Removing the blindfold
Veleska lay unconscious. She was having the greatest battle of her life and it wasn’t physical. Sarai helped to take over her care just as soon as Silvan and Serenity brought her back to the temple.
“Will she be okay? The sisters told me she was still unconscious.”
Serenity was lead back into the room by one of the novice sisters. She had asked if she could change out of her ball gown and put something lighter on. They had a robe and simpler dress that would fit her. Silvan was also in the room. When she entered he smiled and immediately took up residence by Serenity’s side.
“I do not know hun. One of the elder sisters said that Veleska was having a very hard battle with in her self right now. They healed her physically but they can not use a simple healing charm to heal ones spirit.”
“She will be fine. We must believe this for her sake. “She needs us to believe in her strength. She is a very strong woman with a will of iron.”
“I will have faith in her.”
Serenity took an uncomfortable step forward. She still could not see. Being suddenly blind like this was not an easy thing for her. She had many thoughts about it. She felt like people were just catering to her because of Silvan at first.
“Love, let me help you.” Silvan turned her so she faced the chair just beside the bed. “Its right in front of you. Just extend your hand and feel for it.”
Sarai looked up from her self appointed duties. This was good. He was not doing everything for her. Serenity needed to learn to be able to function with her disability.
“I..I’m scared. What if I fall.”
She was half way froze in place. Silvan let his arms wrap around her from behind. He held her very lovingly up against him.
“You should know better. I will not let you fall. Your mother is right across the way as well. You are safe with us.”
“That’s right Princess.” Her mother chuckled. “Now come on. Try to grab for the chair. I’m sure you do not want people leading you around like that. I know you’re an independent girl.”
“Independent and scared.”
Serenity grunted at the statement. She reluctantly pulled from Silvan’s arms though. She was shaken at first. She only inched her way forward in a scoot. This was hard. There were so many images in her mind. She could not trust her self! Was the bed to the right? What if she landed on Veleska and hurt her? Her gut feeling told her that the chair was right there in front of her but could she trust it? These new mental abilities she seemed to be developing were hard enough to accept without having to blindly rely on them.
“I’m right here behind you Serenity.”
His voice comforted her. Serenity sighed and took a leap of faith. Her hand grabbed for the chair. It was there!
“I found it!”
She smiled. Sarai smiled at her daughter. She was reminded of when she little for some reason. She could see her little girl just learning to walk. Young Serenity didn’t want to let go of her mother to make it over to the couch. Sarai had to help her gain trust in her self, just as Silvan was doing for her now.
“Very good Serenity.” Sarai chuckled. “See, we told you that you could do it.”
“Yes and you knew right where to grab. I think you should trust in your abilities. You knew where I was at earlier when we went to find Veleska.’ Silvan sat down in front of her. He leaned over to hold Serenity’s hand. “Maybe if you trust those same senses you won’t be so scared to try now.”
“Its hard though. Everything inside my head feels like its jumbled up.” She pulled her hand away from Silvan’s to touch the blindfold. “I have not tried to remove it.” She had been wearing it for so long that she forgot about it until now. “Maybe I can see. I just haven’t opened my eyes yet to try.”
“Are you sure you want to Serenity?” Sarai was worried that the pain might come again. “I mean absolutely sure?”
“Yes.” Serenity bit her bottom lip hesitantly. “Silvan could you remove it for me. I can’t seem to find the strength to pull it away.”
“Of course I will.” Silvan stood from the chair and slipped him self behind her. “I will be ready to recover your eyes if it still hurts you.”
He was letting her know he was there for her still and to go ahead and try. Silvan wanted her to be the same strong Serenity that she always was despite the blindness that occurred.
“Here goes.”
Serenity took a few deep breaths first. She inhaled and exhaled slowly. Sarai and Silvan could both see that she was trembling slightly. Sarai moved away from the bed side and to the empty chair where Silvan was sitting. She leaned forward and held Serenity’s hand. Silvan placed a hand upon her shoulder and brushed a finger lightly against the expose skin of her neck. Yes, they were both there for her and if Veleska could have she would have been right there beside Serenity as well to support her.
“What if I can’t see still?”
“We will still love you. You will just have to persevere and show your self that you can go on.” Sarai replied. Her hand gave a gentle squeeze. “Now come on. You can do this.”
“Your mother is right. We will not hold it against you. I will never stop loving you.” Silvan added.
Serenity wished that she had their faith in her. She barely could trust her own self to know what was happening. The sisters barely got to explaining their theory about her father before she left them and went to find Veleska. Her mother knew only of the questions the sisters asked. That was about it. She was just as informed as the others at the moment.
Maybe her father was the Varian king. Maybe they were telling the truth about her being only part human. That put a whole new prospective on the term human. Serenity tried to clear her head of the wildly flowing thoughts. They were her excuse to keep her eyes closed.
“Here it goes. For real this time.”
Serenity panted a little. Her right hand held to her mothers tightly while her left grabbed for Silvan’s that was on her shoulder. She forced her self to push open her eyes lids slowly. There was a thin slit of jade green color. Sarai watched the thin line of color expand and turn to a full, pupil-less jade green colored eye.
“Serenity?”
Sarai could only wonder. Could she see? Serenity was not speaking. Silvan moved just to the side and sat along the beds edging. He was just as eager to know him self.
“I..”
The pain was no longer there. Serenity pulled her hands up and rubbed them against her eyes. She wasn’t saying if she could see! Her mother tensed. Silvan sighed, although, he had to admit it. The color of her eyes complimented her well. Now if she could just SEE.
“Serenity? Do your eyes still hurt you?” Silvan tried to question an answer out of her.
“No. The pain is gone.”
Serenity stared straight forward. Was she afraid to say? Come on girl! Her mother’s thoughts were becoming a little impatient.
“That’s good news.” Silvan brought his hand up to Serenity’s cheek and stroked his finger along the curve gently. “Can you see my love?”
He was definitely more calm than Sarai was. She could barely contain her self from just begging Serenity to answer the question.
“No. It’s still all black.”
Sarai could feel her heart sink as Serenity looked down. A tear fell from her and Serenity tried to pull away from Silvan. He would not let her. Her pulled her from the chair and sat her in his lap. She curled up against him and just started to cry. Silvan wrapped his arms around her further and held her. He glanced upwards at an equally upset Sarai.
“It will be alright.”
Silvan had to be both of the girls strength. Sarai found her self hugged up against the prince in tears just like Serenity. They were not for her self. They were for her daughter. Silvan shook his head. He had to stay in control for them. His heart told him to yell and beg the goddess to restore her sight. It was not that he wouldn’t love her for he always would. It was the simple fact that Serenity wanted to see. Silvan wanted to be able to give her everything her heart desired and more.
This was out of his reach. He could not bring sight back. He was told of this change by the sisters and that it sometimes left its owners blind but only for a few hours. When they could open their eyes again sight was usually restored. This apparently was not the case. It made him wonder just WHAT was to happen. All of their lived were becoming unhinged.
“I am going for a walk.” Sarai pulled her self away.”I just need to clear my head. I will return shortly.” She stepped away quickly and exited. She hated losing control of her self like that when her daughter was the one who was hurt. She should be able to be there for her!
“Is mother mad at me now?” Serenity shivered. She tried to hug him as close as she possibly could. “I’m sorry I can not see. I wanted to be able to.”
“No, she’s not mad at you my love. She is mad at her self I think.” He cupped her chin with his hand and brought her face up so he could look at her. “I know what you’re thinking also. Don’t ever think this is your fault. Your mother is your mother. She wants to be here and support you. I feel she is upset with her self because she just doesn’t know how to make it better for you.”
“I don’t know Silvan.” Her cheeks were still wet with fresh tears.”Do you think everything will be okay for us?”
“Yes My love I do. We will all over come this and have our happy ending. This I swear.\"
