..........................................................................
Orion had fallen asleep on his mate’s stomach, his cheek resting on the soft cloth that was covering a still unconscious Blaze. Rafe gently lifted him up and placed him into the bed that had been placed in the healing rooms. Catsun had enforced a much needed rest on Orion, he was heavily pregnant and all the worrying and fretting he had been doing wasn’t good for either him or the child. Sitting back down next to his son, Rafe stroked the damp black hair and changed the dressing on the wound that was still leaking greenish puss. He prayed to the gods that his son would wake and not leave his child fatherless. A quiet sob drew his attention to Orion’s bed.
“Shush, what’s the matter little one?” He drew Orion up and wiped the tears away.
“I’m scared. I want Blaze back….I want him to wake up, I don’t want our child to grow up with just one parents. I don’t even know what to do or anything! He can’t just go and leave me now!” Rafe stroked the golden hair and cuddled his insecure son in law.
“He will wake. We just have to believe it. We have to keep talking to him as if he is awake. You should calm yourself, getting upset is not good, not for you or your baby.” Orion however could not control himself; heavy sobs wracked his body and he wrapped his arms around his body.
Rafe rubbed gentle circles over his back, however he suddenly stiffened in panic; Orion’s scent had changed he was going to go into labour soon. The first contraction was soon and intense in its coming and had Orion crying out in pain. Rafe settled him into the birthing position and murmured incoherent words of support into his ear. He glanced over at Blaze and prayed that he would wake soon.

Blaze found himself in the middle of a field. He sat down crossing his legs and tugging at a bit of grass that was blowing in the slight breeze. His little black ears where twitching in the mop of messy black hair. Where was everyone he wondered, why wasn’t anyone coming to get him? A twig snapped in the background and he spun round anxiously and spotted a shadow that quickly turned tail and raced away from him.
“WAIT!” He called dashing off himself, forgetting that he’d been told to stay put. His little legs propelled him forwards; his bare feet barely making a sound on the dewy grass. “Wait for me!” He caught sight of the tip of a black ear, propelling himself forward further he knocked down the fleeing figure. It struggled beneath him and he sneezed as the tip of the ear tickled his nose.
“Let me go!” The other figure struggled beneath him, a sweet lilting voice drawing his attention as he stood up pulling the other person up with him. Blaze stood face to face with another wolf shifter that was nervously chewing his lip and whose cornflower blue eyes were flitting around nervously.
“Who are you?” The little wolf shrugged.
”I don’t know. I’m looking for my father.” Blaze cocked his head and stared into those blue eyes but couldn’t remember where he knew them from.
“My papa left me on the clearing. I’m Blaze. Do you want to play with me?”
Shrugging the other shifter tugged at the arm that Blaze was holding. He released it and the other boy jumped nervously from one leg to the other. A loud roar was heard and he jumped about a meter and then grabbed onto Blaze’s arm.
“They’re coming!”
“Who is coming?” Blaze didn’t understand; not until he saw a large horse coming charging towards them. He was in his nightmare, in the nightmare where he was big and got stabbed and died. Blaze grabbed the other boy’s arm and pulled him along behind him.
The forest became thicker and thicker, the nightmare was back. Blaze found himself loosing his grip on the other boy and starting to struggle through thick black oily liquid. Hearing him cry out he tried to push himself towards the sound, cornflower blue eyes swimming in front of him a name so close that he could grasp it.
It was so dark, so tight so hard to keep going. An echo reverberated around his head, an echo of something that he should know, somewhere he needed to be. His movement slowed to near inexistence. Blackness surrounded him and he fainted.
Blaze awoke lying on his back, the grass around him swayed gently back and forth. A small face was peering down at him; big cornflower blue eyes were staring at him curiously.
“Have you seen my father? He needs to come now.” Blaze stared at him. He blinked and stretched.
“No. I’m waiting for someone to come get me. Do you want to play?”
“I don’t have time to play. I want my father now! He needs to come now!” The other boy pulled him up.
“No. I don’t want to move, the nightmares will come again.” He had to move though, he was forced to move, dragged along by the other boy, he was once again forced into the dreaded forest. Once again, like so many times before it became thicker and blacker and the other boy released his hand.
Once again he was struggling through thick blackness, his voice would not let him call but this time the words wouldn’t leave his head. ‘He needs to come now.’ Who was that little boy…cornflower blue eyes…blue eyes. He struggled harder this time and sudden cry had his head snapping in a certain direction. Just a quiet cry but he pushed himself through the dark slime that was dragging him down.
This time the cry was louder, more discernable as he struggled with his own consciousness, willing himself to stay awake as the incoherent cry suddenly turned into something quite coherent.
”Blaze!” A pin prick of light, he could see a pin prick of light which he pushed himself towards. He wasn’t a child; he was grown he had a mate and his mate was expecting a child.
“Blaze!” He picked up strength the pin prick growing into a pea sized spot of light and with every cry it grew more and more.
“BLAZE YOU WROTTEN BASTARD YOU’D BETTER WAKE UP RIGHT NOW!”
…………………………………………………………………………………………
Blaze’s eyes snapped open just as Orion gave the final heave and the baby was out.
“Orion…” He watched his mate’s head turn to him in disbelieve and his face broke into a brilliant yet tired smile.
”You’re awake!” Then he frowned. “I had to give birth all by myself! It really hurt you know, I am not doing it again and another thing…” A wail shut Orion up and both parents’ heads turned towards their child. Blaze sat up, swinging his legs over the side of the bed. He moved to Orion’s bed, the couple of steps that it took him to get there had him exhausted.
“He’s beautiful my star.” He kissed his mate deeply. “You did so well without me, I’m sorry I was not there.” Catsun handed the cleaned baby to Orion who smiled proudly but tiredly.
“Meet your son.” Blaze stared, coal black hair graced his sons head and a pair of tiny black ears were poking out of the hair. The most amazing thing however happened when the child opened his eyes. They were cornflower blue and as he laid them on Blaze, the child face broke into a smile, little hands reaching out towards him.
“Hello beautiful, I’m here; you came to get me didn’t you?” He smiled and wrapped his son and mate into a protective embrace. “What are we going to call him?”
“I’m not sure Blaze, I was so worried about you; that I didn’t try to think of a name for him.” Blaze bend down and licked his son’s face.
“Rhun, his name is Rhun.”
“That is just perfect.” Orion yawned and settled back, his eyes sliding shut. Blaze covered him and his son and turned towards his papa.
“You’re here too! Oh papa!” Falling into his arms, for once in his life he didn’t mind the tongue hygiene that followed. For the moment life was peaceful and perfect.
