“Married? Uh, did I miss something?”
Jason looked completely puzzled, to say the least. Fortunately, he was taking the news a lot better than Delaney, whose face was beginning to match that red hair of hers.
“Hmm,” Jacy began, addressing Delaney. “I think she just stole your thunder, D.”
Joe and Stephanie had just returned from Vegas that morning after an extended honeymoon, and the pair had called an impromptu dinner to celebrate. Stephanie wore a cheap ring from one of Sin City’s all-night wedding chapels, but the huge kitten-ate-the-cream grin on her face indicated that she didn’t really give a shit.
The entire gang was at LAX, ready to welcome back Lani. Stephanie was clearly stealing the limelight from she-who-was-already-engaged and from she-who-would-be-coming-back-home. Jacy thought it was the funniest thing and tried to make as much fun of Delaney as possible just because she was Jacy.
While Jacy was joking around and while Jason looked confused and tried to calm Delaney, Ryan was pacing nervously past the row of seats where the others were seated. He was happy for Joe and Stephanie, but he knew he wasn’t acting as shocked as he could have. He had other things on his mind at the moment.
****
Ryan had just experienced one of the most irritatingly slow summers of his life. He should have been busy consumed with thoughts about playing football and winning the BCS championship game come next January.
But other thoughts preoccupied his mind. After Jason and Delaney got engaged, Ryan realized that a relationship might not be such a bad idea. And now that Joe and Stephanie were a definite item, the draw of forming a lasting relationship with his ideal mate was almost too tempting to put from his mind. Because he knew exactly who that perfect person was.
His mind had been consumed with thoughts of all 5’10” of her. Ryan had often (embarrassingly) dreamt of being with Lani, while she was in Hawaii. He dreamt of what it would be like to run his hands through her silky, black hair – to stare into those emotive violet eyes of hers while he kissed her or even…made love to her.
It was pathetic, and Ryan knew it, but he didn’t give a flying fuck. As with most guys as good-looking as he was, he wanted what was always out of his reach. Ryan could have almost any girl he wanted, but he knew that the girl he really wanted was the one who had gotten away…well, for the summer, at least.
Now was his chance to pursue a relationship with the most beautiful girl he had ever met in his life. Ryan wanted to get to know Lani in every way possible, but he knew that she was a driven girl who was always attracted to success and finishing what she started. He would have to initiate things and convince her that all would be right if they were together before Lani would give a relationship a chance.
Passengers began filing out from the 10:15pm Honolulu flight. Lani must have been in the tail-end of the plane. She was one of the last people to exit, and –
Fuck.
She wasn’t alone.
She was walking next to a guy bigger than Joe and better-looking than Jason. He had to be at least five years older than she was. He was dressed from head-to-toe in full navy officer’s gear, and he had a ‘don’t fuck with me’ look plastered all over his hard, unforgiving face.
Ryan sighed in frustration. This beefcake must be Lani’s boyfriend. Fan-tastic. Just fucking fantastic.

A/N: Guess which two characters will be featured in my next story. You’ll probably be correct. Check back soon!
