Betrayal
I was sitting in my second period waiting for Clarissa to come when I finally realized that she wasn’t. I immediately began to worry. Clarissa hardly ever missed school, especially on the second day. Something had to be very wrong. I counted down the minutes until the class ended, very impatiently waiting to call Clarissa.
There had been a major buzz around school this morning, when you live in a small town, news travels fast. Everybody knew about the fight between Lucas and Brice, it really sucked because everybody also knew that it was over me. From the moment I walked through the doors I was met with jealous stares and mocking giggles. It was all very unwanted popularity, to say the least.
Five minutes left. It felt like an eternity. I really hoped Clarissa was okay. I hadn’t talked to her since the fight thing, so I really didn’t know what happened with Lucas, if he was alright. I waited up for her to call, but she never did. I hadn’t seen Lucas this morning either, which was understandable. I felt bad that everything went down the way it did, but if Lucas would have just listened to me, he wouldn’t be sitting at home with a black eye right now.
When the bell finally chimed, I sprung out of my seat and headed straight for the pay phones near the office. Once I reached my destination I took the receiver off the hook and pushed a quarter through the money slot. My expert fingers quickly dialed my best friends number. I listened as it began to ring…… and ring. After like the tenth ring I finally realized that no one was going to answer, and I replaced the receiver back in its slot. Now I was really worried. I wanted to leave right then to go check on her, but I knew that I would be in deep trouble if I cut class on the second day of school. I would just have to wait.

Clarissa laid on her bed staring at the ceiling, listening to the phone ring over and over again. She did not make a move to answer it. She didn’t want to talk to anyone at the moment. She just wanted to be alone with her thoughts. She couldn’t help but feel like she had somehow betrayed her best friend. And the worst part about the whole mess, was that she loved it. Not betraying her friend, but being kissed by Lucas. She brought her finger tips to her lips to touch the spot where his had been. She closed her eyes to try to relive the moment in her mind. She had definitely not expected it, but she was glad that it had happened…..wasn’t she.
Clarissa rolled over and pulled her fluffy blue cover over her head to shield her eyes form the light pouring in through her window, when the phone began to ring again. She put her hand over her ear trying to drown out the sound of the never ending ring. She couldn’t take it anymore. She flung the covers off of her and quickly stumbled out of bed, and headed for the phone in the hall. Once she reached it she jerked the receiver out of the slot and screamed, “WHAT?”
“Clarissa?” When she heard the voice on the other end of the line she wanted to hang the phone up that second, but she didn’t.
“Yea,” she answered trying to mask her cracking voice.
“Hey, its Lucas.”
“I know who it is, what do you want?” She asked.
“I…..um…… wanted to talk to you, I didn’t think you would be home, I was going to leave a message.” He answered her question, fumbling with the words.
Clarissa just sat there silent with the phone cradled against her ear with her shoulder. She listened to him breath and prayed he would say something soon, because she wouldn’t be the first to hash all this out. Sure a million things came to mind when she thought about how to start this conversation, but she refused to be the first to speak. After a minute that seemed like an hour he finally broke the silence.
“Look, Clarissa, I think we should talk about what happened last night…….I mean, I really want to talk to you about it.” He tried to explain to her.
“So talk,” was her reply.
“I…..um….we….um, fuck Clarissa,” he stammered.
“Lucas, you know what……. just forget about it.” Clarissa said just before she went to hang up the phone.
“Clarissa, wait,” she heard Lucas call from the other end of the line. Slowly she lifted the receiver back to her ear. “I don’t want to forget it. Can I come over….I mean to talk?”
“Lucas….. what for…. I mean we both know it was a mistake?” Clarissa asked not really expecting him to reply.
“That’s just it, I don’t think it was a mistake. I….um….. God this is fucking hard.” He struggled to find the words to say what he meant.
“Look, Lucas, it shouldn’t have happened, I understand why it did, but it shouldn’t have.” Clarissa tried to give him an out, but he proceeded.
“You’re right, it probably shouldn’t have happen the way it did, but it wasn’t a mistake. Anything that could feel like that can’t be a mistake.” He paused then, Clarissa could tell he was holding something back. She patiently waited for him to continue. “I know you felt it too….. there is no way you can tell me, that you didn’t feel something when we kissed.”
Clarissa was astonished, she knew that when their lips touched for those few precious seconds, that it was going to be the beginning of something big. For the past fifteen and a half hours, she had been trying to convince herself that it was all in her head, but now that she heard Lucas say exactly what she felt, she knew it was real. She didn’t know what ‘it’ was, but she did know it was something.
“Come over, I’ll leave the door unlocked.” Was all Clarissa said before she hung up the phone and rushed to her room to freshen up.

When the lunch bell rang Brice met me at my locker and together we headed to the student parking lot. Brice had asked me to go to lunch earlier, but that was before Clarissa never showed up for school.
“I need to make a quick stop by Clarissa’s, is that okay?” I asked as Brice opened the door to his truck for me to get in.
“No problem,” he said closing the door.
I explained to him how to get to Clarissa’s and sat back and tried to enjoy my lunch break. When we arrived at Clarissa’s, I was surprised to see Lucas’ black mustang parked in the drive way. I glanced over at Brice, he looked at me and smiled. I would love to say that his warm smile brought me comfort, but that would be a lie.
“Maybe you should wait out here, I promise I won’t be long.” I told Brice before I leaned over to peck his lips. He nodded in agreement and I opened the door and stepped out of the truck.
Slowly I made my way up the concrete walk way to Clarissa’s front door. I rapped on it lightly and waited for someone to answer. I waited, and waited. I knocked again this time a little louder, but I still got no answer. Reaching out, I grabbed the knob, and turned it. Thankfully the door was unlocked, and I let myself in.
“Clarissa,” I called to her, “are you home?” I didn’t get an answer. I knew that Lucas and Clarissa had become close since she joined the band, but I had no idea why he would ever be at her house, plus it was really strange that I could not find either one of them. Surely Clarissa wouldn’t have invited him to her room, I mean, it was Clarissa. I started making my way too her room.
When I reached her door I saw that it was slightly open, but not enough to see in. I could hear some rustling around so I took a step closer and gently pushed the door with the palm of my hand. When I entered the room, I wished that I had never came here in the first place. There on top of the blue fluffy blanket we Clarissa and Lucas. Lucas was laying on top of Clarissa and I could tell they were making out. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. This had to be some kind of dream. This wasn’t real….was it?
I guess I gasped cause all of the sudden both of their faces turned in my direction. Clarissa quickly pushed Lucas off of her and sprung to her feet. I couldn’t stay for an explanation, I had to get the hell out of there. I couldn’t breath. I heard Clarissa call my name when I ran out of the front door, but I didn’t stop running until I was safely back in Brice’s truck.
“DRIVE!” I screamed, and we were on our way. So many things rushed to me at once. Anger, sadness, happiness, shock, but the one that stood out most of all was betrayal.
