The King of Conceit
Putting out his cigarette in an ashtray, Zip leaned back into his couch and picked up the remote control. Flipping idly through the channels, he couldn’t concentrate on any show, and he turned off the television in frustration. Throwing the remote down, he stood up and began pacing around the room.
Since he had returned home from the hospital, Zip had been trying to keep himself occupied so that he wouldn’t start thinking about Sarah again. But no matter how hard he tried, the image of her gold-flecked eyes filled with hurt just before she took off down the street kept coming into his mind.
And every time that image invaded him, Zip felt his stomach clench in discomfort. He couldn’t sort out his thoughts, either, which was frustrating him even further. He knew he had done the right thing earlier that day; it was best to end things now, before Sarah got even more attached, he kept telling himself. He felt badly that he had let things go as far as they had, but holding on any longer would just hurt her worse when things finally ended, as they were sure to.
Zip knew things were going to end because of what Sarah had told him. Even if it was only in a moment of emotional disillusionment, she must have meant it at least somewhat when she told him that they never should have gotten together. Even though she had apologized later, the moment she had said that had hit him hard. If they stayed together longer, if their feelings grew, then if – when – things didn’t work out, it would be too painful for him.
“For her,” Zip corrected himself immediately, and then cursed under his breath. “Okay, fine, maybe I’m protecting myself, too,” he admitted as he walked out onto the balcony of his condo. The sun was beginning to set, and the oppressive city summer heat was being cut through by a gentle breeze as he leaned against the railing. “After all, Sarah is just a kid. Hell, I’m the only guy she’s ever slept with. I’m sure, at some point, she’s going to wonder what else – who else – is out there.”
It was incredibly difficult for Zip to admit to himself that he was worried about protecting his own feelings. With the exception of Sin, he had never had to worry about that; he had never gotten even slightly attached to the girls he dated – if you could even call any of his random hook-ups over the years ‘dating’.
And the thing was, Zip may have had some feelings for Sin before she was with Eddie, but they weren’t ‘together’ at that point. It felt completely different to be with someone – to really care about someone – when they looked back into your eyes and you could see that they felt the same way.
Their few mornings together, Zip and Sarah would wake up and just look at each other for a few seconds before speaking. Those few seconds were more intense for Zip than any other part of any other relationship he had ever been in, as their eyes met and they seemed to be able to communicate without words.
“I’ll miss that,” Zip whispered to himself, looking towards the sinking sun. As much as he never thought it possible, he had actually reached a point with Sarah where she was the only woman he thought of. She was the only one whose face appeared in his mind when he closed his eyes; she was the only person he desired.
‘And if I feel like this after just over a month,’ Zip thought to himself. ‘I just can’t take the chance of being with Sarah any longer… because, if it hurts this much now, there’s no way I would be able to handle it hurting more than this.’
“So I’m a wimp,” Zip said aloud, with sudden realization. “I’m doing this to protect myself. I mean… Sarah, too… but also – mainly – me. Shit, what the fuck did that girl do to me?”
At that moment, the doorbell rang. Zip looked up and into the condo from his place on the balcony. There was no way it was Joseph; he wasn’t going to be leaving Lianna’s side anytime soon. It could be one of his other band mates, although he doubted that. ‘I’d prefer it was Sin, here to feed me my own testicles, rather than Sarah…’ he thought pathetically to himself. Physical pain seemed like a much more preferable option to more emotional turmoil in the moment.
When the doorbell chimed again, Zip let out a sigh and headed inside. If it was Sin, he would deal with whatever she dished out to him; he deserved it, for keeping secrets and lying to her after she had been such a good friend, forgiving him for being such an ass to her in the past. And if it was Sarah…
“Hey,” Sarah looked up at Zip as he opened the door. Her voice was shaky, to match her hands, and she tried to calm her breathing. Looking at his face, she couldn’t read any expression as he looked at her. He seemed to be struggling, though, as if not wanting her to be able to read him.
“Hi,” Zip replied, feeling his heartbeat increasing. Sarah was looking at him hopefully, fearfully, her freckled face looking as innocent as it had the first time he had seen her, at Joseph’s condo the day of the baby shower. He made no move to invite her in, looking at her expectantly instead. “So, what… what can I, um…?”
“Oh, well, um…” Sarah looked surprised to have to speak, although she had been rehearsing what to say the whole walk over. Suddenly, though, her mind was a blank. “Sin came by my place,” she said suddenly.
Giving Sarah a meek smile, Zip shrugged. “Sorry you had to go through that alone,” he told Sarah honestly. “That wasn’t fair. So did she totally lose it? Should I start avoiding empty parking garages and dark alleyways?”
Letting out a quiet giggle, Sarah felt a little better and forced herself to push forward. “Well,” she said to Zip. “If you invite me in, I’ll tell you everything.”
Biting his lip, Zip looked back over his shoulder and into the condo, as if he’d find an answer there. Seeing none, he turned back to Sarah but couldn’t quite meet her eyes. “I’m not sure if that’s such a good idea,” his voice was low. “I don’t know if there’s really anything-“
Sarah didn’t so much push past Zip as just walk right by him, cutting off his words and making him stare at her in confusion. “I’m not letting you send me away until we at least get a chance to talk about this,” Sarah’s voice was firm, although she didn’t look at Zip while she spoke. Instead, she took a seat on the couch and slid off her light jacket before meeting his gaze again.
“Oh,” Zip looked blindsided, still standing at the open door. “Um, okay. I guess that’s fair.” Closing the front door, he walked across the living room and looked uncomfortably at the spot beside Sarah on the couch. Slowly, he sat down, being sure to leave as much room as physically possible between the two of them without falling off the couch and onto the floor.
“Sin is annoyed with both of us,” Sarah began.
“That’s not surprising,” Zip replied, giving Sarah a rueful grin. “Although she’s probably more pissed at me than you…”
“I don’t think so,” Sarah shook her head. “Because she’s not mad that we were together. She’s just mad that we lied to her and Eddie.”
Looking down at his hands, Zip considered this. “Maybe that’s how you took it,” he began. “But Sin and I have a history-”
“I said the same thing, word for word,” Sarah cut Zip off. “And she told me that that wasn’t what bothered her. I mean, maybe you wanted it to…” her voice faded off, a slight hint of hurt in it as she crinkled her eyebrows and looked questioningly at Zip. “Maybe you’re not quite over Sin,” she finished softly.
“That’s not it,” Zip said, the force and strength in his voice surprising both Sarah and himself. “I mean… Sin’s one of the coolest people I’ve ever known, and I’m not able to deny that I cared about her a lot in the past. But I don’t think I ever cared about her as much as-” He faltered suddenly.
“Say it.”
“What?” Zip asked nervously. “I just meant, it’s not like I’m not over Sin…”
“You don’t think you ever cared about her as much as what?” Sarah threw Zip’s words back at him. “As much as your music? As much as your freedom? Or… as much as me?”
Smiling a little to himself, Zip looked up to meet Sarah’s eyes. “Geez,” he smirked at her. “Someone’s gotten a little full of themselves, wouldn’t you say?”
“That’s what spending the last month with the King of Conceit will do to you,” Sarah joked back gently.
Nodding, Zip paused for a moment, trying to gather his strength. Being with Sarah like this, teasing and joking, made it easy for him to fall into the comfortableness that originally attracted him to her. It was too easy to forget what he had been thinking about all day… “Sarah, I think you’re great,” he forced himself to say. “But I…” he couldn’t figure out how to finish what he wanted to say.
“You’re scared.”
“Excuse me?” Zip was more shocked that Sarah was saying the words that he had been thinking just before she arrived than he was taken aback by their meaning. However, he wasn’t about to let her know she was right. “Listen, Sarah, as I said, you’re great. But I’m not scared. I just don’t want to let you get more attached, when deep down, I know this isn’t going to last.”
Taking a deep breath, Sarah ran her conversation with Sin earlier that day through her head. Letting the breath out, she looked at Zip and tried to push away her fears. Before her sat a rich, famous, beautiful man who was known for his womanizing ways. She had only known him for a month, and only been intimate with him for a week. It would take a lot of gall to say what she wanted to say…
“You’re scared,” Sarah closed her eyes and willed herself to somehow take some strength from Sin, the strongest woman she knew. Opening her eyes, she met Zip’s midnight gaze with her own. “You’re scared, because you’re falling in love with me.”
Taken aback by Sarah’s words, Zip rose. “No,” he said immediately, but noticed that Sarah didn’t recoil at his words. That bothered him a lot, although he wasn’t sure just why. “Sarah, I don’t mean to hurt your feelings, but I’m not falling in love with you. I mean, you’re a great girl, and I don’t want you to think that you’re not the type that guys fall in love with… But I’m not falling in love with you. I’m sorry if that hurts you…”
“It doesn’t hurt me,” Sarah said simply, standing up and facing Zip. “Because you’re lying. Sin saw it, and thanks to her, I see it, too.”
Taking in a sharp breath, Zip wasn’t sure what to say. Had Sin really said anything like that about his feelings? “I think you may have misinterpreted what Sin said to you,” Zip began to insist.
“Well, let’s see,” Sarah brought her finger to her chin sarcastically, as though thinking hard. “Her exact words were, ‘He’s in love… Zip Kopti is really in love.’ You can call her right now and ask her, if you need to. It’s what she said, though.”
Turning away, Zip felt an insane headache coming on. “Okay, maybe that’s what Sin said,” he admitted, not opening his eyes. “But then she’s wrong, too. God, Sarah, I seem like such a dick saying this but… I’m sorry. I don’t love you.”
Standing behind him, feeling the pain of Zip’s words, Sarah tried to pull her emotions together before speaking. “Maybe you’re right,” she whispered, unable to raise her voice any more than that level. “Maybe Sin – and me – were wrong. But… I’m sorry, Zip. I need you to say it to me. Say it to my face. Tell me there’s no chance of you falling in love with me, and tell it to my eyes. If you can do that, I’ll go.” Her voice was caught in a sob
As her voice diminished, Zip had a sudden flood of memories – he remembered holidays when he was four or five, his parents happy and content, and then, as time passed, when they started fighting.
Zip remembered the girl in ninth grade who he really liked, who told him her parents wouldn’t let her date someone Middle Eastern.
Then Zip remembered Sin curled up and crying in his bed years earlier, denying that she was doing so and finally admitting that it hurt to be with him when he couldn’t care about her like she cared about him.
Finally, Zip remembered Sarah, that first night they were together… “Are you okay?” he had asked with concern. “You said you weren’t in pain.”
“I wasn’t,” Sarah had given Zip a smile. “I’m not.”
“But then why…?” Zip had been confused by Sarah’s tears, and all he wanted was to figure out how to make them stop.
Looking over Zip’s expression, Sarah had locked her eyes with his. “Because I’m happy,” she had told him. “And I’ve never been this happy before.”
Swallowing hard, Zip hadn’t known what to say. Instead, had he closed his eyes and kissed Sarah gently again, knowing that he, too, had never been that happy before…
Turning around, Zip forced his eyes to lock with Sarah’s. Putting his hands on her shoulders, he bit his lip hard before speaking. “Sarah, I don’t want to hurt you,” his voice was shaky. “I just… I don’t think I’m falling in love with you. And as great as I think you are, I don’t think that I ever will.”
Feeling her eyes immediately fill with tears, Sarah knew she had asked for this. She wasn’t going to punish Zip further by letting those tears roll over her cheeks. “Okay,” she said softly, not breaking her gaze with his pitch-black eyes. “Okay, you were honest. You did what I asked. So… I can’t be mad. I appreciate your honesty.” With that, Sarah began to pull back from Zip’s hands. Reaching for her jacket, she could no longer meet his eyes. Sin had been wrong; she had been wrong. And that realization was the worst pain she had ever felt.
“Well, I’m sorry I made this harder,” Sarah said as she pulled on her jacket, tears blurring her vision. “I’m gonna… I’m gonna see you, Zip. I will. And no hard feelings, okay?”
Before Zip could even respond, Sarah made a mad dash for the door of his condo. He followed slowly, standing at the door and watching her form in the condo hallway, waiting at the elevator, her shoulders silently heaving. He wanted to go to her, but he didn’t know what he could say. He wasn’t in love with her… was he? Staring at the back of her head, he thought of the last month…
As memories passed through his mind, Zip got caught up in his thoughts. It was only when he heard the elevator door make a ‘bing’ sound, and close behind Sarah, that he let out the deep breath he hadn’t realized he was holding. “I’ll miss you, Sarah…” he whispered softly.
Two minutes later, Sarah was standing out on the busy city street outside Zip’s building, tears finally flowing down her face. As much as she had expected what he had said to be true, she never really wanted to hear him say the words… But Sarah also couldn’t be mad at him. If she had never asked, she would have always wondered. Stepping towards the curb, she put out her hand and waived down a cab, taking one final glance at Zip’s building before closing the door and pulling away.
-----
“You’re too good for him,” Ava sat on Sarah’s bed a few nights later, her friend’s head in her lap. “Really. Who does he think he is? In a few years, he’ll be some washed-up rock star with credit card bills out the ass, three or four paternity suits, and no career, and he’ll wonder what happened to the beautiful, smart, witty girl that he had been foolish enough to push away years ago…”
“Yeah,” Sarah turned her head and smirked up at Ava. “But when will he think about me?”
Letting out a light laugh, Ava pushed some hair back from Sarah’s forehead. For the last three days, Sarah had showed up at work. And while she had gotten her work done, she otherwise acted like a zombie. Ava had gotten too frustrated that day with the situation, and had come home with Sarah to try to figure out just what was going on. Even though she felt like Sin knew, her boss would reveal nothing, so it was up to Ava to get the truth out of Sarah. After an hour of gentle badgering, she had finally gotten the story out of the heartbroken young girl.
“I just…” Sarah rolled over, once again dissolving in tears as she buried her head in the comforter. “I was stupid. I thought he might… I thought maybe I had something to offer him that… but I was wrong.” Sobbing loudly, she dug further into the covers.
“You do have something to offer,” Ava’s voice was soothing. “God, Sarah, you’re a pain in the ass, and awfully self-righteous, but you’re a good person. You could have given him something-”
Suddenly, a bang on Sarah’s apartment door cut off Sarah’s words. The steady, insistent knock let them both know Sin was waiting at the door. “Will you get it?” Sarah asked Ava gently. “Sin’s welcome in…”
“Of course,” Ava leaned down to kiss the younger girl’s forehead before standing up and walking to the door. Opening it, a wide grin spread across Ava’s face. “It’s Sin,” she called back to Sarah. “And Madison. Is it okay if I-”
Before Ava could finish, she let out an ‘oof’ sound as Sin pushed past her. “Oh, don’t be that girl,” Sin said, standing beside Sarah’s bed with one hand on her hip. Her voice, however, was softer than her words. “Come on. It’s Friday night. And as much as it FUCKING PAINS ME to say, Madison’s idea of a girl’s night isn’t the worst.”
“What?” Sarah looked up with confusion, trying to grasp somewhere between Sin’s insolent demeanor and her giving words.
“I brought liquor,” Sin held up a bottle of brown liquid in a glass bottle. “And the junior high school cheerleader here,” she motioned with distaste towards Madison. “Brought, like, porn and popcorn. I didn’t tell her what’s up, but she figured out it was about a guy.”
“Brad Pitt movies and ice cream,” Madison smirked at Sin before holding up two bags for Sarah to see. “But same difference as porn and popcorn, I guess. So who’s the guy?” Madison plopped herself on the bed beside Sarah as the girl tried to sit up.
“Oh, I, um…” Sarah’s words faltered as she looked between Ava and Sin. “You know what? Give me that liquor.” Seeing Sin smirk, she took the bottle from her brother’s girlfriend, twisted off the cap and took a short sip. “Ick!” she exclaimed. Turning towards Madison, she felt the liquid run down her throat make its way to her tummy.
“So?” Madison continued expectantly as she took a beer from the other bag Sin was holding and handed it over to Sarah. Letting the girl pause while she washed the taste of liquor from her mouth and everyone settled around her on the bed, Madison’s green eyes opened wide. “WHO IS THE GUY?”
Looking nervously at Sin, Sarah relaxed at the woman’s kind smile. She had called Sin the day after she had spoken to Zip, and told her everything. Sin had called Zip every name in the book, before offering to keep Sarah company. The first few days, though, Sarah had wanted to be alone. Tonight though, apparently, that desire was to be ignored no matter how many pleas she made.
“Well,” Sarah’s voice was soft. “Um… it was, uh, Zip.”
“ZIP?” Madison jumped up from the bed and looked accusingly at everyone in the room. Seeing a look coming from Sin that told her to tone it down, Madison simply put her hands on her hips and shook her head at Sin. “Be as bitchy as you want,” she threatened. “But if you didn’t want me to react with TOTAL FUCKING SHOCK, Sin, you would have told me before we got here.”
“I thought I was dealing with an adult,” Sin mumbled at Madison. “My mistake.”
Despite herself, Sarah started to giggle. She wasn’t sure if it was the alcohol hitting her, or how good it felt to have good friends nearby, or a combination of the two. But for the first time in days, she didn’t feel completely alone.
As Madison and Sin continued bickering, Sarah leaned back into the pillows, resting her head on Ava’s shoulder. The older woman immediately began running her hands in a sisterly way through Sarah’s hair. “This will keep your mind off things for a while,” Ava mused quietly to Sarah. “Five bucks on Sin.”
“I’ll see that,” Sarah looked up at Ava with a grin. “I think Madison’s stronger than she seems.”
And so the night went on. Sarah realized, several hours later, just how lucky she really was. After speaking to Zip a few days earlier, she had seriously considered leaving New York to go back to Ohio. But after seeing the wonderful women, mostly drunk off their asses in her living room by this point, all there for her, she couldn’t help but feel a warmth in her chest.
‘Fight Club’ – one of Sin’s favorites – was about half done when a knock came at Sarah’s front door. Rising quickly from the mass of bodies on Sarah’s bed, Sin looked at the group. “It’s probably your brother,” she told Sarah. “He said he might come by for a few minutes. But don’t worry. I haven’t told him anything.”
“Thanks, Sin,” Sarah said sincerely, from where her head was propped up on Madison’s knee. “I don’t want you to have to lie to him much longer, but I’m just not ready right now…”
“Shut the fuck up,” Sin gave Sarah a kind smile. “This will only take a minute.”
“Not much of a compliment to Eddie,” Madison called out, and then ducked the empty bag of candy Sin threw at her.
Settling back into the couch, Sarah could feel she was getting sleepy. That was a great feat, considering she had barely been able to sleep for the past three nights. ‘I am so lucky to have people like Madison and Sin and Ava in my life,’ she thought to herself as her eyes fluttered closed.
“Ouch!” A male voice came from the hallway, causing Sarah to open her eyes quickly and sit up. “Damn, Sin,” the voice went on. “I get it. I fucked up. But did you have to hit me that hard?”
Sarah’s apartment was small, and by looking past Madison she could see that Zip was standing at her door, across from Sin, holding his stomach. Sarah made no move for a moment, her curiosity about what would happen next getting the better of her.
“Take it like this,” Sin lowered her voice, but unfortunately the apartment was too small for her words not to carry. “You’re just lucky I didn’t force your reproductive organs into your throat. Jesus, Zip, I’m here for a SLUMBER PARTY. If I’m willing to do this kind of shit, do you realize how badly you fucked up?”
“I do,” Zip said, looking past Sin and capturing Sarah’s gaze as he said the words. “I realized just how bad I fucked up. And I came here to apologize.”
From the look on Zip’s face, Sin already knew that he had met Sarah’s eyes, and she let out a frustrated sigh. “Sarah, Dickhead von Cock is here for you,” she called over her shoulder.
With a little smirk, Sarah rose from the bed and walked towards the door. Breaking her gaze with Zip – as difficult as it was for her – Sarah looked with wide eyes at Sin. “If you don’t think-”
“The only thing I DO think,” Sin cut off Sarah, throwing one last dirty look at Zip before turning her attention back to the girl, “is that you should do what YOU think is right. If you want to talk to him… do it. If not, I’m inside with two other women and more sharp objects than you could shake a stick at.”
“Thanks for being so understanding, Sin,” Zip said, his voice a combination of sincerity and joking. At her dirty glare, though, he swallowed hard and looked at the floor.
Smiling to herself, Sarah pulled Sin into a quick hug. “Thanks,” she whispered.
Not saying anything, Sin touched Sarah’s head sweetly, and then turned into the room again. Pulling the door closed behind her, Sarah stepped into the hallway. “You said you came here to apolo-”
Before she could finish, though, Sarah felt herself swept into Zip’s arms. Her eyes immediately filled with tears as she looked up into his face. “I’m so sorry, Sarah,” Zip said suddenly. “I haven’t slept since you left my condo. You’re all I think about, and what you said… what Sin said… you were both right.”
With that, Zip dropped his mouth to Sarah’s. As his lips met hers, he was shy, timid, unlike he had ever been before. “I’m so sorry,” he murmured as he began to kiss her deeper, waiting for any response from Sarah.
Of course, shock was Sarah’s first response. She could barely think, knowing just that she loved the way Zip’s arms felt around her waist, and the way his hot breath moistened her lips. Closing her eyes fully, she couldn’t speak just yet. Instead, she slid one arm around Zip’s neck and the other hand buried into his hair, tilting his head and pressing it so he would kiss her deeper.
Pushing Sarah against the door, Zip let out a contented sigh – one he had been holding in for days – before he parted his lips and ran his tongue over Sarah’s full lower lip. Hearing her whimper ever so slightly, he delved his tongue into her mouth to intertwine with hers. Despite every negative and positive thought he had ever had about their relationship, there was one thing he was certain of: kissing Sarah was the greatest feeling he had ever known.
Sarah, too, didn’t know what to think. Zip’s body pressed against hers, and she sunk back against him in return. His mouth – his lips, his breath, his teeth, his tongue – they assaulted her with passion and desire. The two people kissed like this for several minutes before finally pulling back for air – although their bodies were still pressed up against one another.
“I’m sorry, Sarah,” Zip said breathlessly, looking into her soft brown eyes. “I didn’t think you and I could work, but after three days without you… Sarah, I don’t think I could live with out you.”
“Really?” Sarah asked nervously, her eyes filled with tears as she looked into Zip’s intense black eyes. “Why?” she ventured to ask, the alcohol she had consumed earlier giving her a form of liquid courage. “Why couldn’t you live without me?”
Biting his lip, Zip had expected this question when he had headed over there tonight. But somehow, it was easier than he had expected to answer. “Because I love you, Sarah.”
A lump immediately forming in her throat, Sarah didn’t care when the tears in her eyes broke free of her lashes and cascaded down her cheeks. “I love you, too, Zip,” she whispered, smiling up at him.
Looking down at Sarah, Zip couldn’t remember feeling as alive as he did at that moment – alive and terrified and thrilled – and the moment seemed perfect.
Almost too perfect.
“Okay,” a voice came from behind Zip, cold and hard. “I have no fucking idea what is going on right now, so would someone please explain it to me?” Eddie’s eyes were filled with hurt as Sarah and Zip turned towards him. “And while you’re at it, Zip, could you please get your hands off my sister’s ass?”
