I ran after him, hoping I could catch him before he got to Brice. When I entered through the door, I saw that Brice had gotten to his feet and was waiting for Lucas to reach him. Over the hum of voices and clanking of pool balls, I heard Lucas yelling at Brice, I couldn’t make out the words, but from the look on Brice’s face, I knew that were not good.
Pushing my self through the maze of pool tables once again, I could see that Brice had his hands up defensively, and had taken a step back. The closer I got the more I heard, Brice was trying to explain the situation, “Look man, I didn’t know that Mel….was Melanie, I would have said something……. You don’t want to do this man…I promise you don’t.”
“FUCK YOU!! Who the fuck are you any way…… you’re not going to come to my town and fuck with me and take my girl,” Lucas screamed taking a step forward and bowing up on Brice.
Clarissa got up out of her seat and stood in between the guys and was saying something to Lucas I could not make out. I hate when you’re in a hurry to get somewhere or do something, it takes for ever. It seemed like I was watching the whole scene play out on tv in slow motion. Slowly but sure making my way to the back of the building, I screamed for Lucas to stop, but he acted as if he didn’t even hear me. I finally pushed my way through the crowd of people when I saw Lucas push Clarissa to the side and take a swing at Brice’s face.
Brice ducked missing the blow by mere inches.
“LUCAS, STOP!!! PLEASE,” I screamed keeping my distance.
“Lucas, you don’t want to do this man, trust me you don’t,” Brice said staring the other boy down.
“FUCK YOU!” Lucas said raring back to take another swing. Again he missed, but Brice didn’t. His fist came in direct contact with the right side of Lucas’ face. Lucas stumbled back a few feet before falling flat on his ass.
“Are you done,” Brice asked standing over Lucas. Lucas didn’t utter a word.
“Get him out of here,” Clarissa said to me, as she leaned down to look at Lucas’ constantly swelling eye.
I did as she said and grabbed Brice’s hand and pulled him through the crowd.
Clarissa took Lucas’ hand and pulled him to his feet. She wrapped his arm around her shoulders and led him to the crappy bathroom in the corner. Once inside she shut and locked the door and propped Lucas against the wall. He slowly slid down the wall cradling his injured eye in his hand. Clarissa quickly ripped a few paper towels from the dispenser on the wall, and wet them under the rusting sink. She rushed to him and kneeled down to place the cool cloth on his swollen eye. When she reached out to push the stray strands of hair from his face he finally spoke. “Just leave me alone Clarissa,” he said his eyes never leaving the ground.
“Here,” she said holding out the napkin for him to take.
He pushed her hand away, not wanting anyone’s help at the moment. Clarissa stared at him after a moment she said, “Fine, if you want to act like a two year old, that’s fine with me.”
“Whatever, Clarissa, why don’t you just go read you’re bible,” he said sarcastically.
Clarissa wadded up the napkin she was holding and threw it at his head, “Fuck you Lucas, I am in here trying to help your sorry ass.”
“I don’t need your fucking help, I don’t need anyone’s help.” He said trying to get to his feet alone. When he stumbled Clarissa was right there to catch him and help him up.
“Yeah….I can totally see that,” she said sarcastically.
“Why didn’t she just tell me……I mean, shit…,” he asked not really directing the question to anyone.
“She did tell you, now look at you,” Clarissa informed.
“Damn it….how could she do this too me, I really liked her you know,” he admitted to her openly.
“Some things are just not meant to be,” she said while wetting more paper towel for his eye.
She walked back over to him and attempted to put the rag on his eye, but he again pushed her away.
“Quit being a baby, and put this on your eye,” she said as she swatted his hand away.
“Why are you doing this, why aren’t you with your friend.” He asked not expecting an answer.
“Well, your right, I think I will leave,” she informed as she headed for the door. Before she reached for the knob, Lucas grabbed her hand.
“No, please stay, I’m sorry I just….I’m just pissed.” He tried to explain
“I don’t know if I am more pissed because she is with another dude, or that she actually left me for another dude,” he kept talking.
“I have never had a girl leave me, or dump me, or not want me. I know that makes me sound like a cocky son of a bitch, but it’s the truth. I just don’t know how to take it.” He added honestly.
Clarissa took the wet towel out of his hand, and took a step closer to him. Gently she brushed his hair behind his ear and placed the towel lightly to his face. He winced and put his hand on top of hers. In that moment their eyes met, and for the first time ever Clarissa really looked at him. His electric blue eyes sparkled in the poorly lit room. She tried to push away all of the feelings that were hitting her, but she found it impossible. He was truly gorgeous. She found it odd that she had never noticed before. She tried to step away, but he squeezed her hand and pulled her closer to him. Neither one spoke, they just stared at each other the way you would stare at a world wonder. The silence that filled the air spoke plenty. Clarissa was finding it hard to breath being in such close proximity with him.
“I…..um…..,” before she could finish her sentence, Lucas lightly pressed his lips to hers. Clarissa was shocked, but she could not control her body, which practically melted at his touch. The kiss was innocent, but neither one could deny its intensity.
Clarissa pulled away first, and took a few steps back. Shaking her head she said, “We can’t …… do this, Melanie is my friend….I um ……I have to go.” She quickly unlocked and opened the squeaking door, and fled the crappy bathroom without looking back. She heard Lucas calling out to her, but she did not stop, instead she picked up her pace. She had to get out of there, get away from him.

“I’m sorry Melanie, I didn’t want to fight him, I really didn’t,” Brice apologized to me for the hundredth time.
“I know, its okay. How about your hand, is it okay?” I asked picking up his hand and studying it for any injuries.
“It will be a little sore, but its okay,” he assured me. I lifted his bruised hand and planted a light kiss across his knuckles.
He looked down at me sitting on the tailgate of his trucked parked in front of my house. “What?” I asked him after a few moments.
He took a step closer to me so that he was positioned between my legs. I looked in to his eyes from my spot on the truck, and he smiled. “Did I ever tell you that you are beautiful?” He asked me, but before I could answer he kissed me. When he pulled on my bottom lip, I opened my mouth slightly, and tilted my head giving him full access. When I felt his warm moist tongue enter my mouth, I met it with my own. I could feel a heat beginning to rise from the pit of my stomach. I wanted to be close to him, as close as possible. I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled hi body closer to mine. I surprised myself by giving out a little moan of disappointment when he pulled away. “So um….. will I see you at school tomorrow?” he asked sarcastically before I swatted his arm.
“When I saw you two together, I freaked out, I didn’t know what to do.” I tried to explain before he brought a finger to my lips.
“No worries,” was all he said.
We spent the next hour or so saying our goodbyes. You ever notice that when you don’t want to leave a person, time flies? I stood there and watched his tail lights disappear into the night, before I turned to go inside.
This had be one huge fucked up day, and I was so relieved it was finally over.
