Chapter 15

"Mom! Where's my blue shirt!"

Mrs. Spencer heard her son hollering. "I just washed it this morning. It's all ready, Dear." She called up the stairs.

"Thank God!!" Marcus didn't thank his mother. "Bring it up here, will you?"

"Sure, Dear." She realized when he came home from his Saturday morning Karate class, left parts of his uniform all the way up the staircase, and jumped into the shower, that he must have a date this afternoon. "The kid has a closet full of shirts, what's so special about this one." She shrugged and took it up to him.

She found him naked in front of the bathroom mirror fighting with a hairbrush. "Fuck, it just won't lay right."

His mother smiled. This must be a really special date. She wondered where he was taking Yolanda this time. "Here, Dear, let me help." With a little water and a mother's magic, his hair finally began to take shape. She handed him the shirt.

"Mom, you gotta drive me to her house and then to the bowling alley."

"Oh, you won't be riding your bike, Dear?"

"Fuck, I'm not riding her on my handlebar." He checked his teeth in the mirror.

"Doesn't Yolanda have a bike?"

"It's Jenny, Mom." Mrs. Spencer frowned. She didn't remember hearing that name before.

"Is she a new girl in school?"

Marcus sniffed his underarms. He really seemed nervous. "Nah, she goes to a different school. I met her at Joel's." His mother sighed, realizing that Yolanda too had been tossed on the scrap heap. She wondered what kind of bitch got her fuckin tentacles into her son this time. Marcus seemed to read her mind and turned to look at her. "Mom, she's really very sweet. Very special. Please don't screw things up, OK?" She dropped her jaw. "Did you vacuum the back seat of the car?"

"No."

"Fuck." He went out of the bathroom wearing only his blue shirt and ran downstairs to the cleaning cabinet, grabbed the dust buster and opened the door to the garage. Mrs. Spencer meanwhile laid out what she considered a nice outfit to take a girl bowling, whoever she was.

"I need some money," Marcus demanded when he came back up. "I'm gonna buy pizza at the lanes. I hope she likes pizza. Fuck, I never asked her. But, shit, all kids like pizza. Right?"

She thought about the lane fee, the ball rentals, the shoe rentals, the refreshments, and handed him three twenties. He nodded his thanks. "Did you remember your condoms, Dear?"

"Oh, Mom. I'm not going to fuck her."

"Oh?" Mrs. Spencer remembered his movie date with Ingrid. She figured she better be ready then for an incestuous fuck when he got back home.

He looked at himself again in the mirror. "Do I look OK, Mom?"

"I think you might want to put pants on, Dear."

They pulled into the Harkness' driveway and Marcus got out. But he turned back to his mother. "You sure I look all right, Mom?" He walked toward the door with a small present in his hand. Mrs. Spencer had no idea what was in the box.

Elsie came out. "Hi, Marcus. You look very nice today. Is that a new shirt? Jenny is almost ready. You can go inside and wait for her." She passed him and headed for the car.

"Hi, I'm Elsie Harkness. You must be Marcus's mother. I'm so glad to meet you. Marcus is a wonderful young man. He's so caring and polite and considerate. You must be very proud of him. Jenny's so excited about this date. Thank you for offering to drive them there. If you like, I could pick them up when they finish and bring Marcus home. It's only fair. Oh, here they come now."

Mrs. Spencer stared at the front door. The only person she saw with her son was a girl, whose barrettes only came up to her son's shirt pocket. Must be Jenny's little sister, she thought. As the two of them came toward the car hand in hand, the girl was skipping. She had on a pretty turquoise and white top with dark blue pants that came to he shins. In her free hand she held a small plastic unicorn.

"Look what Marcus gave me, Mom." She handed her the figurine. "Please put it in my room. I don't want it to break."

"Oh, that's very pretty, Jenny."

Jenny?, Mrs. Spencer thought. This little tyke is my son's date? God, my son is robbing the cradle. Marcus held the car door for his young friend, then slid in after her and helped her find her seatbelt. They both said goodbye to Mrs. Harkness as his mother backed out of the drive. Once she was on her way, she glanced in the rear view mirror. Her seventh-grade son and his second-grade friend were holding hands, whispering and tittering.
