Chapter 14

The early morning sun shone weakly through the thick forest trees, leaving the two travelers walking through in semi-darkness. Midas and Aivon were moving at a brisk pace, intent on moving through the forest as quickly as possible. Many of the trees here seemed to streach out much higher to the sky then they seemed, blocking the light from reaching the forest floor. Patches of moss and plants could be seen in various places were the sun was scarce.

Midas had advised on Aivon to move through the forest quickly, intent on making it to the other side hopefully by nightfall. Aivon silently agreed, though he wished he could take the time to look around more. The forest seemed alive, in more ways then one. Since he first entered it, Aivon could feel some form of magic all around them. He was certain that the trees themselves were the source of all this, but he couldn't be entirely sure.

Midas stopped suddenly and Aivon understood why. There was something else in here, something that was watching them it seemed. Aivon could faintly feel it's magic, seperate from the rest of the forest around them.

"We aren't alone..."

"Um, Midas, what lives in this forest exactly?" Aivon asked, unsure if he wanted to hear the response.

"I'm not sure. I never encountered anything the last time I was here, so I couldn't honestly tell you," Midas said, looking around. "Let's just keep moving. There is a clearing about halfway in. If anything is following us, we will be better prepared to make our move there."

Aivon and Midas continued to move on, taking care to make sure to be alert of their surroundings. Aivon felt a familiar presence near them, but couldn't quite place just where he had felt such energy before. It was certainly a unique feeling, much like Midas with his 'empty' aura. They traveled without rest for a few more hours till they saw it, a clear open area devoid of trees.

The first thing they saw was an alter, made of marble. The sun shone brightly here, as flowers emiting sweet scents bloomed all around. Aivon looked at the alter and noticed it was well taken care of. Someone obviously made an effort to clean it now and again. Or perhaps, the forest had refused to go near it. Aivon had the suden feeling that this was perhaps the resting place of the one who broke the curse.

Suddenly Midas yelled "Wind Cutter!" Slashing one of his blades to channel the energy toward the trees. The wind energy entered and broke, as if strikeing something or something canceling it out. Suddenly, something burst forth striking at Aivon, who raised his hands in defense just in time.

From up close, he could tell that this too was a half-demon. His feet were clawed in order to increase mobility, and his face was covered in red markings that appeared to have been inked on him. His entire lower body was covered in scale-like skin, much like Aivon's own upper body, though his hands and everything else about him seemed normal. He had fierce grey eyes and wild red hair, Aivon noticed, as he blocked another kick from him.

The half-demon pulled away and began to channel his own energy. Suddenly a ball of wind, which Midas recognized as a 'Wind Bomb' spell, formed in his hand. Midas was ready to counter the attack, when Aivon threw up his hand. "Wait, I have an idea." Aivon walked up, unafraid as the other half-demon looked in surprise. Removing his cloak and gloves, Aivon revealed his own demon blood heritage. The other half-demon looked in realization and inched closer, the wind energy vanishing.

Pressing his palm to the scales, the other half-demon looked in wonder at the person in front of him. "Your real..." He muttered before pulling back. "I don't believe it... there are really others."

"Who are you?" Midas asked, wondering if perhaps Aivon knew who this person was.

"I call myself Hisad. I have lived in this forest for most of my life. I wondered if other half-demons existed like myself, but I have never seen another before today." Hisad looked over Aivon, marveling at the features he saw.

"Were you abandoned here?" Aivon asked, clearly perplexed.

"No..." Hisad said looking downcast. "My family really did love me. But there was an accident in this forest that cost my mother and father their lives. Since that day I have lived here, fending for myself." He turned to Aivon. "But please that isn't important right now. Your another half-demon! Are there any more then you out there in the world?"

"I'm... not sure." Aivon said frowning. "In fact, before today I thought I was the only half-demon that existed. I suppose there are more..."

"Please, tell me about yourself."

Over the next hour, Aivon told Hisad his own life story, from the demon father that refused to acknowledge his existance, to his own human mother that raised him, including the time when he moved away to another place and avenging himself by killing his father. He refused to mention Jessica and John, not wanting to explain their role in the story, while Midas remained silent through the whole thing. Hisad turned from wonder to shock and rage.

"He was not worthy to be your father. I see why you killed him." Hisad said, as if the matter was closed. "It's a shame about your mother though."

Midas tended to the fire, trying not to be interested in the conversation the other two half-demons were sharing. He felt it was more of a private matter between them, and instead focused more on the alter. It was about waist high to Midas, a large cube upon which sat a retangular box. On top of that was what appeared to be a small structure with archways on all four sides, the ceiling coming together like a pyramid. It was in no way, shape, or form a grave for the fallen hero from long ago, though he was certain that this spot was most sacred, especially since the forest seemed to refuse to grow over this one spot. Midas knew no human being had made this or kept the forest seperate from the clearing.

The marble the alter was made of looked somewhat special, though he wasn't sure how. It seemed plain, yet at the same time extrordinary, as only a true artist of the craft could possibly make something that showed both qualities. It was also smooth, as if it had been recently polished, and Midas could see somewhat of his own reflection in it.

On the sides were different designs. The north side showed a friece thunderstorm, and what appeared to be lightning striking the ground. The east side showed flowers in a gentle meadow, that looked as if they were dancing in a calm breeze. The south side showed an ocean, with birds flying over it and fish swiming under. The west side showed a mountainous region, with a rising sun peeking it's way upward into the sky.

Midas was puzzled how it had gotten here. Certainly this sort of thing could not occur naturally. It was impossible. Someone had to have done something, left some clue as to what it was for. But there was nothing, not even when Midas checked the inside. He turned to Hisad, but he must have known the question because before Midas could ask, Hisad said "I don't know anything about it. Ever since I have lived here, it was always there, always like this."

Midas closed his mouth and nodded, wondering more about the alter. Turning his back on it, he tended to the fire once more and announced that lunch was ready.

Hisad offered to escort them thorugh the forest to the edge, knowing of a way to cut the time they were in. Bounding along the treetops in front of them, Aivon and Midas hurried along to catch up to the much quicker Hisad. Having lived his life in this forest, Hisad could effortlessly move through it, and the fact his powerful legs could enable him to easily jump from treebranch to treebranch did not hinder his progress.

Once or twice he did have to stop to make sure that the two were indeed following and had not gotten lost. Aivon's own demonic heritage enabled him to keep up, while Midas used his wind magic to help speed him along. By the time they had reached the forest's edge, the sun was going down, but was still visible for a few more hours of traveling.

Midas and Aivon walked away, glad to be out in the open again, but Hisad turned his back on them and began to make his way back into the forest. Aivon noticed this and went back, grabbing his shoulder. "Hey where are you going?"

"Back into the forest."

"But why? Why not come with us? After all, you know people can accept you, just look at me! People know I'm a half-demon and it doesn't bother them."

Hisad remained silent for a few moments before responding. "Aivon, you truely have a blessed life. I wish too that I can leave this place. But I cannot."

"But you can! All you have to do is-"

"Aivon, my place, at least right now, is here." Hisad placed his own hand on Aivon's shoulder. "I understand, more then you know. We are rarities, you and me. I am not ready to interact with anyone just yet. Perhaps our meeting was fate, perhaps not. But the day will come when I can turn away from this forest and not look back. It may not be now, and I may miss it when the time comes. But I know I cannot spend my life here in isolation.

"Besides, meeting you, I think the time for me to leave will come much sooner then I realized. You've shown me that it is possible for those like ourselves to live amoung the humans." Hisad looked at them with a smile on his face. "Thank you." With that he turned and with another leap, he disappeared amoung the trees.

Aivon stood there, staring at the spot that Hisad had just occupied. "Aivon, I understand. He was what you once were, afraid to show your true self to others around you. But he was also right. He needs time to understand what your impact has done." When Aivon did not respond Midas added, "It's more then that isn't it."

Aivon sighed, but did not turn. "I wonder how many more of us exist... how many of us are afraid to show our true selves. Seeing him was... well an eye-opener." Aivon turned and looked to Midas. His eyes held a friece determination in them. "One day, I'm sure that... we will be able to live our lives without such a fear. And I'll make sure it starts with Dosa."

Aivon walked off into the field while Midas watched him. He smiled to himself. "It's times like that that I forget... your also a demon inside too."
