Recap- Clara saved Aiden's life by unwillingly giving up her blood as a cure. She woke up from 3 days of sleep and got intruduced to the crazy doctor Sato. Now Clara is supposed to get a reward for saving Aiden, but has decided to bitch at him...what will happen?
**********************************************************************************
The sound of chuckling jarred Clara from her fit. She moved her head to the astonishing sight of Aiden chuckling at her misery.
“Hate me huh? Well human get in line. You’re not the first and certainly won’t be the last” replied Aiden trying to cover up his laughing.
“You…you monster” gasped.
“Perhaps I am a monster, but being a royal asshole, as you put it, comes with the job, otherwise my council would walk all over me. Besides, I am what I am, deal with it or end it”
“What?”
“You heard me human” replied Aiden, reaching under some pillows. He retrieved a hidden dragger. Clara’s eyes widened in horror, but Aiden merely placed the weapon in front of her. “If life is too hard for you here, then end it”
“Huh?”
“Like I said end your misery if you please; makes no difference to me. You surly weren’t expecting me to pat you on the head with fondness, like we made some deep connection. Dream on, fool”
A fresh round of tears rolled down Clara’s face.
“For Keeva’s sake stop crying. Crying never solved anything…”
“What am I supposed to do?! I hate it here, this isn’t my home, and you…you don’t understand anything” wailed Clara.
“Shut the hell up, for starters” grumbled Aiden.
“Bastard!” cried Clara.
“Seeing that you are in the mists of breaking down, I’ll be generous and disregard your disrespect” added Aiden, watching the girl pound on his bed with her tiny fists.
Clara ignored him, and continued beating on his bed, screaming into the covers. This fit of hers went on for five minutes till Clara started to lose steam. Aiden remained silent, watching the girl with little interest.
Finally, Clara calmed down.
“Done?” asked Aiden.
Clara nodded in response. “Good, now lets’ get this over with. Make your request”
“Huh? Your…you’re actually going to…”
“I said I would; now get on with it, unless you want to carry on your tantrum” growled Aiden irritated.
“Could you…” began Clara.
“If you’re asking me to send you back to your world, I cannot. The portal lies in demon territory and I will not deal with them. We have had an ignore the other policy for over a thousand years; I will not break that policy for you” said Aiden.
Clara felt a new wave of misery befall her, but she half expected that kind of answer from him. “I don’t want to be a slave” she whispered.
“Are you sure is that what you want?” asked Aiden.
“Why?” asked Clara. Clara learned long ago to get each and every detail you can before making a decision.
Aiden almost looked disappointed that she had asked for a reason. “Well, as a helot of the castle, I have an obligation to care for you ’indirectly’ but still care. However, if I am to grant you your freedom, you are no longer a burden to me…”
“Meaning that I…”
“Yes, you will be kicked out of the castle. I warn you human, if you think it is hell inside these walls, the streets are even worse. I doubt you’ll be able to reach the border on your own, and no one will aid a human”
Complete desolation washed over Clara like a tidal wave. There was no hope; she would remain a slave for the rest of her life.
Life, what life, this isn’t a life, it’s a nightmare. I’m screwed nine ways to Sunday, thought Clara. Her eyes drifted to the dagger lying innocently in front of her. It’s a way out; you could be free in death, Clara.
Mindlessly, Clara reached for the blade. Her shaking hand closed around the hilt, ready to pull it towards her. However, a heavier hand fell atop hers, stilling Clara.
“There’s another way” whispered Aiden. Clara merely looked up at him blankly. “You could become a citizen of the empire, human”
“Liar” croaked Clara miserably.
“I am not lying. As a citizen you would be free of enslavement and have all the rights of a Kakonia” his eyes held seriousness.
“…”
Aiden huffed, pulling away from the red head. Straightening himself, the king began his explanation, “After the Great War, on the border lands there were mixed bloods, of Kakonia and Aadrinian heritage. You can see them today; there are the ones with dark hair and skin, like Jarard. Anyway, after the war, they were treated as surfs or helots, far below an average citizen, even though they sided with the empire. Many years ago I introduced a policy which allowed them to become equal citizens of the empire, despite the prejudice of our xenophobic council. In which case, you could be eligible to become one of us. There is no restriction on humans” finished Aiden.
“How…how do I do it?” asked Clara, some life returning to her eyes.
“You have to be loyal to the empire and renounce all ties to whatever society you came from, second; you need to be productive for the good of the empire. Finally, you must participate in our customs. You have two- year probation in which to establish these three conditions. Once the two year period is up, file the paper work and I’ll approve it. The catch is, you can’t be a helot for this to work” stated Aiden.
Clara’s eyes dimmed again “Then why tell me that, I am a helot if you have forgotten” whispered Clara brokenly.
“Yes, you are a helot. However, I can up your status to surf in which you would only have to hold a job in service for the castle or a noble family”
“Really?” the news got Clara’s attention. “What kind of job?”
“Well, Andrew has said that you can read and somewhat write our language, so a scribe would be a good fit for you” said Aiden dully.
“A scribe?” repeated Clara.
“Basically, you go where you’re told, and write down what is said, like letters, meetings, trails, etc”
“So it’s like a recorder, but why give this chance to me?” asked Clara eyeing Aiden.
“Suspicious little thing aren’t you. Look I fulfill your request and one of our scribes has died so he needs to be replaced. Believe it or not, it’s hard to replace scribes.” Stated Aiden wearily, “I swear I must be going soft in my old age”
“Why did the other scribe die?” asked Clara, wanting to cover all her bases.
“There is a slight occupational hazard. He was scribing for Ziggy…I mean Lord Siegfried Von Krieg. An assassin tried to off Siegfried, but the scribe got in the way, and yeah”
“Great…” groaned Clara.
“None of that, human! I’m going out on a limb for you. This little gesture will damage my reputation in front of the council, and those vultures love pointing out my flaws. Fucking morons need to stop bitching at every little thing” muttered Aiden darkly.
“Does the council really hold that much power over you?” asked Clara before she could stop herself. Aiden fixed her with a glare, not as hateful as it could have been.
“I say it’s almost half and half. Sometimes they win and sometimes I win. The council is made up of all the noble families in the empire. There are over a hundred of them, and the majority of them can’t see passed their own private world. I, on the other hand, am more a people person. They want more taxation, I want less; they want to limit education to the elite, I want to open it up for everybody, etc. They hate me, and I hate them, it a constant game of tug of war. I wouldn’t say they have total power over me nor can I say I have total power over them” huffed Aiden.
Wow, it’s like…home, just another messed up political system, thought Clara.
“I guess I can’t blame the bastards for limiting my rule, they wouldn’t want a repeat of before”
“Huh?”Questioned Clara
“Nothing, so is this what you want or not?” asked Aiden fixing his cold eyes on Clara.
Clara took a moment to think and weigh her options. I really got little choice but to accept or forever be a slave.
“Fine” agreed Clara, staring down Aiden. The two held each other’s gazes for a moment till Aiden broke it.
“Great, go to Andrew and tell him your news. Tomorrow morning report to the Scholars Tower. There you’ll be schooled in our language, society, and blah, blah….” Aiden sunk down into the bed, his eyes half lidded.
“Aiden?!” asked Clara alarmed.
“I’m fine, just tired. Fucking assassin…” answered Aiden drowsily.
“Is there anything else I need to know?” asked Clara.
“Someone else will tell ya other details…relax, you’ll be fine…just take it one step…at…a…time” Aiden trailed off as he fell asleep.
Clara was surprised that Aiden fell asleep on her like that.
I mean he knows I hate him and a weapon is right there. I could kill…him…Who am I kidding? I know I couldn’t do it, and he sure as hell know I wouldn’t either. Damn bastard always seem two steps ahead on me, thought Clara darkly.
She stared at Aiden for a while, he look peaceful as he slept; with his head titled slightly to the side and mouth faintly ajar letting out warm puffs of breathe. In some ways, he didn’t look real. Clara had never seen someone so young looking with pure white hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes.
Great…how cliché….he looks like an angel when he’s sleeping, what a lie, thought Clara, but I know he’s the devil. A scribe, huh? Become a citizen of this backwards place? Does that mean I’ll never be able to go home? This is not what I wanted, but I guess…I guess if this is going to be my new home…I need to get used to it…
“Wow, Clara, you wear out the king already” laughed a familiar voice. Clara turned her head to find the good doctor and finally returned.
“Where the hell have you been?” growled Clara.
“I said was going to get his highness’s medicine. Why? Did I take too long?” smiled Sato, titling his head innocently.
“Never mind…jerk” huffed Clara.
“How did it go?” asked Sato, moving closer to the bedside.
“I’m been upper to surf and have a new job…scribe. He says that I can become a citizen” explained Clara.
“That’s good…”
“It isn’t want I wanted…” interrupted Clara.
“You should be grateful, very few get this opportunity” stated Sato
“I know…but I’m not too excited about it. If…if I became a citizen of the empire, I could travel around, couldn’t I?” asked Clara.
“I suppose…” answered the doctor.
“Then I could still make to the border and…”
“It wouldn’t be a good idea, Clara. Your citizenship would mean little to demons, even full blooded Kakonia that live on the border are captured by demons and used as food or slaves. Besides rumors say that the demons are in the mist of political unrest. Unlike us Kakonia, the demon political system consists of the Demon King and the Demon-lords. While the Demon King sits atop the pyramid, the Demon lords are also very powerful, and their territories are more like independent countries. It’s isn’t the most united nation in the Fire Realm.”
“Demons fight a lot with each other?” asked Clara.
“That is an understatement; there is no other empire that has as many civil wars then the Demon Empire. Leadership is based on strength and not lineage unlike here. Even if demons are considered an advance society, in many ways they are more savage then us” finished Sato.
“So there is no hope of me retuning home” stated Clara sadly.
“I didn’t say that, I just said for right now, it’s a dangerous, perhaps in a four or five years the conflict will die down, and then, maybe you’ll be able to leave here” smiled Sato “Or maybe you’ll find that you don’t want to leave”
“Fat chance of that” scoffed Clara.
Soon Sato and Clara left the kings chamber and went their separate ways. Clara wasn’t thrilled about the fact that she had an appointment with the crackpot doctor in three days to check on her health. However, overall the day wasn’t shaping out to be too bad; at least the red head wasn’t a helot anymore.
I’m moving up in the world, thought Clara happily, making her way to Andrew’s office.
The red head was about to turn a corner when several figures appeared in front of her. Clara unfortunately recognized the chamber maids that had been tormenting her. What was worse, it seemed Belinda the mega bitch was leading the pack, a pack of pissed off looking maids.
“You must think you’re hot shit!” roared Belinda.
A shiver of fear was building in Clara as she made a step back. What the hell? What have I done now? Clara was about to voice her thoughts when Belinda spoke first.
“Who do you think you are?! I for one don’t believe you saved the king!” announced Belinda, heaving her chest enough to make her boobs bounce.
“Huh?” asked Clara, not sure what the hell was going on.
“Don’t play dumb, if you can help it. The whole castle is talking about it” spat the maid. “Fighting alongside the king against the assassin, and actually saving his life by sucking out the poison”
“The fuck?! What the hell are you talking about” asked Clara stunned. What Clara didn’t know was in the three days she had been unconscious, the gossip wagon had taken off like a NASA rocket. The tale changing from person to person till the rumor ended up something like this; Clara had unknowingly lead an assassin to the King’s office, once inside the Assassin pounced, wrestling Aiden to the floor with a dragger poised to stab him the heart. In the meantime, Clara had stabbed the assassin with a letter opener. The assassin had crumbled, giving the king the chance to kick the assassin off and beat the shit out of him. Suddenly, the assassin turns out to be an ill-breather and fills the office with poison gas and begins his assault again. The king bravely fights off the assassin, blind in the thick mist. In the meantime, the defenseless helot breaks the windows; allowing the office to air out, before pathetically collapsing, overcome by the poison. Aiden knowing he couldn’t possible win in the poisonous environment, smartly retreats to the window, and since he’s a man of honor, Aiden rescues the poor helot. The king valiantly scales the side of the castle, where the wind is unusually strong and his body is starting to fail him! The assassin returns, and epic fight breaks out as the two combatants struggle on the side of the castle! In the end the greatness of King Aiden tops and the assassin is sent plummeting to his painful end. With the last of his epic strength the king pulls not only himself but the helot as well, to the safety of the roof. But the poison the king has breathe in, is taking its effect, slowly killing beloved King Aiden, till…. And then the tales splits off into many different spins. In either case, Clara is the one that rescues the king form death.
“I think you planned the whole thing!” yelled Belinda “You despicable little viper, you just want to gain favor with the King and then destroy him! We won’t let you! We’re going to make sure your infection of the empire stops here and now!” proclaimed Belinda, the other five maids nodding in agreement.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa! You guys got it all wrong here!” frantically proclaimed Clara, backing up from the crazed assembly.
Triple shit on a stick! These crazy bitches are going to kill me!
“Get her!” screamed Belinda and the maid charged forward.
Clara didn’t get far, by the time the human turned her back to the maids, the lot of them descended upon Clara like wolves on an elk. Clara crashed hard on the unmerciful stone floor. Clara was assaulted with punches, kicks, and scratches from manicured nails. There was no hope of escape, so with flight out of the question, all that was left was fight.
Clara couldn’t see anything, but she blindly reached out for anything. Adrenaline was coursing through her vein, affectively dulling the pain the Kakonia females were inflicting upon her. Suddenly! Clara’s hands came into contract with hair, and Clara attached to it, yanking with all her might. A pained scream erupted threw the hallway.
“You little…Gah…bitch! Let go!” screamed Belinda, her long brown hair ensnared in Clara’s death grip.
Hells no, bitch! Was Clara’s unheard response to the demand.
Clara yanked harder, successfully making Belinda miss her target (Clara’s head). The fist of fury did however; hit another maid, knotting her off Clara.
“Belinda!” exclaimed an angry maid, her nose bloodied from the punch.
“Sorry…” started Belinda but the apology turned into an ear splitting scream as a large chunk of hair came free from Belinda’s head.
The other girls stopped their messy assault to watch in horror as blood seep down Belinda’s face. Clara, for her part, peeked up to assess the situation. The red head saw stunned girls, Belinda touching the side of her head in horror, and a wad of brown hair was clutched in Clara’s hand.
“You…you…” stuttered Belinda, all rational thought was leaving the maid.
“Oh shit” uttered Clara.
“Maggot! I’m…going to…KILL YOU!” roared Belinda, thrusting forward. Clara closed her eyes and waited for her life to end…but nothing happened.
What?
Clara opened her eyes to see that Belinda was frozen a few inches away from her. The maid’s eyes were wide in fear, and Clara couldn’t blame her. The rest of Belinda’s hair was in the grip of someone else; the captured hair forced the brunette to tilt her head backwards, exposing her neck. In addition, a point of a blade was beside Belinda’s neck.
“I don’t think you’ll be killing anyone, little girl”
Clara looked to see the imposing figure of one Capitan Tawny of the Priestesses, standing behind Belinda with the maid’s hair in one hand, and a sword in the other.
Oh thank god!
Clara let lose the breath she had been holding. Likewise, Tawny dropped Belinda and sheathed her sword. With a flip of her short black hair, the Kakonia Capitan addressed the party, “Would anyone like to share what’s going on. From all the screaming I thought someone was being raped” growled Tawny, she face contorted in displeasure.
“We…we were teaching this filthy helot a lesson” said one of the maids.
“Yeah, she…she…is a rat here” added another.
“LOOK WHAT SHE DID TO ME!” wailed Belinda, touching the bald spot near the front of her head.
“I see…” drawled Tawny, hands on her hips.
“I DEMAND THAT LITTLE BEAST BE PUT TO DEATH! That helot dared harm a superior being!” spat Belinda, glaring draggers at Clara.
“Whoa! Hold the phone! I was minding my own business, when this crazy bitch and her friends ganged up on me! Sprouting out bullshit that I have no idea about” defended Clara, regaining her wit.
“You lying serpent, you tried planned the assassin to gain favor!” Screamed Belinda.
“Did not you crazy bitch!” yelled Clara back.
“Alright enough!” barked Tawny, huffing in irritation. “Belinda you stupid cow, the red head had nothing to do with the assassin, the whole thing has been overly exaggerated”
Clara was glad that Tawny was siding with her.
Belinda, for her part, shook in rage; she; Of course, she knew that the stinking helot had nothing to do with the assassin. However, the filthy human still had won too much mercy from his highness. And whatever part the human played in the incident, the bottom line was that the human was going to gain attention from Aiden. Belinda had clawed tooth and nail to gain the King’s attention, and she in hell wasn’t about to let a dirty, disgusting, human out shine her.
“That helot still attacked me!” reminded Belinda, desperate to get some blame on the human.
“That helot is no longer a helot. She is surf of the king, therefore his property” announced Tawny.
Wow, word travels fast, thought Clara. Wait…property!
“For you to harm her, means that you are damaging property of his highness, that…oh I don’t know…can warrant a death sentence” said Tawny, a smirk on her face.
“But, but…” stammered Belinda. “She’s just a human, there is no way you could side with this dirty creature!” exclaimed the maid.
“I side with his majesty. The human has gained his interest, so deal with it. Now, out of my sight, all of you” barked Tawny, making a few of the girls flinch.
“You can’t be defending this…thing!” Belinda spat. Tawny merely waved her off, like she was a dog.
It wasn’t the smartest thing Belinda ever did, but the brunette couldn’t stop her next words. “Typical…” growled Belinda, her form shaking.
“Come again?” asked Tawny.
“Only a dirty mixed blood would defend a hum…” Belinda didn’t finish her statement, as the maid was sent flying over Clara’s head, by a vicious kick from Tawny.
Dark eyes turned to coal, as muscles tightened. A few of the other girls squealed in fright of the furious priestess. “YOU DARE INSULT ME!” roared Tawny. Clara could swear the hallway shook from the booming voice.
Belinda was groaning in pain, trying to crawl to her feet. However, she was quickly brought down, as Tawny’s foot crashed upon her back.
Clara looked on with a mix of horror and awe.
When…when did she move, thought Clara, I could swear she was in front of me a moment ago.
“Remember your place, girl! I am your superior a thousand times over” growled the dark woman. “Next time your tongue wiggles in insolence, make no mistake I’ll cut it out! Now does anyone else want to defy my orders?” asked Tawny, a mad grin etched on her face. “Didn’t think so; All of you clear out. Oh! And take lady slut-a-lot with you” spat Tawny, kicking the maid again. Belinda crashed into the scared shitless girls.
The other girls wasted no time in falling over each other to get away. The crumbled Belinda was gathered up and carried away. The hall was soon empty.
“Hah! That was bloody excellent. Damn bitch for insulting me” barked Tawny with laughter. “Hey you okay, Clara?” asked the black clad woman, lowing herself down to Clara’s level.
Even with the adrenaline flushing out of her blood and the pain of the beating catching up, Clara managed to say one thing.
“Tawny…you…you are so badass”
