Fourteen

I fade in and out of their argument, only taking a major interest my mom finally questions him, “And I thought you said you had a heart attack! You big fat liar!!”

I look over at my dad to hear his excuse for this one. “Well, I had to say something, and this was pretty much the only way you’d let me see my daughters.”

“You don’t deserve to see them!!!”

That’s so true… especially after such a horrible lie…

We ended up staying there all day. Crissy ended up taking a long nap in one of the guest bedrooms, and Cherry dragged me off to her personal closet, so that I wouldn’t have to listen to my parents anymore. “Let’s play dress-up!” she exclaims at me, pulling at my shirt. “A young lady shouldn’t be looking like a boy!”

“This is all I could grab on such short notice!” I shout back at her.

After fighting over it for about ten minutes, she manages to snatch my shirt off. “Geez, you’re even built like a guy.”

“Argh, give me my shirt back!” I try to take it from her but she runs to the other side of the room.

“Not until I make you beautiful! But this is gonna be harder than I thought. You’re so flat.”

“Shut up!!”

It takes about two hours for her to do, but by the time I see myself in the mirror, I can’t even recognize myself! “Oh… my god…” She had put me in a cute little blue dress that she used to wear in middle school, and she even dyed my hair blonde. And there’s make-up on my face! I actually… look like a girl. “Wow…”

“Hehe, see? You are beautiful now!” Cherry smiles at me, looking so giddy.

“Um, thank you, Cherry!”

“Of course, anything for my dear stepdaughter!”

… … … Oh, right, she’s married to my dad…

Ew, ew, ew, ew, ew, ew, ewwwwww… Did he have to marry someone so close to my age?!! Argh!!

“Are you alright, Nana?”

“I’m fine, just a little dizzy on the fact that you’re supposed to be… my… Let me just call you Cherry, okay?”

“That’s fine!”

Ugh… For some reason, I can kinda picture Nick doing this sort of thing in his old age… Then I shiver at the thought. That’s too scary to even try imagining for too long. “Hey, Cherry?”

“Yeah?” She’s putting away her make-up kit.

“Why did you marry my dad? Is it because of the money he never paid us in child support…?”

“He what???” Wow, her eyes got huge with that bit of news.

Later that evening, I’m just walking around on my own. I ended up causing yet another fight back at the house… because now Cherry is mad at my dad too and she and my mom keep yelling at him, and then he yells back, so I really don’t wanna be around them now. Sighing, I look up at the sky. It’s hard to see the stars around here… there are too many lights. I wanna go home… “Hello there, miss.” I look next to me, seeing a friendly looking guy about my age. “Are you lost?”

“Oh, no I’m not…” but a quick look around proves otherwise. How long had I been walking?! “Okay, maybe I am, just a little…”

“Haha, okay. Where are you staying?”

“Um…”

“You don’t even know what hotel?”

I frown. “No, it’s not a hotel, we’re staying with my dad…”

He laughs at me a little, causing me to pout more. “I know what that’s like. Come on, we’ll go check a phonebook at my grandpa’s.” Then he takes my hand, saying with a grin, “Don’t want you getting even more lost.”

“I’m good at following people,” I try arguing, but he just pulls me along. I need to move my legs faster to keep up with him. A couple blocks down, I tell him, “My name is Nana, by the way…”

He turns to me rather quickly. “Nana who?”

“Richmond…?”

“Seriously?! Shit, I didn’t recognize you, hahaha. You definitely were not a blonde last time I saw you.”

“And who are you?!” I demand.

“Nathan White. Remember me now?”

“Gah?!” I stare at him in disbelief. “You’re living around here?!”

“Yeah, I’m staying with my grandpa while I attend school.”

“Awesome!”

Nathan used to be my best friend when I was little. He’s also the first boy that Crissy ever had a crush on. I remember starting a fight with her because she told me to stop hanging around with him so that he would like her more… That was back before the divorce.

After the divorce, we were pen pals for awhile, but then addresses changed, and so we hadn’t talked to each other in years. Maybe he was… the first guy I liked too. I take a moment to look at him more as we continue on our way. He’s pretty hot now… Maybe this trip won’t be so bad after all.
