Epilogue

Epilogue

“I want to thank you guys for coming out tonight to support us,” Jason announced, raising his glass. As Delaney raised her glass, the sparkling one-carat round diamond on her ring finger glistened in the dim light of the Party Room at Thai Palace.

“To…my darling Delaney,” Jason began, “who I hope will stick around with me through the good and the bad. But…” he paused, looking deeply into her cerulean blue eyes, “…I think as long as she’s with me, we won’t have to worry about the bad.”

A chorus of mock “awwwws” rang out from the group, which included Lani, Jacy, Ryan, and Joe – all who knew that Jason was being a clear sap about his fiancée but still wanted to razz him about it anyway. Stephanie, unfortunately, had already made prior arrangements with her mother to host a yearly caviar gala at her mother’s mansion in Hollywood. She had not been a happy camper about that and was calling the group nearly every five minutes to get a live update.

“To Delaney and Jason!” the entire group announced. Glasses clinked and the gang took a celebratory sip.

May seemed to have snuck on by faster than anyone could have realized. Jason had just proposed to Delaney the night before, and the group had scheduled an impromptu dinner for this evening. Summer vacation was on the horizon, and Ryan was finally going to do what he had been waiting a whole semester to do.

“Can’t believe they’re fucking getting married,” Ryan whispered over to Lani with a smile.

Lani smiled back and took another sip of her drink. “Actually, I’ve always thought that Delaney would be the first one to get married.”

“Really?”

“Yeah,” Lani answered. “Somehow, the idea of Delaney and marriage always clicked to me.”

Ryan paused. “I’ve actually always thought the same thing about Jason.”

“Oh really? Why? Cause he’s so mature?”

“No, cause he’s loaded. I mean, look at the size of that rock! What 21-year-old can afford that?”

Lani laughed quietly and continued to observe the happy couple. Ryan couldn’t help but notice how longingly she observed them.

“Lani?” he whispered, as Joe and Jacy continued teasing the newly engaged couple.

“Hmm?” she answered, taking a small bite of her chicken satay.

“Are you free tomorrow night?”

Lani’s fork stopped mid-air and she regarded Ryan curiously. She didn’t answer right away, and Ryan took that as shy hesitation. But he was wrong.

“I’m leaving for Hawaii tomorrow.”

Ryan’s stomach sank. “What?”

“I spend summers with my dad. My plane leaves tomorrow.”

“Oh,” Ryan answered, trying his best to hide his disappointment.

Lani placed her fork on the table. The others were still seemingly engrossed in their own conversation. She regarded Ryan with all seriousness. “Ryan, I…uh, I…have a boyfriend.”

Ryan felt like the biggest ass in the world at that moment. He tried to think up something on the spot. “No, that’s not what I meant…I just…I wanted to plan another small get-together for Jason and Delaney, but…no. If you’re not going to be here, then it’s a stupid idea.” He took a nervous drink from his glass.

Lani regarded Ryan skeptically. “Are you sure?”

Ryan expression was virtually unreadable. “Positive,” he answered, a little too firmly.

It was at that instant that Jacy caught the little exchange between Lani and Ryan. She made a mental note of their whisperings and prolonged glances at one another. She didn’t think there was anything going on between them – Lani had a boyfriend, and she wasn’t the type to be unfaithful. And yet…Jacy couldn’t shake the feeling that something was brewing underneath it all.

THE END?
