Thirteen

I continue to just sit there as the movie plays, his hand never moving away from mine. Does Nick even realize what he’s doing? I slowly glance over, and see that Crissy is still hanging onto his arm, and Nick looks kind of annoyed by it. Is it bad that I’m glad he’s annoyed…?

After the movie is finally over (I even shed a few tears too), we walk out of the theater. Then Crissy gets the most ridiculous idea ever… “Let’s all get ice cream!”

“No!” I shout, then getting embarrassed. “Um, look, I just don’t think it’s a good idea…” I try saying, but Crissy isn’t listening to me anymore.

“Come on, Nick!” She starts tugging on his arm a little, but he pulls away.

“Look, Crissy,” he says, “you’re… nice, but… I already like someone else. Sorry.”

“Okay then… Alec, wanna go get some ice cream?” she suddenly beams at me.

“Uh…”

“You can go, Alec. I need to go see my professors at the university anyway.” He gives me a small smile. “Just remember to bring some food home so we can stuff Takeru’s mouth with it and get him to shut the hell up.”

“Okay, right. Bye.” I wave at him until he’s out of sight, walking to his school.

“Ohhh, Nanaaa,” my sister says to me, pinching my cheek. “I think he likes you!”

“Oww… Do you even want that?” I glare at her lightly.

“Hahaha, I was just trying to keep him from kissing you, deary!”

“He wouldn’t even want to!”

“Are you so sure about that, Nana?” She smiles more at me. “I’m pretty sure he was talking about you.”

I sigh at her. “But I’m supposed to be a guy, remember?”

“Yeah, I know that. But we should leave this super-public area. People are starting to give us weird looks.”

You should be used to that by now, but I keep my mouth shut.

I come home later that night. After apologizing to the guys about forgetting to bring home food, I go to my room for awhile. Laying down on my bed, I sigh sadly. I don’t think I can handle this much longer.

“Alec, phone for you,” I hear Nick say through the door.

Phone call? I get up and go out to the kitchen, picking up the phone. “Hello?”

“Nana, we need you to pack up and come with us,” my mother suddenly says.

“Why pack up?”

“Your father just had a heart attack.” What…? “He wants to see you and Crissy before…”

With a heavy sigh, I tell her, “Fine, I’ll get packed…”

“Good. I’ll be over to pick you up tomorrow,” and she hangs up. I put the phone down too, feeling numb to it all. My father’s heart attack was his own fault. I don’t even want to go, but they’re making me. He was always so rude though, and cheated on Mom multiple times. That’s why they got the divorce when I was eight. I’m glad they did, too, because things had been getting even scarier, with him pinning her to the floor during a fight, and her trying to choke him back. I remember running to my and Crissy’s bedroom, just hiding and crying in the corner. I was so scared.

So then why do I have to see him now? Just because he had a heart attack? I don’t want to!

“Is something wrong?” Takeru asks me, both him and Nick looking at me.

“My dad had a heart attack, that’s all…” I tell them quietly, going back to my room. That’s all they need to know…

After a long plane trip all the way to California, we take a cab over to Dad’s house, and we see a girl about my age there with him. He smiles lightly at us when we walk over after paying the driver, carrying our luggage. “Girls, so glad you could make it. This is my wife, Cherry.”

“Hello,” the girl greets us, smiling.

Ew… He married a girl the same age as me?? “Um, hi…”

“Hehe, you’re so cute with short hair! Every time I see a picture of you, you always have long hair. Nana, right?”

“R-right…”

Crissy just glares at her lightly, as does our mom. “Maybe you’re not as sick as you said, Robert,” Mom growls, “if you can play around with young, gold-diggers like her.”

“Oh, Cherry is a nice girl,” Dad tells her. “Much more creative than you were.”

“You were a slob and never cleaned up after yourself.”

“And you were always such a perfectionist. How often do you think you annoy the hell out of the girls?”

“Well, whether I annoy them or not, I’m glad I kicked you out of the house when I did! What the hell are you doing, marrying girls this young?!”

Ugh… I knew I should have stayed home…
