Chapter Thirteen
Kara found herself in a plastic booth with a Big Mac before her as children ran past her to their mother. Alex sat across from her, eating silently and taking no notice of her lack of hunger.
“What was going on when I walked into the office?”
Alex looked to her, showing no surprise in his eyes to her question.
“Nothing, Daniel just has a lot on his mind right now, his job isn’t easy dear.”
She stared down at her tasteless meal and lowered her voice.
“I know, I just felt like something was wrong.”
He chuckled at her as he took a drink of his soda.
“I guess it wasn’t hard to figure that out was it? All I can say is that he’s had a lot on his mind lately. But the only person who can tell you what is Daniel, I can’t say another word.”
He wiped his lips and wadded up the paper from his burger, tossing it across the room and into the trashcan.
“Why can’t you say anything?”
She had to prod, he was peaking her curiosity and her worry now.
“Because it’s none of my business dear. Now, lets go take this food to Daniel; I’m sure he’s starving by now.”
They walked out of the not-so-fine eating establishment and to Alex’s car. His cell phone went off as he slid into his seat and watched her buckle herself in. He seemed used to talking and driving at the same time, he even buckled himself in as he answered and started the car.
“Detective Harmenn speaking.”
She watched him as he pulled skillfully from the parking space and into city traffic, while still seeming totally involved on the phone.
“What? Why my place, why not just take her to yours?”
Kara stared out the window to give him his privacy but her hearing was keen on the conversation, they were talking about her.
“Okay, I see. Did you finish the paperwork?”
It was Daniel, he finished everything already?
“Okay, I’ll take her to my place but you better be there quick, I still need to get back and I don’t want to leave her there.”
He lowered his voice as if he didn’t want her to hear, but she would hear everything he had to say. What was going on?
“I know, but you said she doesn’t like to be alone.”
He sighed heavily and made a seemingly sudden turn at the light.
“Okay, alright, see you there.”
Kara looked to Alex until he answered her, sparing only a few seconds of silence.
“We’re going to my apartment. Apparently Daniel has finished his work for today and he’s taking you someplace on this end of town. He’s going to pick you up at my place so I can go back to work.”
She blushed a little, what was Daniel planning?
“You can leave me there if you want, you don’t have to stay with me.”
It was a lie; the last thing she wanted was to be alone. She sighed to herself as Alex examined her sad expression. She had been living with Daniel almost a week and she was still having anxieties about being alone.
“Nonsense, I can wait for him to pick you up, he shouldn’t be long anyway.”
She silenced then, whatever he wanted to do. She didn’t want to keep him from his work but at the same time she felt if she continued to push he could be talked into leaving her there, and she didn’t want to be alone. They pulled up to a plain looking building and went inside. She was surprised to find that it looked a lot like Daniel’s building with a few differences. They took the stairs, Alex living only on the second floor, and went to the last door down the hall before the next flight of stairs. She memorized what street the building had been on and what door was his and on what floor as she walked inside. It was painfully clean for a man’s home, but she should have expected that from Alex. The living room and kitchen were divided tastefully by an open top bar and counter.
“It’s not much but it’s home I guess.”
Alex’s voice brought her back, she didn’t realize she had walked across the living room, she could be so dull minded sometimes.
“Hey guys I hurried as fast as I could, get your ass back to the office Captain is having a conniption fit.”
Daniels voice put a smile on Kara’s face as she turned to find him in the doorway.
“Oh wow, I wasn’t expecting you this soon. I just let her in.”
“I know but I figured why not use the siren in the car just this one time.”
An evil grin touched Daniel’s lips as Kara went to his side. Alex followed her out and locked his door behind him.
“I’ll get back to the office then, you two have fun.”
Kara smiled to him, she had found a new ally and friend through Daniel, she wasn’t as alone as she thought.
“Now you know where I live, if anything should happen dear and you can’t get to Daniel, come here and you’ll be safe. I keep a spare key under the potted plant down the hall if you need to let yourself in.”
They walked down the hall together to the stairs but Alex held Daniel back a moment causing Kara to turn and look at them both strangely.
“Go on Kara, we’ll be down in a minute.”
She nodded and went but a strange feeling was resting in her stomach again, it was the same feeling she had when she walked into the office and Daniel was angry with Alex. What had happened between them?
“Are you going to talk to her?”
Daniel pulled his arm away from Alex’s grip a bit roughly as he shot a careful glance down the empty stairwell.
“No, not today.”
“Daniel please, you need to say something to her, if she finds out on her own-“
“I know, I know okay. I’ll tell her, I will, just not today, not yet.”
Daniel began his decent down the stairs, telling Alex the conversation was over and he followed silently. He knew Daniel was upset with him but someone needed to push him. If Kara found out on her own she could be devastated, more so than if Daniel just told her. He had a feeling she wouldn’t care as much as Daniel thought she would.
Kara gave them both a smile as they approached; she was standing near the doors of the building and watching the people and cars as they went by. Daniel put his arm around her slender shoulders as they parted ways with Alex outside and he led her to his Cadillac around the corner.
“What are we doing?”
He gave her a slight smile as he climbed inside and started the car.
“Oh just finding you someone to stay with you while I’m away at work. I hate leaving you there, you get so lonely and it makes me feel bad.”
She gave him a strange look causing him to laugh at her as he pulled into a parking space outside a small shop. It was a pet shop. Kara looked to him excitedly as he studied her face.
“What am I getting?”
He got out and walked around to meet her on the sidewalk.
“Anything you want.”
They went inside the small shop to be met with animal sounds and smells from all corners of the room. The floor was a mess with shavings, hair, and the occasional dropping. Birds sang their songs from cages and filters hummed from the fish tanks on the back wall. A small old man came from behind the glass counter to her left and smiled kindly to them both.
“Looking for anything in particular today?”
Daniel drew his attention as Kara began to wander a bit, listening to the conversation but examining a tank of lizards.
“Not really, we’re looking for something that could be a good companion, but is somewhat easy to maintain.”
The man smiled.
“It sounds like you want a pocket pet, let me show you our selection.”
Kara followed Daniel and the shopkeeper to a few cages along the sidewall. They were lined with shavings and had tiny wooden and plastic houses in them. She looked closer as the old man lifted one of the houses to uncover tiny furry bodies. Kara giggled as they moved and woke from their slumber, five tiny little mice.
“Can I touch them?”
The man nodded to her as she put her hand in the cage, they scattered until they realized this was not a thing to harm them, and it wasn’t long before they were sniffing and crawling about her fingers. Movement in a neighboring cage drew her attention as a palm sized rodent stood on her hind legs to sniff at the newcomer.
“What is that?”
The man smiled larger than before, if it was possible.
“That is a rat, they wouldn’t be a person’s idea of a good pet but they truly are. Very personable and friendly and smart too; that is if you can get past their tail.”
She went to that cage and felt sad; she was all by herself, left behind and without littermates to play with.
“You can pick her up if you like, rats don’t bite, to be bitten by a rat means you did something deserving of such a thing; they never bite otherwise.”
Kara scooped her up carefully to find her scared and apprehensive but after sitting in her lap a while and getting to know her scent and her touch she began to explore, even going as far as inside her shirt. She didn’t notice how long she had actually played with the rat until Daniel tapped her on the shoulder holding a metal wire cage, food, bedding, and a water bottle for her.
“If she’s what you want I’ll pay for everything, I think she likes you.”
Kara giggled as she perched herself on her shoulder and sniffed the air before her.
“Yeah I want her Danny, she’s all alone here, I can’t leave her.”
“Okay, I’ll pay and put the stuff in the car real quick.”
Kara held her in her hands and looked at her. She was all white, save her tanned head and stripe down her back. She had a pink tail and pink hands and feet. And her eyes weren’t beady like rats in the movies; they looked almost brown instead of black. She ground her teeth happily and cleaned her face as Daniel came back for her.
“Ready to go?”
Kara nodded and followed him out to the car. She watched her new friend closely as they drove, making sure she didn’t fall or try to crawl under the seat.
“What are you going to name her?”
Kara giggled as she made a beeline to a half eaten Carmello bar sticking out of Daniel’s pocket.
“Hey!”
Kara picked her up and put her in her lap again as she cleaned carmel from her paws.
“I think I’ll call her Carmella, she had such a pretty carmel covered face and she seems to like it.”
When they reached the apartment building Kara hurried inside excitedly as Daniel grabbed the things, making the elevator only because she held the door for him. Kara unlocked the door for Daniel; since his hands were full, and helped him open the packaging and boxes on Carmella’s new things. Kara laid the bedding out and filled her water bottle as Daniel placed her wooden house and filled her food bowl. It was all ready. They moved it into Kara’s room on the table next to her bed and placed Carmella inside to let her get used to her new home. Kara laid on her bed and watched her new friend sniff and inspect her surroundings. Daniel’s voice came faintly to her from the kitchen as she rested her head on her pillow and closed her eyes.
“I’m going to fix something to eat, are you hungry?”
No answer, he chuckled to himself as he walked down the hall and poked his head into her room. She laid on her bed sleeping peacefully as Carmella settled into her home as well. He carefully slipped her flip-flops off and turned her light off, closing her bedroom door behind her. He smiled to himself. All she needs is someone to be there, she was sleeping in her own bed by herself now, all thanks to Carmella the rat.
