”The world is full o' complainers. An' the fact is, nothin' comes with a guarantee. Now I don't care if you're the pope of Rome, President of the United States or Man of the Year; somethin' can all go wrong. Now go on ahead, y'know, complain, tell your problems to your neighbor, ask for help, 'n watch him fly.” M. Emmet Walsh in the movie “Blood Simple”

“His sister, there are more of them in that family?” Judy said and grimaced.

Deb visibly shuddered then looked guiltily up at the stairs. “Oh no, I hope Cain didn’t hear us, He’s part of that family.”

“I don’t care if he is, there is no way that sweet boy is anywhere near as twisted as any of those people.”

James was just returning from the kitchen trying to carry two glasses of wine for the women and his beer.

“Let’s read on. If I drink many more of these I’ll be asleep no matter how nervous I am.”

Judy nodded as she took a drink of her wine and read on.

 March 7

Oh, Diary I am in trouble but I don’t care. I came home an hour late but it was all worth it. Sonny was so wonderful tonight. I can’t say I like his sister though, She creeped me out. Whenever Sonny and I would go off by ourselves to make out or even just talk, she was right there watching, as if she was following us. I am even seriously considering not inviting her to the wedding. That’s right, I said wedding!! Sonny asked me officially tonight. He even gave me a ring. It isn’t a pretty diamond, it’s actually pretty ugly but I could never tell him! He said it was a family heirloom.

Serena kept-

Judy stopped mid-sentence. Deb and James watched her and finally Deb asked, “What?”

Judy shook her head. “His sister Serena? That’s not Sonny’s sister. That’s his wife!”

James sat up, “Are you saying he was passing off his wife as his sister? Why would he do that?”

Deb lowered her voice, “Unless she is both. I have heard of that before! Oh gawd.”

Judy shivered and started to read once more.

-looking at the ring. I think she wanted to use it when she got engaged but Sonny was first. Anyway, I am tired now so ill write later.

 March 11

I am mad at Renee! She said she doesn’t like Sonny so until I break up with him she won’t be my friend anymore. I can’t believe her! Sonny is my life! He’s the most wonderful man in the world! I can’t write tonight.

March 19

It is only 4am and I’m up. The house is quiet and somewhat spooky. I wish I could go see Sonny. I feel sick. I think I have the flu and really hope I didn’t give it to Sonny. I’m going for cocoa. Daddy will be up soon. I think I’ll be nice and make his coffee. I am going to miss him.

It is 6pm; Daddy is gone with that new lady friend of his. I like her. I hope she can make him smile because I sure can’t anymore. He figured out about me having a boyfriend just not who. I hope he never does! At least not until we are married and moving away then maybe he will accept it!

 April 1

I haven’t started yet and this is not an April fool’s joke! I have been sick in the mornings the last few days. I am so scared. What is Sonny going to say? I know we talked about having kids someday but this is too soon. I just hope the test comes out okay. I stole it from the pharmacy.

Well I’m pregnant! I can’t believe this. What am I going to do? Daddy is going to be so mad. I just hope Sonny takes me away and we get married quickly then Daddy will be okay with it! Please please please!

 May 16

I just got out of Daddy’s punishment room. He found out I was pregnant and he took me to Sonny’s house but Sonny was gone. It looked like he had never even lived there. He just went and left me here with Daddy. I hate that room in the barn so much I wish I could burn the whole barn down!

I went to sleep and saw sonny several times in my dreams. I guess pregnancy really messed up my head because I dreamed he was getting married to Serena, His own sister! Daddy said he didn’t but I think Daddy ran him off. Now here I am stuck and going to have a baby. I’ve never been so sad in my life! If I didn’t have a part of Sonny growing in me I would kill myself.

“Why would he just leave? What if she’d had an abortion? He was taking a big chance not seeing her through the pregnancy.”

Judy nodded at Deb and put the book down. “I don’t think I can read anymore. This is heartbreaking! He stayed with her long enough just to make sure she was pregnant.”

oooooooo

Gillian had been kissed before, but never by the person who she had been crushing on since she could remember. Lyle was very good at it and even though her entire body was tense to the point that if someone threw a rock at her she would shatter into a million pieces, it was her dream come true. As Lyle pulled away, she fluttered her eyes open to see him with his eyes still closed and a strange goofy smile on his face. She held the giggle back that was about to burst from her and when he opened his eyes he actually blushed. Usually he was so cocky but seeing him nearly shy was wonderful.

“I’m sorry to just spring that on you, especially now with all that going on.” Lyle’s voice was a whisper and Gillian shook her head hard.

“No, it’s okay. I’ve been waiting a long time for you to do that.”

Gillian could not believe the surprise on his face. She thought it had been achingly obvious that she was head over heels for him for years.

“You are right though, it’s not the best time for this. We’re like those tools in the horror movies that take time out to kiss right in the middle of people getting chain sawed.”

His laugh was sexy as he stood then helped her to her feet.

“Let’s go check on the other love birds. Hope we don’t see penises flying around up there.”

 “Ew, Lyle, that’s sick.”

They went up the stairs and knocked softly. When they heard nothing Lyle shrugged at her and slowly turned the knob. Gillian stuck her head in first but it was too dark to see more than the fact that they were not in the throes of any sort of passion. Gillian walked over to get her purse and noticed Trevor sleeping soundly. She looked around the room then went over and flipped on the light.

“Cain’s not here. Go check the bathroom.”

Lyle ran down the stairs and checked the bathroom, finding it empty he went back and shook his head at her. Gillian hated to do it but she shook Trevor awake.

“What’s going on?” He asked sleepily and looked up into his friend’s worried faces.

 “Where‘s Cain?”

Trevor sat straight up then scurried out of bed. “I don’t know! Fuck you don’t think…”

Gillian and Lyle headed straight for the stairs. While Gillian went into the living room to tell the adults Trevor and Lyle searched the rest of the house.

When Gillian burst into the room asking if anyone had seen Cain the diary was forgotten. They all spread out but when no one found Cain they went back to the living room. Trevor was shaking with fear and Judy was ready to call the police.

Deb stopped her, “What are you going to say? Put another Amber alert out? The old one is still out. Let’s just hope someone sees him.”

Trevor was heading for the door and Judy ran to stop him. “Where are you going?”

“I’m going to get Cain. We all know where he is.”

Lyle stood by the door with Trevor while Gillian stood between them. “We’re going too.”

Judy did not know what to do. She knew she should call the police. but say what? That a boy was going to his father’s house? She went to the living room and grabbed her keys. “I’ll drive.”

Deb and James went to follow but Judy told Deb, “Please stay and read the rest of the diary. We’ll need to know what we’re up against.”

Deb kissed her husband and son goodbye and watched the group leave before going back to the living room and picking up the diary from the floor where it had fallen. She suddenly did not want to touch it. Like it was haunted. Haunted with Eva’s tortured love-sore soul.

She shook her head from these thoughts and started reading.

ooooooooo

Cain walked through the streets of the suburbs and felt much as he had the night he left the hospital. The lights on the tall poles and the trees lining the streets with all the families in warm happy houses struck Cain right in the chest. The lights in the houses showed people in front of televisions and eating around tables. Things he never had, like a real family or a meal around a table with smiles and talk about the events of the day. He knew he could have these things with Judy, Trevor, and the rest of his new friends, but his “real” family would not let it happen. They wanted him, so to keep the people he loved safe he had to go.

After walking more than two miles he reached a row of smaller houses and a car pulled up beside him. The passenger side window rolled down and Caleb’s face, his real face this time, came into it.

“Hello Cain. Ready to come home?”

Cain did not answer he just got into the car and as soon as the door closed Caleb started driving.

“We’ve been so worried about you. Our father has been out of his mind with worry.”

Cain cocked an eyebrow and looked at Caleb. “Really?”

The smirk on Caleb’s face quickly hidden he turned to Cain. “Of course, you are his long lost son. You will be taken into the family right away.”

Cain felt nothing but disdain from his brother as they drove. He took a deep breath and set his mind to take whatever happened so his precious Trevor and the rest of his loved ones were safe. He just could not hide from it any longer. It would be worth it just to not have the dreams any longer. Those horrible dreams of Caleb and his father hurting people.

Caleb pulled into the driveway of a big house and Cain looked up to it in utter amazement. “It’s so big.”

After rolling his eyes, Caleb got out and waved Cain over. Cain walked to the house slowly, taking in the high sitting palace against the mountains as if it was a cathedral. He walked up the steps as Caleb stood at the top tapping his foot with impatience. Once at the top of the stairs the front doors opened and his father stood there with a wide grin.

 “Son! Welcome home!”

His father’s embrace was quick and cold and his aunt stood in the doorway.

“Cain, welcome.”

Cain did not know how he knew this was his aunt, but he knew the blood coursing in his veins was the same as hers.

They walked into the house together and over to some stairs that led to the room in the centre of the house. Inside Cain could not see anything at first until Sonny turned on a single light from a sconce next to the door. Cain saw the walls were black and the floor was dark grey with symbols painted in red around a red circle on the floor. There was a table off to the west end of the room that was set up with candles, a wine glass, black roses and other items making up an altar of sorts. Cain had never seen or imagined a room like this and wondered why he had never seen it in his dreams.

“Son, you are the last in a long line of men-“

 “And women!” Serena interjected.

“Of course my love and women from the Caspian line to stand in a room like this.” Sonny walked around the room with his arms held out and his eyes appraising the greatness of it. All Cain saw was a dark room.

“In many homes in many countries there have been rooms such as this. Many times our ancestors took their powers like your aunt and I did. It’s time for you and your brother to take yours.”

Caleb went to the centre of the room and stood inside the circle. Sonny gestured for Cain to do the same but Cain did not move.

“I don’t understand. What powers? I already see things. I don’t want more, I don’t even want that. I’ve seen the terrible things you’ve done.”

Cain’s voice was low but in the room it seemed to boom. Caleb looked completely annoyed but Sonny did not look fazed.

“Son, you don’t understand yet, but you will. Now that you are back with us you will see why things have to be done, have always been done, to preserve the family.”

Sonny went to his son and took his shoulders in a loving grip. Cain looked into the dark evil eyes of his father and saw nothing but death and sorrow.

“The family is all important. It’s the only thing that matters and you are a part of it.”

“Father just give me his powers like we talked about! He isn’t a part of our family and never will be!”

Sonny turned on his other son with a glare that made Caleb shut his mouth instantly and step back a few steps. He turned back to Cain and held out his hand. Cain watched with fear and awe as the wine glass from the table floated across the room and landed in his hand.

“You can do that when you receive your powers. You are the strongest of the Caspian’s so far. You have powers without being blessed by your ancestors, without the ritual to receive them. You will be the greatest Caspian of all. I knew that when I found my sister she would help me to produce the strongest of all the Caspian witches and it’s true.”

“Father! I thought you said that I was the most powerful Caspian!” Caleb was not afraid of his father, he was angry.

Sonny did not look at his son but his words were like a slap to Caleb.

“You are nothing. You use your hands like any low life killer. Cain is the one with the power. You were a side effect.”

Caleb heard this and ran to the door. Cain watched him leave and tried to go after him but the door closed. He flipped around to see his father’s hand raised at the door.

“You’re not going anywhere.”

ooooooooooo

Deb read many pages of Eva’s sorrow at her father nearly shunning her. She was allowed out of the room for short periods then he would put her back there and she would cry waiting for Sonny to rescue her but he never came.

With the others gone, she began to skim through the pages and found the page of the day before the twins’ birth.

 December 6

The babies haven’t kicked all day. I dreamed of them again. I dreamed of one leading people and killing their father. My father doesn’t understand but then again, he isn’t really my father. My father was a great witch named Fleming Caspian. My mother had an affair with him and conceived me and Robert Jennings, that fucking pig, doesn’t even know it. He thinks by keeping me from my true family, by keeping my children from their true family will make us like him. A sheep following some moral code of not harming others. He does not realize my family is the only one who matters, and that one of my sons who is most deserving will take the life of the other and therefore receive the power that was split between them becoming the most powerful Caspian any of the generations has ever seen.

I will have them tomorrow and my most deserving son will take his power once he comes of age and he will take his father and cut his heart out for leaving me to be tortured and kept in a fucking room for eight months.

Deb got on the phone then and Judy picked up just as they arrived in front of the Caspian house.

“Judy! Eva was a Caspian. She was Sonny’s sister. One of the boys is going to kill the other to get some power or something.”

ooooooooooo

Judy looked up at the dark house. “Oh gawd, Cain!”

Once they were stopped and the headlights were off they filed out of the car. Just as they were walking towards the house, they saw a figure running down the steps.

Trevor ran towards the figure. “Cain!”

Trevor stopped in his tracks once the figure came into view. It was not Cain.

Caleb slowed when he saw Trevor. “Please help me!”

Judy went to him. No matter what kind of a monster he had been raised to be he was still a child. “What’s happening? Where is Cain?”

Caleb avoided Trevor’s hateful glare and looked at Judy pleading, “Please, my father says Cain is the one! He’s going to kill me!”

Judy looked at the house and saw Trevor running in, but before she could go after him Caleb collapsed to his knees clutching his chest. Judy watched him and fell to her knees taking him into her arms. He was screaming in pain and she was torn seeing her son and the other kids running to the house. James was on the phone with 911 as he ran after the kids and Judy was left to watch Caleb pleading with her to help. She laid him in her lap and sobbed as she watched the boy crying like a small child.

“He wanted Cain! I was a side effect!”

Judy ran her hand over his damp hair and watched helplessly as he spit blood out of his mouth. When he started convulsing, she held him and then watched as his body slowed its movement and finally the light drain from his eyes. She quickly laid him down and checked his pulse. He was gone. She started running for the house.

Trevor rushed through the front door and heard the others following him. He went through the house screaming for Cain but the house was quiet and dark. Lyle found the light switches as they ran from room to room but they did not see anyone.

“Where the fuck is he?” Trevor screamed at no one in particular.

They all heard the scream and started running in the direction it came from. They came to a door that would not open and Lyle and James started ramming it. Gillian pulled them back as the door opened. They all saw Cain, the scene behind him looked like a bomb had gone off. What was left of Sonny and Serena Caspian was all over the walls and floors, Cain stood in front of them smiling.
