A fight between friends
Waking up next to Janette was not one of the best things he could have wished for, but it made for something to keep his mind off of what he was going to say. Jason was plagued, the whole night, by images of Veronica’s watery eyes looking at him, knowing what she had seen.
‘But why am I feeling this bad? We are only friends. It doesn’t make any sense...’ He thought. ‘Unless she likes you too.’ A small voice in the back of his head told him. ‘That’s already been proven untrue.’ He protested to himself. ‘When?’ The little voiced asked. ‘Every time she sticks up for Alex instead of me, that’s when!’ He screamed to himself.
Suddenly a small rattling noise near the window caught his attention. He looked over to see Veronica’s head half way through his window and his heart skipped a beat, out of joy and fear. When her eyes met his, he could see they were slightly puffy around the edges. ‘She’s been crying all night.’ She was almost completely through the window but a movement behind Jason stopped her. ‘I didn’t know she was still here.’ She thought.
Jason glanced over at the sleeping girl next to him and was about to creep out of bed when he noticed his lack of clothing. Veronica, realizing the same thing and remembering what she had seen the night before, quickly turned her head away. Jason was able to change into a pair of boxers and go to the window to help Veronica through.
“We need to talk.” She whispered, once inside.
“I know, follow me.” he whispered back. They quietly left the room and went downstairs to the kitchen. He pulled out a chair for her and one for himself. He didn’t offer her any food because he knew this wasn’t the time. Veronica started first.
“I don’t think we can be friends anymore.” she stated bluntly.
“What?” a startled Jason asked, completely thrown off guard. “Why?”
“Because, this has obviously turned into something more and if we can’t be friends what’s the point in even trying...”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa. Slow down. I know feelings have changed, but I chose to ignore them, for YOUR sake, so that we could be friends.”
“But I can’t ignore my feelings.” Veronica looked down at her hands on the table.
“So you’re ready to just throw everything away like that? Who said we couldn’t try and make a relationship work between us?”
“But Alex....”
“Fuck Alex!” Jason could feel his temper and voice rising. “I don’t give a damn about him, and neither should you!”
“But that’s just it. Can’t you see?” Veronica also began to feel heated. “I do give a damn about him!”
“I don’t know why. He doesn’t give a damn about you!” Jason spat the words out before he had time to think about what he was saying.
“You bastard! You know how I feel about him, and how dare you talk like that to me!” she yelled, temper in full swing.
“Well let me let you in on a little news flash sweetie.” Jason was also yelling. “I can say whatever the hell I want ‘cause that’s my brother, who, by the way, managed to do just what I said he would: tear us apart!”
“I think you’ve got that one backwards. You managed to do that just fine on your own, sleeping with that slut up stairs....”
“Why do you even care, huh?!? And she is not a slut. She happens to be a very nice girl...”
At that statement Veronica rolls her eyes.
“And you want to know something else? I only fucked her because she looked like you! That make you happy? Huh!?! Happy now?”
Veronica stared at him for a minute, teeth clenched, before she responded. “Yeah I’m happy. Happy to know that you are a sick pervert. Go fuck yourself Jason, or better yet, get your little imitation of me to do it for you!”
Veronica stormed out the kitchen and was headed for the door when she heard the word that made her stop in her tracks.
“Bitch!”
It echoed in her head and clouded her ears. What was worse, was the fact that it had left Jason’s mouth. Tired of fighting and already hurt from losing her best friend, all Veronica could do was slump her shoulders. No more tears left to cry, she wasn’t angry at the words, just hurt. She lifted her head and kept going for the door until she reached it and let herself out.
Jason couldn’t believe he had just said that to her. He had called her that horrible name. He didn’t mean to say it, but feeling defeated and seeing his friend walk away, it was the one thing that slipped out his mouth. ‘Not that word’ he thought. He stared at the kitchen floor for a while before heading up stairs. Getting to his room he completely forgot about Janette until he saw a piece of paper on the bed.
Jason,
It was fun for that one night, right? Sorry, but I don’t want to be someone else. I like being Janette. And if you only want me because of who I remind you of, then this will never work between us. Good luck with the girl downstairs.
Janette
‘God, she heard’ Jason thought numbly. He read the note a few more times before balling it up and throwing it away. He let himself fall face first on his bed, trying to forget what had just happened, and trying to fight the urge to cry and look out of his window and into Veronica’s room. Little did he know, that Veronica was not 30 feet way, laying in her bed, fighting the same urges.
