Burning Sunlight
The Jeep came to a stop in a clearing causing Jade and James to look around. Jade heaved a heavy breath, if she was going to make it to the woods she was going to have to run. The sun was still overhead and the whole clearing was illuminated.
“I’m sorry Jade I can’t get any closer to the Jungle.” Gadget frowned, “but you could just hang here until dark and catch up!”
“Can you do that thing you did before Alex?”
“Sorry Jade I’m still too weak.”
Jade turned her attention to James, “Can you get the bags”
“Yeah sure,” James pulled his headband off and tucked it into the front pocket of his bag. “What are you planning?”
“I’m going to go for a quick run,” Jade shrugged. She pulled the top of her duster over her head. “This is going to hurt like a bitch.”
“Meet us over there Jade,” Gadget pointed a heavily wooded area off too the left of the Jeep.
“Actually why don’t you wait until Alex and I get the Jeep unloaded that way we can put you out if need be.” James said, concern etched into his features.
Jade nodded. She watched as the others gathered the bags and equipment. James tossed her a blood packet from a cooler that was stashed in the back. She caught it and sank her teeth into the packet almost instantly. A look of pure ecstasy washed over her hardened features as she swallowed greedily.
James and Alex set out pulling the bags from the Jeep and carrying them over to the edge of the clearing. They made several trips to the Jeep and back before they were gathering the last of the bags. James shot Jade a smile before he closed the backdoor and jogged to the clearings edge.
“You ready for this Jade?” Gadget asked as she twisted in the front seat to look at Jade. “I’ll open the door so all you have to do is run.”
“Thanks.”
“Yep! Oh and if you’re on fire James has the extinguisher so try to run towards him.” Gadget nodded, “on the count of three?”
“No just open the damn door.” Jade snarled and pulled her coat back over her head. She took several deep unneeded breathe.
She watched as Gadget got out of the Jeep and placed her hand on the handle. She gave a slight nod then pulled the door open. Jade jumped out and ran for the clearing. Dark smoke started to pour off of her small body and the sound of sizzling flesh echoed in the clearing. Jade held her duster over her head as she continued to run.
The moment her body was in the shade of the treetops she pulled her coat off. She stepped on the burning embers in the lining of her coat as smoke swirled skyward from her body. She gave an annoyed huff before looking towards James and Alex.
“What?”
“You take it so personally.” Alex laughed
“Yeah well see how you like getting burned to a crisp every time you try to take a stroll.” Jade stepped out the last of the burning material.
She turned slowly taking in her surroundings. Her eyes scanned the dense jungle around her. The sweet scent of exotic flowers and damp earth filled her. She let her eyes drift closed as she tried to get her bearings. She could feel the life of the jungle buzzing around her. They had a lot of ground to cover and very little time to do it.
It was not until she felt the gentle touch of James that she pulled herself from her trance, “What?”
“Jade what happened?” His fingers traced the raised and discolored sink on her back.
“Those are the scars of a misspent youth.” She growled and grabbed her duster pulling it over her shoulders. “Don’t worry about it.”
“Jade?”
“James let it go. It was a long time ago. Come on we have a lot of ground to cover.”
James eyed her for a moment but let it go. He grabbed up a few of the bags and turned to Gadget, “Hey I have a general idea of where this place might be. Do you have a GPS on you?”
“Of course. That’s why I’m here!”
“Do you know where we are now? I have a list of a few places and I figured we could start with the ones closest.” James dug around in the large pocket of his cargo khakis. He retrieved and studied the folded map for a few minutes before he handed it to Gadget.
“A few!? There has to be like 20 locations on here!”
“Well I didn’t have much to go on. It’s not like this thing has ever been seen before. For all we know it doesn’t even exist. So I had to create a list of places that it might be based on stories that might have happened. Sorry if it’s not paired down enough for you.”
“Hey man take it easy.” Alex jumped in.
“Why it’s the most fun I’ve had since this trip started.” A smirk creased over Jade’s features as she watched the scene unfold.
James chuckled as he ran his hands over his face and through his mess of curls. “Sorry I’m just frustrated. Everyone’s job is so,” he sighed, “and mine is well guess work. I’m just frustrated.”
“Feel better?” Jade asked, her hands on her hips.
“Not really but what ever.” James started to walk into the jungle.
“Start getting those locations ready,” Jade pointed to Gadget before turning to Alex, “keep her and the bags in your sight. Any problems yell and I will come running.”
Alex nodded, “Where will you be?”
“Me? I’m going after him.” Jade jabbed her thumb in the direction James had taken. She tilted her head back and scented the air. She could smell his musky scent and smiled. She nodded to the rest of her team and headed off into the jungle.
