter thanking Cam for his assistance on their latest project another piece of paper slips from the envelope and she picks it up, seeing it’s a check she glances at the amount and is surprised, seeing it is almost ten thousand dollars. She stares at the check for a long moment then she hears Cam and Max walking into the hallway and she quickly stuffs the check and letter back into the envelope. Cam looks at Jade as he walks into the kitchen, seeing her doing the dishes he sighs but says nothing, knowing it is futile to try and talk her out of something. Max looks at his watch and sighs, running a hand through his short hair “I guess I better head out too, I need to do some homework.” “See you later” Jade says as he starts heading out, then looks at Cam as he leans against the counter “Shouldn’t you be going as well?” he asks as she finishes loading the dishwasher. She looks at him then nods “I guess I should, you need anything before I go?” Cam looks at her “You know, just because I’m a little hurt doesn’t make me an invalid, I’m fine.” She smiles and hugs him softly “Okay, I’ll see you tomorrow” Cam walks with her to the door and she looks at him once again “You sure you don’t need anything?” Cam sighs and nods “Yes I’m fine. Go home Jade, get some sleep” Jade smiles then opens the door “I’ll see you later.” Cam waves as she gets into her car then he shuts the door, looking at his watch then looking up at a cabinet next to his refrigerator. He walks over and opens the doors of the cabinet, looking at the bottles inside. His eyes scan the labels looking from one bottle to the others before he raises and lifts a bottle of Absolute and sits it on the counter, opening his refrigerator he pulls out a carton of orange juice and pours himself a glass, then adding some Absolute to the glass he sits at the table, looking out the window into the night and sighs softly.

A few days later Cam stands next to a pool table in one of the local hang outs, a bar called “The Vault”. Cam watches a few girls go up and buy beers from the bar as Adam lines up a shot on the table. Cam watches the cue ball connect with one of Adam’s striped pool balls but the ball fails to fall into the pocket Adam was aiming for. “Shit” Adam says under his breath as Cam smiles and looks at his shot choices. Adam holds his cue up on his shoulders as he looks at Cam. “Haven’t seen the others tonight have you?” Cam nods and sinks a ball into the corner pocket “nope.” Adam smirks as Cam moves around the table looking at his shots when he accidentally bumps into a muscled black boy talking with some friends. Cam turns and looks at the boy from school and looks at his shirt, which the bump had spilled a large amount of beer onto. The boy, Tyrell Sands, looks at his shirt then at Cam “Look what you did you little shit!” One of Tyrell’s friends grabs his arm “Hey man cool it, it was an accident.” Tyrell looks at his friend “Fuck that shit man! He just ruined my new shirt, this cost me one hundred fifty dollars.” Cam looks at the shirt then back at Tyrell “You got ripped off friend.” Tyrell snarls a little “Ohh, now you think you’re funny?” Cam shrugs and turns, directly across from Adam he shoots missing the cue ball but watching as Adam closes his hands on Cam’s keys that he had tossed. Tyrell grabs Cam and turns his around as Adam starts walking toward the door. “I’m talking to you mother fucker! You fucked up my shirt, now what are you going to do about it?” Cam looks at Tyrell then over his shoulder as Adam slipped out the door holding the keys then Cam smiles at Tyrell “How about you let me go first.” Tyrell lets go for a second and Cam makes his move, swinging the pool cur low and hard, connecting with Tyrell’s crotch as he follows through with the force of the blow and lets gravity bring the top of the cue down on Tyrell’s head. As Tyrell’s friends watch as he falls Cam steps back still holding the cue in both hands. The four friends look at each other and then rush Cam. A group of girls screams as Cam and his attackers’ crash into their table, shattering glasses and bottles as Cam swings the cue as fast as he can, trying to defend against the attacks. Cam tosses the cue high into the air and as he had predicated the group of boys look up at it and he takes the opening, rushing past the group to the door. Cam bursts through the door, knocking over a couple making out as he does. The group follows him quickly and they surround him in the parking lot as Tyrell, having recovered from Cam’s attack joins the attackers. Cam looks around at the group of black men, watching for any sign of movement. Tyrell steps forward and grins a golden toothed grin “We’re gonna fuck you up good you little fuck!” he almost shouts at Cam. Suddenly a loud crack fills the air and Tyrell turns around, and sees Adam standing behind him with a large baseball bat “I think you should leave the gentleman alone” he says in an almost pleasant sounding voice, the undertone of aggression showing through his easy smile. The five black men look at Adam, then Tyrell holds up his hands “No problem man, I ain’t got no beef with you.” Adam steps forward, his tall frame towering over Tyrell “You’re trying to hurt my friend.” Tyrell looks over his shoulder at Cam who stands in the middle of the group then he scowls at Adam before moving back into the club the other men soon following him. Adam walks over to Cam and looks at his friend “You ok man?” Cam looks at his tall friend and nods slowly “Just another Saturday night huh?” Adam laughs and shakes his head slowly then helps his friend to Cam’s truck.

Jade stands under the water of her shower, letting it soak her long dark brown hair, plastering it against her lightly tanned body as she stands, lost in her thoughts as she goes through the mindless task of taking a shower. She thinks about the party at Cam’s, how she had felt safe and protected in his arms as they danced slowly to Phil Collins “True Colors.” She turns off the water still lost in her thoughts, slipping into her large fuzzy cotton robe. She stands looking in the mirror as she brushes her long hair, her mind still thinking about Cam, mostly her thoughts return to his most startling physical attribute. Most girls look at a guy’s mussels or simple physical attractiveness. Cam wasn’t the greatest in either category, but that didn’t matter to Jade what mattered were his eyes. Their startling bluish green color always caught her attention and kept it no matter what happened. If the eyes are the windows to the soul Cam, at least in her opinion, had the most beautiful soul she had ever seen. Jade softly sighs to herself as she steps into her room. She isn’t sure what she should do about her feelings for Cam. She doesn’t want to ruin their friendship if a relationship didn’t work out but she does feel strongly for him. She sits down at her computer and she sighs just staring at her desktop. The wallpaper of her desktop a large photo of Her, Kayla, Max, Adam, and Cam had been taken not too long ago for the school newspaper and she had gotten a copy. She sits back in her chair, staring at the ceiling as she continues to think.

Carl Miles sits at a computer looking at the information on the screen, reading student profiles, writing down the names of any, as Darius had stated, “Good marks.” Miles rubs his eyes softly, a little tired from staring at the damned computer screen for so long when the door to the room opens and a young man enters slowly. “Coach Miles?” The boy says looking at Miles “Yes?” Miles says without looking away from the computer. “The young boy with large glasses that dwarfed his face slowly moves forward and hands Miles a slip of paper, just another excuse to be let of from gym class. Miles simply takes the paper and nods. The boy smiles weakly and leaves shutting the door behind him. Miles softly sighs to himself as he tosses the paper into the trash. “How long do we have to keep up this damn charade?” he thinks to himself as he keeps looking through the profiles. The door opens again and Darius steps into the room and shuts the door behind him. Miles looks up and Darius says “Anything promising yet?” Miles nods slowly “Yeah, one so far. Girl named Jade Kalls. She’s the daughter of Microtech CEO Jordan Kalls. Darius smiles and nods “Good we can use her.” Miles nods slowly then pulls up another profile. “This one worries me though” Miles says, Darius moves next to Miles and looks at the profile. “Cam Callhoon” Darius says softly. “What’s so special about him?” Darius says looking at Miles. “He is in the top of his class, surprisingly good physical health and yet he lives alone, no parents or anything.” Miles says looking up at Darius. “So?” Darius asks. “How does an eighteen year old kid get the cash to buy a house?” Miles says. “I don’t give a shit Miles. If he doesn’t have the cash to pay for his releases he can go free when we let them all go.” Darius says standing up and heading to the door. After Darius leaves Miles looks at the picture of Cam and sneers. “That old fool can’t possibly know what you can do Cam, but I do and I won’t let my guard down.”
