Anytime and Always

“You’re right,” Sin ran her hands through her dark hair in frustration. “I am a fucking reject.”

“I don’t remember calling you a ‘fucking reject’,” Joseph smirked at his friend as he sat next to her on the couch. “All I said is that you’re playing right into Zip’s hands. He wants you to have all these fears and doubts about your relationship with Eddie. He wants you to think that you guys don’t have a future together, so maybe he’ll have a chance with you.”

Leaning back against Joseph’s couch, Sin let out a heavy sigh. She and Eddie were due to go to Ohio in two days, and for the past week, Sin had spent every waking moment worrying about their relationship. The worst part was that Eddie had no idea why she was acting strange. He kept trying to do things to make her happy, and that just ended up making Sin feel guilty.

“But what if he’s right?” Sin asked Joseph with a frown. “I mean, I don’t know what Eddie wants out of the future. Can you see me living in a little house baking fucking cookies for the neighborhood kids?”

Chuckling, Joseph shook his head. “Do you really think that’s what Eddie would want?” he asked. “You’ve known him for, what, six months? He knows what you like and what you hate; he knows the type of person you really are. Do you think he would ever just up and expect you to change completely?”

Chewing on her bottom lip, Sin could feel herself relaxing some. She was glad she had decided to stop by Joseph’s place for advice. “No, he’s never asked me to change anything about myself,” she smiled a little to herself. “Except to stop calling him nicknames like Sport or Kiddo. And even that has stopped bothering him.”

“You really dig this guy, huh?” Joseph asked gently.

Taken by surprise by the frankness of Joseph’s question, Sin looked down at her hands. “I do,” she admitted. “He’s so fucking good for me, Joseph. He makes me feel… valuable. He makes me feel special.”

Reaching over, Joseph put his hand on Sin’s shoulder. “Then don’t let Zip or anyone else fuck with your head over your feelings,” he told her. “Shit, look at me and Lianna. We didn’t have anything in common when we first met, but I couldn’t live without her now.”

“How do you guys do it?” Sin asked, purely curious. “I mean, do you know what she wants out of the future, or what you want? Will you guys be able to mesh all that shit together? Don’t you worry that, one day, you may want different things from life?”

Joseph’s eyes lit up excitedly at Sin’s questions. “Sometimes,” he said cryptically, a smile playing on his lips. “You don’t get to even wonder about those things. Sometimes, life – the future – it just happens. And then you work together and do your best and be happy that you have someone you care about with you to work through all the hard shit and to share all the great stuff with. That’s what me and Lee have decided.”

Wrinkling her forehead, Sin looked confused for a moment by Joseph’s mysterious air. “What the fuck are you-” Suddenly, her eyes got wide. “Wait - last week, when we all went out to eat, Lianna refused to have any wine. Is she… are you guys…?”

Absolutely beaming, Joseph nodded. “No one’s supposed to know yet,” he told Sin, unable to hide how happy he was. “We’re flying out to California to tell our parents at the end of the month. But she is… she’s two months pregnant.”

Throwing her arms around Joseph, Sin surprised her friend with her uncharacteristic display of affection. “That’s so great,” she told him honestly. “God, you two are going to make awesome parents!”

Pulling back, Joseph smiled knowingly at Sin. “How can you say that?” he smirked sarcastically. “I mean, we’re so different… We don’t know what’s going to happen in the future… What if Lianna and I realize we want totally different things?”

Not sure if she should hug Joseph for trying to help her with her fears, or punch him for being such a wiseass, Sin just laughed. “You’re an asshole,” she told him affectionately.

“You are, too,” Joseph replied immediately. “Or you will be, if you fuck up the strongest, healthiest relationship I’ve ever seen you in. Sin, I’m not saying I know what’s going to happen in Ohio; Eddie’s parents might not like you, or the town may give you claustrophobia, or you may get into an argument with another one of his friends. But in the end, does any of that matter as long as you get to be with Eddie?”

Grinning a little despite herself, Sin shook her head. “Nah,” she told Joseph. “Eddie’s all that matters. Thanks.” Rising, she looked at Joseph and smiled warmly. “And really, congratulations. I’m so happy for you and Lianna.”

Rising with Sin, Joseph nodded. “Thanks,” he told her. “But remember, it’s a secret. So no blabbing.”

“I promise,” Sin said. “I guess I’ll see you when I get back from Ohio, then.”

Nodding, Joseph walked Sin to the door. “Hey,” he said as she opened the door and went to leave the condo. “Just talking from my own experience here, but… if you care about someone, differences mean dick in the long run.”

Smiling, Sin didn’t say anything else. She just waved and walked towards the elevator. “Joseph is right,” she told herself as the elevator started moving. “I can’t let my fears ruin the best thing I’ve ever had.” Then she shook her head in amazement.

“Damn, he’s going to be a good dad.”

-----

As Sin and Eddie stood in line to deplane, she pulled her jacket tightly around her. “So how far are we from where your parents live?” she looked over her shoulder and asked Eddie.

“A little under two hours,” Eddie told Sin, the excitement about seeing his family and visiting his hometown evident. As soon as he took in his girlfriend’s demeanor, though, he frowned and reached his arms around her waist to pull her to his chest. “Don’t worry,” he said for the hundredth time. “I promise, they’re going to like you.”

“You can’t promise that,” Sin couldn’t help but feel her body relax a little as she leaned into Eddie. “You said they weren’t very happy when you moved to New York. Now your bringing home this strange tattooed girl who-”

“Who makes their son happier than he’s ever been in his life,” Eddie cut Sin off to finish her sentence, kissing her on the temple. “Please, Sin, just relax. Everything’s going to be fine.”

Letting out a soft sigh, Sin tried to do as Eddie asked. After all, she didn’t want to ruin his trip. But despite Joseph’s encouraging words a few days earlier, she was still apprehensive about the visit. “Okay,” she relented. “I’ll do my best.”

“Thank you,” Eddie smiled to himself.

Walking through the terminal, Sin tried to take everything in. Columbus was a fair sized city, though, so she wasn’t sure that the people walking around her were going to be anything like the people in Eddie’s hometown. “EDDIE!” she heard a young female voice call out as they approached the meeting are, pulling her out of her nervous daze.

Looking over to where the voice was coming from, Sin smiled despite herself. Jumping up and down excitedly was a young girl that was unquestionably Eddie’s younger sister, Sarah. Even with her petite physique and a scattering of freckles across her face, the resemblance was undeniable.

“Sarah!” Eddie grinned, rushing to meet up with his little sister. Dropping his carry-on bag, he threw his arms around the girl. “I missed you, Booger.”

“Don’t call me that!” Sarah tried to seem annoyed as her older brother released her from his embrace, but she was too thrilled to see him to seem truly bothered. “And this has to be your girlfriend! Hi, I’m Sarah.”

Putting out her hand to the eager girl, Sin had to smile at her exuberance. “Hi, Sara. It’s great to meet you. I’m Sin.”

“Please say Mom and Dad didn’t send you to pick us up,” Eddie teased Sarah as they all walked over to towards the baggage claim area, throwing his free arm over her shoulder. “I must have really pissed them off, if they’re willing to put my life AND the life of my girlfriend in such danger when we first arrive…”

Standing slightly back as they walked, Sin just watched the bantering between brother and sister. She was envious, she had to admit – not jealous, just envious. Besides Eddie, Sin had never been that close to anyone. Even Joseph and Tavian, as deep as their friendships ran, didn’t have that automatic camaraderie that Sin saw between Eddie and Sarah.

“But at least I have Eddie,” Sin thought as she looked at the back of his head as he laughed at something his sister said. “At least, until I meet his parents and they forbid him from ever seeing me again…”

-----

Sitting at the dinner table later that night, Sin to smile to herself in amazement. Eddie’s whole family was as great as he had told her they were. When they had arrived at the house, Sin had been taken aback by the openness of Eddie’s parents. They both had embraced her as if they had always known her.

While Sin still hadn’t gotten up the nerve to take off her jacket – despite the heat wave that Ohio was presently going through – nothing else about her seemed to bother them, even when she had accidentally dropped the flour while helping Eddie’s mother make dinner and said ‘shit’. Eddie’s mother had just laughed. “I say ‘sugar’ when that happens,” she told a blushing Sin. “But to each his own.”

“Okay,” Sarah’s eyes were glowing as she turned her stare on Sin. “I have, like, totally beaten my own record for not saying something I wanted to say, but I have to ask…” Glancing over at her brother nervously, Sarah looked back at Sin. “Is it really true you used to date Zip Kopti?”

Taking a deep breath, Sin stared down at her plate. Eddie had warned her that there was no way Sarah would make it through the visit without saying something about Zip, but Sin had hoped she would have more time to adjust before she had to deal with this particular issue in front of Eddie’s family.

“I’ve known Zip for a long time,” Sin told the fried chicken that was sitting on her plate, rather than looking up at Sarah. “I guess you could say we dated for a while.” Looking up towards Eddie, Sin felt a shiver run down her spine when she saw the supportive look he gave her. “But in truth, my relationship with Zip wasn’t very strong – not like the one I have with your brother.”

Reaching over, Eddie took Sin’s hand and squeezed it. He knew how hard it must be for her to say such personal things in front of near-strangers like his family. But he couldn’t deny how much Sin’s words meant to him. “And I think that’s enough for now,” Eddie turned his glance from Sin to Sarah. “If we’re going to be talking about relationships, I’m more interested in this gigantic bodybuilder that Dad says you’ve been seeing…”

Once again, Sin leaned back and watched as Eddie’s family started teasing and joking between themselves, but she could still feel Eddie’s hand holding hers. Tears were stinging at her eyes, but she wasn’t near ready to show that kind of emotion in front of Eddie’s family. Instead, she just sat back and enjoyed watching a closeness that she had never experienced herself, with a family that barely knew her but who was completely willing to accept her – just because Eddie asked them to.

-----

“I’m sorry,” Eddie blushed sweetly as he handed Sin a pillow. “I really did think that, at twenty-four, my mother would accept me sleeping in the same bed as my girlfriend. I didn’t realize she would make you sleep separate from me.”

Throwing the pillow on the bed, Sin took a few quick steps toward Eddie, putting her arms around his neck and kissing his lips softly. “It’s fine,” she promised. “God, today has gone ten times better than I ever thought it would. You’re family is awesome. I think I can spend the next four nights not having sex with you.” Raising her eyebrows, she smirked. “Although, it will be quite torturous.”

“Well, you know,” Eddie grinned back at Sin as he slid his arms around her waist and pulled her close to him. “This was my old room, and I never did do anything naughty in here with a girl… Maybe, later tonight, I could sneak in here and fulfill that particular fantasy…”

Letting out a short giggle, Sin looked up into Eddie’s warm brown eyes. “You know, you are the only guy in the world who could use the word ‘naughty’ seriously and not make me puke.” Sliding one hand into the hair at the nape of Eddie’s neck, Sin tilted her head and smiled at him. “But no. Your parents don’t seem to hate me yet. I don’t see any reason to give them an excuse, by defiling their little boy.”

“Oh, you’ve defiled me more than once already,” Eddie grinned happily down at Sin. “But I really would like to have some time with you tonight… to thank you properly for being such a good sport about coming here with me and everything…”

Letting out a little yelp, Sin jumped as Eddie grabbed at her ass. “Stop it,” she chided him. “I’m serious. I really like your parents, and I don’t want to do anything to make them not like me. So, for the next few days…” she reached down to her waist and took Eddie’s hand in hers. “THIS is off limits.” With that, Sin led Eddie’s hand seductively between her thighs.

Slitting his eyes, Eddie gave Sin a teasingly irritated glance. “Oh, you are a cruel, cruel woman,” he said, the corners of his mouth turning up and betraying him. “Cruel.”

Letting go of Eddie’s hand, Sin smirked as she then started rubbing his chest. “Yes, I am,” she said simply. “Of course, this does mean that when we get back to New York, I will owe you…”

Grabbing Sin’s hand from his chest, Eddie tenderly led it to his lips, kissing her palm. “Okay,” he conceded. “I’ll accept that you owe me…” Suddenly, he grabbed her other hand and pinned her wrists against the wall above her head. Pressing his body as close to hers as he could, Eddie took her mouth abruptly, kissing Sin with as much passion and energy as he ever had. Finally pulling away, he looked into her eyes, smiling when he saw that familiar look of desire. “But there. At least we’re a little more even now.” Taking a few steps back, he smirked.

“I have been a bad influence on you,” Sin smiled at Eddie, embarrassed since she knew that her cheeks were flushed. “I’ve made you a mean man.”

“Yep,” Eddie grinned. “Goodnight…”

Watching Eddie leave the room, Sin couldn’t stop smiling. As the door closed, she looked around the room she would be staying in and held back a giggle. While Eddie’s parents had basically turned his childhood bedroom into a guest room, there were definite signs of a young Eddie still around – sports posters, framed pictures, a George Lucas autograph...

Sitting down in the bed, Sin grinned to herself when she heard a knock at the door a moment later. “Eddie, go away!” she called out. “I told you that you can’t come in here tonight. You can wait four days, you pervert!”

The door opened, and Sarah poked her head in with a smile. “It’s just me,” she told Sin, who was blushing furiously as soon as she realized she had miscalculated who was at the door. “Do you mind if I come in?”

Shaking her head, Sin wished she could just melt into a puddle in the middle of the floor. “I’m so sorry I just said that in front of you,” she told Sarah with an embarrassed frown. “I feel like an ass.”

Laughing, Sarah shook her head and took a seat beside Sin on the bed. “Don’t worry about it,” she grinned. “Just be glad I wasn’t my mom.”

Glad to see that Sarah was every bit as sweet as Eddie had said she would be, Sin looked at the girl. “Yeah, thank God for that. So, what’s up?”

“Nothing, actually,” Sarah leaned back on the bed and looked up at Sin. “I just wanted to take a minute to talk to you alone – you know, get to know you. My brother won’t let you out of his sight most of the time, and the rest of the time my mom is around. I just thought we could hang for a little while.”

“Sure,” Sin grinned appreciatively at Eddie’s younger sister. “That sounds great.”

So, the next hour was spent talking. Sarah told Sin story after story about Eddie when he was younger; it was clear that the girl adored her brother. In turn, Sin answered Sarah’s questions about traveling and being a photographer and dating a rock star. At first, she was a little uncomfortable, but Sin quickly realized that Sarah was just genuinely fascinated with the stories. “Yeah, try not to date musicians,” Sin rolled her eyes as she finished explaining some of the reasons she and Zip didn’t work out – although she did censor much of it. “They’ll never be as into you as they are into themselves.”

Laughing, Sarah sat up and faced Sin. “You’re a riot,” she told her brother’s girlfriend. “I’m really glad that you and Eddie are together. I always thought he’d end up with some boring, dumb, baby-making-factory like all his high school friends did. I’m so happy he ended up with someone cool and different.”

“Thanks,” Sin felt her face flush slightly at the sweet girl’s words. She couldn’t believe how well she and Sarah were getting along. In fact, Sin grew so comfortable she didn’t even think twice when she started feeling warm and slid off her jacket.

“Damn!” Sarah’s eyes grew wide as she took in Sin’s tattoos.

“Crap,” Sin grumbled to herself. “Listen, I wasn’t even thinking just now… I didn’t really intend for you to see these-”

“Why not?” Sarah looked shocked. “They are so awesome!”

Looking down at her arms, Sin smiled a little shyly. “You think so?” she asked nervously, watching Sarah nod emphatically in response. “Well, I’m glad you don’t hate them, but I don’t think I’m ready to show your parents.”

Rolling her eyes, Sarah rose from the bed. “I recommend you do,” she told Sin seriously. “I think it would be worse if they thought you were hiding stuff from them from the very beginning.”

“They’re going to think I’m a freak,” Sin admitted her fear, something she hated doing. “They are so not going to think Eddie should be with a girl like me.”

Chewing her lip, Sarah tilted her head to the side. “They’ll probably be surprised, and they might not understand why you have them,” she admitted to Sin. “But my parents aren’t like that. They won’t think anything bad about you, or act like you and Eddie shouldn’t be together or anything.”

“Really?” Sin asked hopefully. Eddie had told her almost exactly the same thing, but hearing it from Sarah as well was calming Sin’s nerves a little. “You think they will still be okay with me?”

“I do,” Sarah nodded knowingly. “So you should probably just wear a t-shirt or something tomorrow, not hide them. But for now, I’m going to bed. This has been fun. And I really am glad that you and Eddie are together… although I can’t imagine dissing Zip Kopti for my BROTHER.”

“That’s a good thing,” Sin smirked at Sarah. “For you to think any other way would be completely gross.”

Sticking her tongue out, Sarah bounced over to the door. “Goodnight, Sin.”

“Goodnight,” Sin replied. She then walked over towards her suitcase and pulled out her pajamas. She was leaning over, looking for her toothbrush, when she heard another knock at the door. “Come in, Sarah,” she called.

Opening the door, closing and locking it quietly behind him, Eddie smiled at Sin’s form as he walked up to her. “I know my sister and I look alike,” Eddie’s voice made Sin jump. “But I thought you would be able to tell us apart, anyway.”

Turning to face Eddie, Sin was about to give him a snide remark when he pulled her close to him. “I thought I said this was a no-no,” Sin told Eddie in a low voice, putting her hands on his shoulders and looking into his eyes. “Are you really that much of a horn ball that you can’t wait a few days?” she smirked.

Pressing his lips to Sin’s forehead, Eddie looked down into her eyes again. “I am,” he told her with a grin. “But that’s not why I wanted to come in here. I was just lying in bed, and I realized that I really wanted to see what you think so far of everything.”

Disentangling herself from Eddie, Sin sat down on the bed and motioned for him to sit beside her. “You’re family is great,” she began. “Really amazing… And it’s all so foreign to me – the family meals, the late night chats with your sister, your father and mother being so in love still…”

Wrinkling his eyebrows, Eddie was getting a weird vibe from Sin. “Why do I feel like there’s a ‘but’ coming up?” he asked as he took her hands. “Sin, what’s the matter? What’s really bothering you? I know you were nervous about this trip, but you really have been acting weird this last week or so…”

Looking down, Sin swallowed hard. As much as she had taken all Joseph’s advice to heart, so much of what Zip had said to her about her relationship with Eddie was still streaming through her head. “I guess,” Sin’s voice was soft as she tried to explain herself. “I guess it’s just that I get how you grew up now, and how much you liked it, and I wonder about the future. I mean, I really like your family and all the traditions, but I don’t know if I would ever be able to do the small town life.”

Sliding one finger under Sin’s chin, Eddie tilted her head up until he could see her gray eyes. “I never asked you to do the small town life,” Eddie reminded her. “I’m the one who got out of the small town and moved to New York, remember? Where are you getting these ideas?”

Biting her bottom lip, Sin didn’t want to lie to Eddie. “From Zip,” she admitted, cringing when she saw the look of hurt cross over Eddie’s features at the mention of his name. “He just said some stuff to me about how you and I might want different things in the future… how you might want to move back to a small town and have a totally normal life, and I just don’t know if I would be able to-”

Sin’s words were cut off by Eddie’s lips pressing against hers. Taking her face gently in his hands, he moved his mouth over hers passionately. His tongue traced tenderly over her bottom lip before venturing into her mouth to meet with hers. Feeling Sin responding warmly, Eddie slid his hands down over her neck to her shoulders, urging her to lie back while never breaking the kiss.

Allowing her body to lean back against the bed, Sin felt Eddie’s body blanket over her. His kisses were so tender, so sensitive, so intimate, that all her fears of being caught by Eddie’s parents flew out of her head. When she finally felt Eddie break the kiss, she opened her eyes to look up at him. “What was that for?” she asked with a grin.

Looking over Sin’s face, Eddie shook his head. “I don’t know what I want out of the future for sure,” he told her. “Except for one thing: I want to be with you, Sin. I don’t care if it’s in Ohio, or New York, or Australia, or in the middle of the African jungle. I would guess that the children of tribes-people probably need therapy, too.”

Sin chuckled softly at this, reaching up to touch Eddie’s cheek. “I want to be with you too,” her voice suddenly grew serious again. “I just don’t ever want to make you give up something you want for me…”

Looking at Sin silently for a moment, Eddie shook his head. “You give me so much more than I would ever have to give up,” he whispered to her. “All I really want out of life anymore is to be with you. Everything else is incidental. Sin, I don’t want to scare you by saying this, but I have fallen completely in love with you.”

A look of shock crossed over Sin’s face at Eddie’s words. Suddenly afraid of how she would take this news, Eddie kept on talking. “I didn’t mean to freak you out, but I really wanted you to know. And I don’t want you to say it back to me. I know how hard it is for you to trust people, and I don’t want you saying something just for my benefit. So please, don’t be mad at me, just… just know I love you, and know that, in my mind, you ARE my future.”

Tears filled Sin’s eyes, but she was speechless for a moment. Eddie loved her? “I don’t know what to say…” she admitted softly, giving him a small timid smile.

“Then don’t say anything,” Eddie smiled tenderly back at her before closing his eyes and lowering his mouth to hers again. Melting into the kiss, Sin pushed aside the dozens of thoughts drifting through her brain, deciding only one thing mattered at the moment – being close to the wonderful man who was holding her in his arms.

As quietly as possible, Eddie and Sin undressed one another, gently kissing or touching each newly exposed piece of flesh on the other. As they finally discarded their final few pieces of clothing, Sin pressed her mouth to Eddie’s throat, wrapping her arms around his back. At the same time, Eddie kissed her shoulder lightly as he positioned himself between Sin’s thighs.

Pushing into Sin finally, Eddie buried his face into her shoulder to try to muffle the soft moan he couldn’t help but release. He still couldn’t believe he had just told Sin that he loved her – although he didn’t regret it for a second. It was the truth; he was completely in love with her. And right then, as his body moved within her, connected to her, he couldn’t believe that there was a time in his life when he hadn’t known and loved her.

Closing her eyes, Sin felt Eddie kiss her lips softly as she raised her hips to meet his thrusts. They were trying to move slowly, to not make much noise, but it was difficult. Running her hands up and down Eddie’s back, all Sin could think about was how cared for she felt, how right Eddie’s body fit with hers, how much she never wanted to let go of him…

“Oh, God,” Sin whispered several minutes later, biting her bottom lip hard as waves of pleasure began moving through her body. Her muscles tightened around Eddie, who buried his head in the pillow as he continued moving within Sin. He could hear tiny cries escaping her mouth as she came, and a moment later he felt himself empty into her, her name being moaned softly by his lips.

Neither person wanted to move at first. Instead, Eddie just lay carefully above Sin, kissing the curve of her ear and comparing her heartbeat to his own. Sin just clung to Eddie, her eyes still closed. Finally, she spoke. “Thank you,” she whispered.

Lifting his head, Eddie smirked. “You had as much to do with that as I did-” he teased, but Sin cut him off.

“Thank you for telling me you love me,” Sin’s steel-colored eyes were glassed over as she looked up at Eddie. “And thank you for treating me so well. And thank you for wanting to be with me…”

“That last one was a little silly,” Eddie smiled down at Sin, sliding a piece of loose hair behind her ear. “You’re the one that made me want to be with you. It’s me who should be thanking you for allowing me to be with you – for allowing me to love you.”

Suddenly, Sin felt a tear fall over her lashes as a pang of guilt hit her. “I’m sorry that I can’t say it back,” she swallowed hard, no longer able to meet Eddie’s gaze. “It’s not that I don’t care about you; I’ve never cared about anyone as much. I just… I don’t know what love is really, and I don’t want to fuck this up by saying something-”

“Sshh,” Eddie quieted Sin gently, kissing her cheek and tasting the saltiness of the tear that had fallen. “I told you, it’s okay. I just wanted you to know how I felt. I WANTED to tell you, okay?”

“Okay,” Sin looked shyly back into Eddie’s eyes again. “But, still… thank you.”

“Anytime,” Eddie blinked slowly, smiling at Sin and having no regrets whatsoever for having fallen in love with this nervous, strange, exciting, wonderful girl. “Anytime and always.”
