Chapter Nineteen

“Hey Kevin. Welcome to my home!” I say smiling as I open the door.

“Hey Lucas. Lucas, Sam. Sam, Lucas.” Kevin gestures to the man next to him. The man is average height, short wavy brown hair and a kind smile. I give him a small wave and let them to enter my home.

“Hey. I’m James.” James shakes Kevin and Sam’s hands as I introduce them. “Nice to meet you guys but I’ve gotta run. I’m still cooking. Should be done in about thirty minutes.”

“Good. I’ll show you guys the house then” I say and lead Kevin and Sam out of the foyer. We walk through the hallway where Erin, James and I put the photos and pictures back on the wall. Luckily I hadn’t damaged any of them too bad when I tore them down.

“Is this Brian?” Kevin inquires pointing at one of the pictures.

“Yep. That was his twenty-first birthday party. I had just surprised him with a…” my face turns red as I realize that I almost told my therapist that I had given Brian a lap dance “a special moment.” God that didn’t sound any better. I turn even redder as I see that Kevin and Sam are trying not to laugh. “Go ahead. Laugh. It’s funny.” They both have a good giggle.

“What were you going to say?” Sam asks.

“Lap dance. I’d just given him a lap dance.”

“So that’s why he’s got a bit of a smolder in his eye” Kevin says with a smile.

“Yeah. Can we move on? This is just getting more and more embarrassing for me.”

“Sure” Sam and Kevin reply with smiles plastered on their faces. I show them the living room, kitchen, dining room and where the bathroom is downstairs. We go upstairs where I point out the bedrooms and then I take them to my painting room. I hesitate at the door like I do whenever I’m about to show off my artwork. I open the door and lead them into the small room.

“Wow” says Sam and I blush.

“Wow is right. Lucas… you’re an amazing artist” Kevin says, his jaw slightly dropped.

“Ummm… thanks I guess. This is the one I finished most recently.” I point to the painting of Brian still on the easel.

“Wow. He looks great. You did a terrific job.” I grow even redder. “No really. He looks so…” Kevin flounders for words.

“In love. He looks so in love” Sam supplies.

“Exactly. Is this how he looked at you?” I nod. “Dear God. You guys were absolutely head-over-heels in love” Kevin says as I nod again.

“Brian was my world.”

“And it looks like you were his” Sam says with a smile.

“Yeah. It was great. Which is why it hurts so much now that he’s gone.” I give a small, pathetic smile. “We should go downstairs. Dinner is probably close to being done” I say stopping whatever Kevin was about to say. They head out and I shut the door behind us. They start heading down the hall but I stop at my bedroom. “I’ll be down in a minute. You guys go ahead.” Kevin and Sam exchange a look and then Sam continues down the stairs.

“Are you ok?” Kevin asks with piercing stare that reminds me of Brian.

“Well enough. I’ll only be a moment. Please, go on downstairs.” I accidentally let the need to be alone seep into my voice. Kevin looks at me for a long moment before he finally goes down the steps. I slip into my room and sit on the bed. I finally cry, letting the tears fall down my face as I think about Brian. Dear God, I miss him so much but I refuse to wallow in my sadness. Brian wouldn’t want that dammit so I refuse to do so. I clamp down on my tears and once they finish falling, I go wash my face. I go downstairs to find Kevin and Sam setting the table. “I’ve got that. You guys go ahead and sit down” I say when I walk into the dining room.

“We’ll finish this” Kevin states.

“We want to help” Sam says without looking up.

“Fine. What would guys like to drink?”

“Milk” they respond in unison. They give each other funny looks and I giggle as I go back to the kitchen.

“What would you like to drink James?”

“Just water” he says without looking up from plating what looks like chicken marsala, garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus. I grab four glasses and pour three milks and a water.

“You just had to be different” I say to James in a teasing tone.

“Of course. You know me. Gotta be difficult.” James grabs two of the plates while I grab two glasses. We set them in front of Kevin and Sam before going back for our own. We sit down together and have a good time talking over the delicious food James made. After dinner, we head to the living room where we continue to enjoy each other’s company. I feel almost normal and happy again. Eventually the night comes to an end and James and I wave at Kevin and Sam as they pull out of the driveway. I am still smiling as James and I go back inside to clean up from dinner.
