Chapter 13
cobraqueen: Hehe...
Avernion: Heh, nice. ;)
kylee: Well, you'll find out if she is or not in this chapter. ;)
Sorry that there isn't much on the review replies.
I’m SOOOOO SORRY!!! I know it’s taken me forever to update, and I’m planning to change that. I’ve been working and helping on other stories, so I didn’t have much time for this one.
I’m not good at estimating, but I’m thinking that this story will be finished in at most five more chapters.
And I’m not sure if I said this already, but I’m planning on a sequel, maybe even a prequel. Though if I do have a sequel, it might not have much of a plot.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Damien barely kept himself from falling down, and taking the creature with him.
Vic had been walking down the hallway, and heard Damien hit the wall. He barged into the room, not quite sure what he’d be able to do if it was the Siren, but he quickly calmed down at what he saw.
“Oh, it’s just Angel,” He breathed out a sigh of relief, and Damien sent a glare his way.
“Just Angel?” He said, and winced when Angel still didn’t remove his teeth. The merman was biting into this shirt, but that was virtually no protection to his shoulder.
“FISHY!” The three men heard screamed from the hallway, and Damien was pushed against the wall again, as Angel was tackled from behind.
Angel slowly retracted his teeth, and stood back, before leaning down to greet Kevin.
“I’m going to go tell Hector….” Vic said, though silently wished he didn’t have to go alone.
“I’m fine, thanks for asking,” Damien muttered, loud enough for Vic to hear, who only shrugged.
“Are you alright?” He was a little late, and Damien just continued to glare at him, before checking his shoulder.
Because it was black, he wasn’t able to see much, but there was a damp spot on his shirt. He slid it off the side, and was met with an oval of teeth marks.
‘What’d you do that for?’ Damien asked, but all he got was silence. For a minute, he thought that the link might have been broken, but Angel had said blood, and Damien was sure that the merman must have gotten some after the bite.
And so, because of that, he figured out that Angel was just ignoring him.
At the moment, the merman was squatted down, staring at the child, who stared back, giving an occasional bounce and smile.
Damien realized that they were talking, and he even found out that he could hear a sort of whispering noise, as if two people were actually talking very quietly, enough so that he couldn’t make out any words.
“I guess I’m going to go now.” Vic said again, watching the other three, and still hoping that Damien would agree to go with him, if only to ease his fear of being alone with a Siren on the loose.
“You go do that…” Damien said, eyebrows scrunched, trying to concentrate, to see if he could get Angel’s attention. There was something they needed to talk about. Namely who the Siren actually was, and if the merman could tell where she was.
‘Why are you ignoring me?’ Damien tried again, and only managed to get a glance. Something else, why did Angel bite him?
“I should probably take the kid as well,” Vic sighed. He couldn’t let Kevin running out and about, and he wasn’t sure if he trusted Angel after the display of him and Damien.
“But I don wanna go! I wanna play with the fishy!” Kevin yelled out, pouting, the look in his eyes saying he wasn’t going to do anything until he got his way.
“He’ll come with us.” Vic said, and Damien turned to look at him. “We can find a better place to keep him safe.”
Damien thought it over. Yes, it would be easier, but first he had to see if Angel was actually going to listen to him.
It seems he didn’t have to worry, because Angel suddenly stood up, Kevin in arms, and walking towards Vic.
Vic stared for a moment, before turning around, and walking out the door, Angel not too far behind.
Damien followed too, trying to figure out what he did to piss Angel off, but he couldn’t think of anything. He was about to resort to trying to annoy the merman, when he finally said something.
‘You left me alone.’ Angel told him, not turning around as the walked down the brightly lit hallways.
‘I had to go do something,’ Damien replied, catching up to walk beside Angel, who wouldn’t look at him.
‘And you couldn’t take me?’
Damien was about to retort to that, but thought better of it. Angel had a good point, he could have been attacked while Damien was gone, and then it would have been the vampire’s fault.
‘I’m sorry,’ Damien apologized, Angel finally looked at him, and the man could have sworn the merman was pouting. ‘I won’t do it again.’
Angel still seemed a little angry, but for the most part, he let it go.
‘Good.’
They were at Hector’s office now, and Vic was heading in, while thinking that it might have been a good idea if they were a little quicker with this special piece of information.
Hector was sitting behind his desk, going through papers. He looked up when the ragtag group entered, and was about to start jokes, when he saw the grave, serious look on Vic’s face.
“There’s something we have to tell you,” Vic said, and Hector remained quiet, listening intently as Vic relayed what he’d found out.
“Are you sure about this?” Hector asked, and Vic nodded.
“Who else could it be? The attacks didn’t start until after she came.” Hector thought about it. Yes, he was right. ‘Mrs. Barlows’ also never left her room. God knows where and what’s she’s doing now.
“Then what’s the plan?” Hector asked, standing up and cracking his knuckles. Vic looked at him as if he’d gone crazy, before shaking his head.
“Tell John.” Even Hector knew that wasn’t going to go over well. When John found out who the real Siren was, then he was going to be pissed at everyone for letting it happen.
And if there was the small chance that they were wrong, that the kid might have even lied, well, they were going to be in total hell.
“Have fun with that.” Hector said, and Vic practically withered.
“I have work to do?” Vic tried, but Hector only shook his head. “Then come with me.”
The more the merrier, Vic used to say. Now it’s just so he would more protection. It wasn’t his fault that he was an easily frightened man.
“Hold on,” Hector said, shuffling a few more papers around, and Vic waited, moving from one foot to another, anxious to get something done about the Siren. This was a serious matter!
“I’m going,” Damien said, turning around. If they weren’t going to hurry, then he wasn’t going to bother waiting. Angel turned around, and was about to follow, when Kevin jerked suddenly.
“It’s the lady!” Everyone turned to look where Kevin was now pointing, practically hanging over Angel’s shoulder to get a better look out the window in Hector’s office.
And, as the boy said, the woman claiming to be his mother was outside, looking back and forth, towards the docks.
Towards the boats.
There was an exit nearby Hector’s office, and he made for it quickly, not caring that the man had no weapons whatsoever.
There was no way in hell he was going to lose his chance out of here, and not be able to go home to his family.
The ‘woman’ didn’t notice the others coming up behind her, Hector barreling towards her, intent on at least surprising her.
When his feet hit the dock, the woman felt the reverberations, and turned around.
She saw the man coming closer and closer. Her eyes widened, then she opened her mouth, and screamed.
Hector was just about to hit her, when all of a sudden he was forced to a stop.
While the woman’s screams continued, Hector looked down angrily at Damien who was now in front of him, holding him in place.
“It’s not her.” Damien said, and Hector looked back at the woman who had finally quieted down, and was now in tears.
“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry…” She said, bringing a hand to her face, before looking up angrily at everyone. “But I was supposed to be ‘Mrs. Barlows,’ not that whore,” she said the last part spitefully.
“What the fuck are you talking about?” Hector said, not even trying to watch his mouth around a lady, too confused and angry, along with his adrenaline still pumping hard.
The woman went from crying to saying spiteful words about the real Mrs. Barlows, and eventually came out with the story.
She was Mr. Barlows’ fiancée about ten years ago, until the other woman stepped in. She’d been planning revenge. The only problem was, was that she wasn’t the smartest tool in the shed, so she decided she was going to try and sabotage Mr. Barlows’ ‘great project.’
Vic and Hector stood there and stared.
“This isn’t a place for some kind of drama shit,” Hector rubbed a hand over his face.
The woman went on. She’d but some kind of drug in the other woman’s drink, making her sick. She’d paid off the locals to keep quiet about it, and then took Kevin here.
She was the one who messed up the monitors, which was only the start of the plan, but once people started dying, she wanted nothing more than to get out of there.
Hector cursed under his breath again. They were wrong. She wasn’t the Siren.
Damien was still standing in front of him, looking pissed as well, and a thought came to him. How the hell was that little man able to get ahead of him and stop him?
And then, how did he know?
He wasn’t going to dig into right now. They had more important things to do. Namely getting the woman to John.
It wasn’t much longer when the group was trudging towards John’s office this time. They’d managed to ‘convince’ the woman, Crystal, to come with them.
John himself was writing in a notebook, his office in more order than any.
John looked up, eyebrow raised as he looked at everyone before him. Finally, “What?”
Again, Vic had to explain all that had happened, Crystal putting in her bit at the end when she was prompted, this time with more spite and less tears.
“Then the Siren is still out there?” John said, more calm then the other scientists thought he would be. In truth, he congratulated them. Even though they had the wrong person, which could have ended very badly, but it helped, in some way. They found out Crystal’s true identity, for one.
“But, it has to be someone here,” Vic said, and John was about to reply, when all of a sudden, a bloodcurdling scream ripped through the air.
Avernion: Heh, nice. ;)
kylee: Well, you'll find out if she is or not in this chapter. ;)
