Catching Up

“Are you just going to stand there or what?” Jason asked as he watched Veronica take him in . His voice startled her slightly and she looked into his eyes. Those same brown eyes.
“Wow” was all she managed to get out before rushing toward him for an embrace. The force at which she came at him made him stumble back a bit, but he quickly returned the hug.

“How did you know where I was?” Veronica asked, voice muffled as her head was buried into his chest.
“I have connections.” Jason replied, as he thought about his visit to see both of their mother’s earlier that day.

After a couple of minutes he finally asked against her neck
“Can I come in?” Realizing they were still embracing Veronica quickly stepped away.
“I’m sorry. Come in. Please.” she said motioning toward the open door.
He stepped into the small living room and took in a deep breath, looking around. She also came into the apartment and closed the door. Hearing the door click, Jason turned around to face Veronica, a smile on his face.

“I’m starving! What have you got to eat?” Veronica’s mouth dropped open and she couldn’t help but roll her eyes.
“Some things just never change, do they?” she sighed and headed toward the kitchen.

The two friends had been up for hours, eating sandwiches and going over the last four years they had missed together. Veronica told him about her degree in fashion design and showed him some of the things she had come up with for her internship over the summer. Jason told her about his tour in Asia and showed her pictures of the places he had been and the people in his unit.

“It’s all so weird.” Jason said after coming back from the a bathroom break.
“What?” Veronica said, still looking at the pictures he had given her.
“Four years gone by so quickly.” he said, sitting on the floor next to her.
“I know.” she responded. “We’ve changed so much. Our lives have changed. But we are still the same.”
“Some things don’t change.” Jason said, looking down at his hands.
“Some things do.” Veronica said, putting her hand on his cheek. He lifted his head to look into her eyes.

“Like what?” he asked.
“Like...” she hesitated. “Me and you. And what we could be...together.”
“Yeah. Me, you, and Alex. One big happy...” Jason stopped short, seeing Veronica tense. What’s wrong? Trouble in La-La Land?”
“You could say that.” Veronica said. “I should have known he was no good I should have listened to you from the start. Alex is an asshole.” Veronica spat the last part out.
At hearing this, Jason’s eyes went wide and he feigned shock.

“Doth my ears deceive me? King Alex? A derriere entrance? Spoken by Queen Veronica herself? Oh, I think I shall faint!”
“Shut-up!” Veronica giggled and pushed Jason as he fell on her shoulder.
“So what happened? How did you come to this realization?”

Veronica began to explain the whole situation with Sandra and the fight earlier. By the time she was finished Jason was clenching and unclenching his fist.

“Plus any other little instances before that.” Veronica added.
“I hate to say it. But I told you so.” Jason managed through gritted teeth.
“I know. And it’s over for good. She said, standing and going over to the window. “I’ve said it before, but I do mean it this time.”
“So that’s why I saw all those broken pictures on the sidewalk?” he asked.
Veronica chuckled and thought about the phase she went through, chucking Alex’s pictures out the window. “Yeah.”

“Funny. I thought you two had accidentally bumped into it during some intense love making.”
Veronica shook her head. “No. The pictures fell here.” she said, pointing out the window. “The bedroom is over there.” she motioned her head toward an open door. She turned around to face Jason. “Would you like to see it?”
“Is that an invitation to see the bedroom or something more?” Jason asked, rising to his feet.
Veronica smiled sweetly and shrugged her shoulders. “I dunno. Let’s find out.” With that she turned her back to him and headed toward the room.

‘Why does she still play games with me?’ Jason thought as he felt himself become aroused by her boldness, and what might actually happen. As he followed behind her he caught sight of a picture of Alex on the window ledge. With a flick of his wrist the picture went sailing out the slightly open window and crashed on the ground below.
“Oops.”
