Chapter 13

"Are you sure you want to do this?"

"Of course! I wouldn't have mentioned it if I didn't want to..."

John looked a bit tense about it, but nodded slowly. "I guess. I just don't want you getting hurt or anything..."

"Well, we won't know about that until we actually do this," Jessica added. "Besides, I think it works out well for the both of us."

John sighed, accepting defeat. He knew he couldn't win this arguement, but he still had to give it a shot. Raising his sword he stared down his opponent, his own wife. Jessica too had a staff out, readying for an attack from her husband. She knew he would try to go easy on her, but that would have to change soon. If he didn't fight like he meant it, then there was no way he could get stronger.

John made the first move, casting a basic fire spell, which Jessica countered easily with a water one. Then she decided to surprise him and take the offence. "Ice Knife!" She struck her staff hard on the ground, as water began to rise up in the air. Suddenly the air around them got colder, causing it to freeze, and surrounding them with small spheres of ice. They sharpened and began the assault.

"Air Shield!" John set the shield just in time, the shards bouncing off the barrair of air that protected him from all sides. He certainly wasn't expecting that to happen. He knew she was good with water spells... "Alright, I see your little game... then let's play! Flare Storm!" At this, several large fireballs came out and aimed for her.

Of course, Jessica only smiled, glad to see that John was now taking this seriously. "Ice Wall!" She placed her hands on the ground and a clear wall of ice appeared. As the fireballs struck the wall, it began to melt into a puddle of water. Keeping her hands on the ground, Jessica then shouted "Water Pillar!" to block the remaining blasts. "Alright, now this is getting fun."

A few hours ago, John was staring into the locked book, while Jessica prepared breakfest. He looked at it constantly, knowing that it wouldn't open that way. And still, still he didn't understand what it had to do with anything. He shook his head, it was starting to hurt again. He hardly got much sleep last night. He dreamed again.

A large, white castle stood before him as he looked upward. He turned around, noticing that he was on the edge of a cliff. At the bottom of the cliff was nothing. He couldn't see the ground. Nothing but sky. Was he really so high up?

Turning back to the castle he noticed the doors open. No one was around, nothing coming or going. He walked through the doors, down the hallway as they shut behind him. The hallway seemed to streach forever onward, the ceiling out of sight. Stones of all sizes were placed here and there, as torches blazed. Fountains were also here, and John could feel a gentle breeze blow every now and again.

Then a voice spoke out.

"Come..."

John had never heard this voice before, nor had any clue to who it belonged to. He walked down the hallway, noticing other halls branching out now and again. Some only lasted a few feet, others seemed to go on for miles. Most however, looked as if they were still being built, though there was no one here to build them. Each moment passed and more and more of the hallways appeared, some of them abruptly ending.

"Free your heart."

The voice spoke out again, almost like a command to someone. John steadied himself, raising his blade. He wasn't sure why it was here with him, but he was glad to be able to defend himself.

"Open your mind."

It was getting closer now. John noticed some of these hallways were made of black stone, others grey, most of them white. He found himself facing a hallway carved in black stone.

"Unleash your soul."

Suddenly he could see it, the end of the hallway. It looked like a mighty rumbling was going on inside of it, while the rest of the castle stayed perfectly still.

"Arise!"

The voice rang out once more, and the hallway's end collapsed. Then it became to rebuild itself, going on and on again. Something was different though. No more stone had appeared, but instead some sort of dark substance began to form the hallway. Something seemed to be stirring from within it.

The floor vanished form beheath him and he fell far down.

"Will you... believe?"

John had no idea what the dream was about. He tried to recall dreams from before when, 6 years ago, they told him of something that was going to happen. They told him about Atrios and Beras and Midas and the fight that would ensue. But this was different. He had never been to this place, never knew of it's existance. In fact, the only other time he could remember being that shocked about a place was when he saw the secret room under his house, filled with spells and books and scrolls that, had she been alive, his mother would one day pass onto him, the history of his family.

He was high up... in the sky? No, there wasn't such a thing as a castle that existed in the sky. A mountain? No, he would have seen where the castle had been connected to the ground. So what was that place?

"John? I wanted to tell you something..."

Thus they began to train for the first half of the day, deciding on spending the other half to reach their destination. "Hail Storm!" Jessica struck the ground and once more, water emerged and solidified into ice. This time, the ice began to bring themsleves together, before falling toward John. He struck his sword at one, managing to knock it off course, but unable to break it.

"Damn... thought for sure that-" but the rest was cut off as he jumpped back, another piece of ice threatening to strike, each one almost as big as his body. Back and forth he weaved, dodging them all, until the ground was littered with large chunks of ice. "Is that it?"

Jessica smiled, riasing her hands up. The ice once more few up and circled around. "Oh damn, not the best choice of words." He readied hemself once more, gathering his energy. "Earth Armor!" The ground around him rose up, covering his body like a second skin. He ran towards Jessica, the ice falling and hitting his armor. The armor protected him, enabling him to charge straightfoward, but it was starting to crack and John was losing the energy to maintain it. He tackled into Jessica just as the last ice piece fell and the 'Earth Armor' spell stopped.

Both fell to the ground, John with a look of vitory on his face.

"Lunchtime" was all he said, and both began to laugh.
