Chapter 17

Chapter 017: Message :

Jasper and Johan knelt before the stately figure of the King Elmgrim. Elmgrim towered over them as he sat upon his throne. Similiar to Jasper no emotion played upon his face; nor did he ask after his Wizard, Rosenbrim. His well sculpted chin rested easily in the palm of his strong fingers.

Jasper solemnly reported all that had befallen them since they had left from HammerFall. The King stood weighing each word that came forth from lips of the Stormblade warrior. Jasper trembled slightly, afraid of what punishment awaited him. He could hear Johan's fright easily in the chattering of the young novice's teeth.

A great sigh came forth from the lips of King Elmgrim, "Dark is the news which you bring me. But I had expected such evil news so fear not. Wizard Rosenbrim made his own choices; whether they are for good or ill we have yet to see." He paused for a moment, "Now Sir Stormblade, I would have the box that was entrusted to your care by Tokkli."

Jasper pulle forth the red colored box, and held up to King Elmgrim. The majestic figure stepped down from the throne. He gracefully took the red case. He seated himself back on his throne before opening it. A white scroll rested within, sealed by wax with the symbol of Stratsovara's royalty.

King Elmgrim broke the seal and silently read the message within. Once more no emotions betrayed him as he read silently the words of his once ally. Jasper continued to kneel still nervous inside. His stomach felt like a tight ball of pain. He knew that Johan was okay. He didn't hear the fear coming from the novice so he felt sure that Johan had taken the King's word and been able to relieve himself. But Jasper could not. He was always worried about his image, and how he would be preceived. He knew that people would call him a traitor for losing Wizard Rosenbrim, and that would sting him far more then anything else. His mind still thought with longing for the dark haired wizard. But he supposed that was all useless now. The Wizard had vanished into the Black East. There would be no return of Rosenbrim. Few ever went into the East as slaves to come into the West alive.

King Elmgrim spoke at least after a long silence, "The Kingdom of Stratsovara stands with us against the Horde of Iced Earth. Even now they are expelling all Mercenary bands of the East from their kingdom. We are to aid them in the search of their queen. I shall assign the Tetra Knights to this task. You two have done well. Go to the barracks and rest for today."

Elmgrim stood up and left the hall.

Stephen sat upon the bed. His mind couldn't fathom it. Rosenbrim was gone. He felt like half of himself was missing. He could not show weakness. Not in the court; there were spies there looking for it. Only in his bedchamber did he have complete privacy. He placed his hand on the bed where Rosenbrim had often laid beside him. His hand softly caressed the smooth silken sheets.

His hands plucked up a strand of long black hair. It was all he had now of Rosenbrim. He could not believe that Magnus had fallen into such a simple trap. They had both seen his sister die so he didn't understand how someone as clever and powerful as Magnus fell for such a rouse.

His fists clenched tightly in anger as tears fell from his eyes. His fists slammed down on the bed making it shake for a few seconds. "Damn it all!! Magnus."

He stood up from teh bed and walked to the window. His hands rested upon the cold, stone sill as his sapphire eyes gazed out into the midday sun.

He vowed to himself, "I will have you back Magnus. Even if I have to tear apart the Black East, stone by stone."
