Running in the Rain

---------------------------------------------

The truck came to a complete stop inches from Leolin's fallen face as he squealed. Donovan was allowed to exhale as his lips trembled.
“WHAT THE FOCK ARE YA DOIN'! GET THE FOCK OUTTA THE ROAD...dumbass kids!” He didn't even apologize as he scrambled to grab Leolin off the pavement, his whole form shaking. The blood in his system had run cold as another shot whizzed passed his cheek. He didn't hear anything after a short moment as they ran off the busy street and into a crowd. Leolin was crying behind him. His cheek was cut from the flying spray of bullets, his knees were scrapped. Donovan did not check the damage from his fall. There was no fucking time!
The teenagers ran for their lives, not checking if the crowd scattered or not, if the bullets hit people or missed. It was like running from a mass of well trained attack dogs. Donovan looked over and pulled Leolin close and ducked down in a group of tall people. It was in hopes that their tracks were covered, at least for a small time.
It worked. A bus came, and they quickly boarded. Donovan paid both of their ways in, gripping onto the sniffling, scared brother of his. They found seats towards the middle and sat. Thank God for buses. He gazed out the window as some of the guys stopped following and trailing the moving vehicle. Leolin was whimpering beside him. People were not even looking. At all. In his town, no one cared or questioned what happened to them. It was too much trouble to.
All the teenager could do is hug his sibling. “It's all right...promise.” He rocked Leolin, never mind his own body was shaking and his own heart was beating ninety miles a minute. It didn't matter, nope...now was the time to try and assess damage. Leolin was sucking on his thumb, shaking mercilessly over almost getting hit and shot at. His cheek was streaming with small droplets of blood and tears. Donovan sighed and tugged on his long sleeve to wipe it all away, pressing as hard as he could on the bleeding scratch.
“S-See? We're m-makin' it.” He wanted to break down and cry, himself. Donovan knew it shouldn't happen, not with Leolin like this. Leolin launched himself into the other's arms, trembling. Comfort was the only thing to be given at the moment. That was in the form of a rocking hug as he checked his brother's knees. Only light skins. It wasn't a big deal. Pushing the thoughts of death and almost tasting his eminent doom, Donovan ran his fingers through his brother's hair.
If they stayed on the bus as long as they could, it would mean a safe trip. Aquarius wasn't stupid enough to try anything on a public transport, right? If they were, it'd actually affirm them as terrorists or a hate group. Not a bad plan, stay fucking put for now.
It didn't take long for both brothers to relax, just holding each other. Leolin looked abused with all the bruises on his skin and then the cut. Donovan must have not appeared much better. Some women on the bus were stealing glances at them, trying to discern what to do. Don could tell it by their facial expressions. They were as safe as they could be, for now.
The bus kept going, making periodical stops within reason. The brothers stayed put. Donovan noted that they were deep in the city, somewhere. He was fairly sure it was a bad part of town. And of course, to make the matters worse, it started to rain again. Down on the streets umbrellas appeared as people walked about.
Leolin was starting to whimper beside him again. It was the sound of water, it had to be. At midday, right on time, the driver of the bus announced the last stop was coming up.
“Ya gotta be strong for me,okay? We're going out in the rain. Just hold my hand....we'll get through this. I promise.” Donovan was soothing enough to make Leolin nod in agreement as the final doors slid open. “C'mon.”
Gathering themselves, they head out into the world. It was starting to pour down, hard. Leoling squeaked and sobbed, gasping for air. At least it was a normal reaction from him. Donovan could do nothing but worry. He was looking in all directions on the less crowded streets of...where ever they were. It was unfamiliar in the rain. The world seemed colder, it was hell.
Keeping their heads down as much as possible, the twins walked on with Donovan in the lead. They needed to get to a subway, train, somewhere! Not just wander the streets like sitting ducks. Rosencroft was probably having a fit by now! There would be contracts signed to get them both with anyone he saw fit.
This was gonna be a manhunt. Donovan walked a little faster with the news of that hanging over his head. Leolin was trying his best to keep up, toddling behind. Fuck if only that call hadn't been made...Elliot would still be at his damned house with his damned family. Not coming home early. Poor Boomer...
“Boom...fuck.” He was thinking outloud. He hoped the old man was still alive. Donovan had to apologize for being a douche bag. Looking over, there it was, a nice...greasy diner. Somewhere where...could they get food? Leolin whimpered again. He must've been hungry too. Making sure he was safe, Donovan darted in, dragging his twin with him.
A very busty woman gave them their menus when they sat down. “How can I help you gentlemen today?” Her smile was disarming...Donovan just leaned back.
“Jus' two burgers, and drinks to go.”
“Comin' right up, sweeties.” Leolin blushed at the nickname. Donovan could only chuckle. The smells from places like these were a wonder. It was a mix of grease, food, and cigarette smoke. It was awesome. The smoke actually calmed his nerves. Leolin sniffed the air as a few moments rolled by and the waitress came back with it all in boxes and bags.
“Here's everything, sweetheart. You two look like you've had a hard time...it's on the house.” She winked at Leolin while handing Donovan the bags.
“Th-Thanks...uh...” Don reached in his pocket and pulled out a ten. “Here...it's all right, jus' keep it.” She giggled and kissed his cheek and shooed them out the door with the food. Maybe looking battered was a way to get an advantage. He gripped Leolin's hand and lead them further down the street. The clouds were dark and rolling by this point. The rain wouldn't stop.
Hunger was setting in, the food was probably getting cold. Spying a bench, he snagged it and tugged Leolin into it. “Eat quick, we gotta keep goin'.” He handed his brother the burger, both mouths chowing down like no tomorrow. Fear makes the appetite that much greater. Maybe it was all the adrenaline. Ah hell, who the fuck cared, it was a damn good burger.
It didn't take them long to devour the warm food and chug down the Cokes set aside for them. That waitress was so nice. Too bad Donovan didn't look at her face, he was too busy staring at her chest. Frowning at the bad weather, he got Leolin to his feet without a sound and started pulling him along again. The wind was picking up. It cut right through his coat. His twin shivered and kept following. Both of them sniffled as they walked against the blowing air. What a fucking day...
It was unclear how long they walked, just that there was now a voice behind them whispering that their position. Leolin heard it and gasped and darted ahead of Don's path, voice a loud warning of what was behind them. Donovan sped up and ran on equal terms with his brother. Trees! There were trees ahead! Central Park! They could lose the asshole there!
Footsteps were behind them as they ran for what seemed like hours, for their lives, for their freedom into the largest park of the city. They could get away there. Or so they thought.
Running along, without stopping, both brothers wound up in the middle of the gigantic green place. No one seemed to follow.
“A...Ah....on....”
“Yeah...yeah I know....” They both panted, stopping in a group of bushes to rest. This game of cat and mouse was hell. And Donovan didn't draw his gun once, not once. Leolin was scared, whimpering as he caught his breath. Running footsteps round the corner, close their hiding spot on the jogging trail. Donovan yanked his twin down to they couldn't be seen.
“No sir, I lost them...yes sir, I understand.” The idiot sounded afraid. “I'm in the park, sir. I don't see them just yet. We have others scouting the area.” The conversation trailed on as the man ran off. Fuck...others. This was going to be one helluva walk in the park.
Looking to see if the guy had gone, Donovan ushered his blind brother out of the brush and down another way. Just to escape. The middle huh? Well...cut through the side, maybe? A bullet whizzed by his face. Wrong. Leolin squeaked and started to run ahead, tugging his twin with him. Panic gripped them both, yet again, as they headed out of a group of trees. If they had just stayed put!
Donovan was now kicking himself as he dove into another set of bushes. Voices were all around them, they didn't see where the two went. Where these guys blind or something?
“Where the hell are they!?” Guess so. Boomer didn't train these retards, that's for sure. Remembering the gun, he drew it. Waiting. The mouse just decided to make himself more dangerous in this chase with the cat.
Aiming, Donovan flipped the safety off and shot at the man not more than one hundred feet away. Direct hit. It alerted all of them together to check. Again he waited, Leolin covering his ears with his hands, wincing without making a sound. He waited for the opportune moment to stand up and shoot each one. There were only four. It wasn't hard. They didn't have time to draw. Donovan was the best fucking shot in the business.
The cops would be there soon enough, time to split. He grabbed onto his brother's arm and bolted for the other side of the park. The rain never did cease. Both teenagers were soaked to the bone. Their clothes clung to their bodies and every now and then, Leolin would sneeze. They had to seek shelter. Somewhere.
The sun was starting to go down and the city lights grew brighter. There had to be somewhere to hide out for at least a little while. Ducking out onto the streets, once more, he saw it...down an alleyway, a stairwell. It was dry. That would be as good as anything else. That was for damn sure.
“C'mon, this way...we gotta find somewhere dry...” Leolin just followed, shivering. The concrete steps led into some old business warehouse of some sort. No one was there, it looked like. No bum was either, thank the fucking LORD! It was theirs for the time being.
Huddling up, he hugged his brother as both shivered. “Th-this wasn't s-supposed to happen like this...honest. I-If we get to the train depots now...they'd catch us.” Leolin mewled and curled up closer, sucking on his thumb. His eyes closed, Donovan's didn't. He had to watch, he had to listen...he had to keep his hand near his gun as the rain stormed down over the top of them.
Every small sound made his trigger finger itch. Every little noise made the teenager jerk. They had to be looking for them. Elliot would want his pet back. He'd want to hit his pet and abuse him. Donovan couldn't fucking have that. He didn't want to wish that on his brother.
The hours crawled by like years. It was horrible. It was stupid...all this over two fucking runaways. Like they'd do anything BUT hide. He needed a damn cigarette and he knew all of his were soaked.
“Fuck...” He couldn't hear voices or footsteps or anything dealing with Aquarius. It worried him. What if they were lurking around the corner? Or what if they were almost there...right at them? The panic of the unknown gripped Donovan hard. And so, that grip affected his hands on the handle of the gun.
The rain wasn't easing and the night lighting was glowing. Leolin's body shivered so close to him. Why'd he do this? Why in the HELL did he put him and his brother through this? He leaned back against the abandoned door, padlocked closed and closed his eyes. Those eyes, without sight, full of tears...that's why. That had to be why.
Relaxing just enough so he could rest his eyes, Donovan sat there. He was in the state of half consciousness and half dreams. Those faces were moving in and out of his line of vision again, the people...those poor people. His heart beat sped up as a fitful dream started to seep into his sleep cycle. Ghastly screams and calls from both men and women started once again.
“Well, well...what is this, huh?” That one sounded real...it sounded. Leolin gasped and squealed, Donovan heard that. As well as the shake for his twin to wake up. Shooting his eyes open, the teenager was face to face with someone else he knew. Another guy from the same set of bunks as him...Frank. Fuck.
“Get tha hell outta my face!” Donovan drew his gun, still half asleep, kicking the fucker back. Frank had his drawn as well.
“Drop it, Donovan! Give up!”
“Fuck no! You get your ass outta here!”
“You betrayed us! I am NOT doing that!”
“Back the fuck up, I'll shoot!” Frank didn't back up as Donovan shot up to his feet. “You point that motherfuckin gun at him, I'll blow your head off!”
“You're the one being stupid about this, Lewis! Just hand him over, or I shoot him!” There was no way out of this one. They were in a stalemate. A tall black haired man versus Donovan. Leolin hid behind his twin at a seconds notice as a bullet zoomed past them both.
“YOU BASTARD!” Without warning, he pulled the trigger on his gun, the last bullet. It hit dead center into Frank's skull. Donovan shook and took in air. Lowering the gun, he whimpered and fell to his knees. That guy had been nice to him all through his life...he just killed the man. He was reduced to tears as Leolin hugged his brother. Donovan barely felt it, he was going to be sick.
“We....we gotta get outta here...” Leolin actually helped his twin to his feet as they avoided the blood and mess and ran out into the streets once again. It was only to be rewarded with more than one fucking hound after them. Again, their feet pounded on the pavement in the rain. Leolin, at least, was keeping up better than ever before as the chase ran through the night.
