Sarah

Chapter 11: Sarah

As Nicholas was waiting for Vincent’s return, a knock sounded on the door and it opened. Sarah entered with a tray and walked over to where Nick was kneeling in the corner. They had become good friends during the last month of his captivity, and he cherished what little time they were able to spend together.

“Oh, Nicholas, why do you continue to torture yourself in this way!” she exclaimed, “If you would only learn to comply with Vincent’s wishes instead of antagonizing him all the time like you do, then your life would be so much easier.”

Nick looked up from his position on the floor, and replied in a sarcastic tone. “Well then, I guess I must be a masochist, right?"

Sarah looked sadly at him. Nicholas was still so young. Only three months ago, he had turned 23 and fate had decided to intervene and drastically changed his life forever. She sighed, put down the tray on the table that was in the room, then walked over to him.

Vincent had been delayed due to the meeting he was attending and would probably not return until the next evening. Before leaving, he had put Sarah in charge of Nick while he was gone.

“Nicholas, look at me and listen very carefully.” she implored.

He looked up into her brown eyes and she spoke to him. “Vincent has instructed me to release you from your bonds and see to your injuries.” Continuing, “I want you to behave, and not try to escape again, or he will punish both of us severely.” Waiting for her words to sink, Sarah continued. “I will not release you until I have your word that you will not try anything stupid, do you understand?” she questioned Nick.

“Sarah, I may not care what happens to myself but I would never jeopardize your life. You are my only friend in this place and have done so much for me already.” he assured her.

Sarah smiled at him and then pulled a set of keys out of her pocket to unlock the chains binding Nick.

He slowly stood up, smiled at her, then proceeded to rub his aching wrists. “Thank you, Sarah.”

“Come, lie face down on the bed and I will attend to your injuries.” She told him.

Nick followed her over to the bed, and crawled up on it, lying gratefully down on the soft mattress. He could hear her getting the supplies she needed off the tray, then felt her applying the ointment and salve to his abused rear.

“Sarah, how well do you know Vincent?” Nick asked her as she continued working on him.

“I have known him for 10 years.” she answered. “I came here as a young girl. My family had been killed in a freak train wreck and I had nowhere else to go."

"He was very kind and concerned about my welfare. He took me into his home when no one else would. If it wasn’t for Vincent, I would have been living on the streets since I was too old for the orphanage.”

Sarah went on talking as she worked on Nick, “Vincent was looking for a Healer and I was learned in the field due to the fact both my parents were medical doctors.” She cleaned up the rest of his wounds, “He was a very private man, living alone, a recluse really.” Sarah finished and told Nick he could sit up.

He carefully pulled himself into a sitting position on the bed. Testing to be sure he would be able to sit on his rear comfortably, then pulled up and crossed his legs so that he could rest his arms and lean his chin against them as he listened to Sarah talk. She put all the supplies back together on the tray and sat down on the end of the bed next to Nick.

“After I started living here, he told me he would be leaving for awhile and then left. He moved to the United States and I hadn‘t seen or heard from him until he returned just over a month ago with you. He wasn’t content to live with someone for any length of time, so one day he informed me he was leaving but allowed me to stay here.” Sarah went on,

“He had been living in total isolation for so long, not having any contact with anyone, and it was like he was punishing himself.” Her eyes started to water, “I tried to get close to him many times, to comfort him, but he just wouldn't accept allowing anyone to get near him in that way.”

Sarah looked into Nick’s eyes saying, “Yes, I know what he is. It frightened me at first, but he has never given me reason to believe that he would harm me in anyway. I totally trust him. After all Vincent has done for me, I would gladly give my life for him.”

Nick was deep in thought. Vincent was an enigma and he wanted to know all he could about him. There was a saying, “know your enemy as well as you know yourself” and he was determined to know all he could about his Tormentor and Captor.

“Sarah, if you are able, I would like to know more about him.” Nick pleaded eagerly, “If you are not comfortable telling me, then don’t. I sincerely don’t want you to get into trouble.”

“What do you want to know?” she asked.

“Whatever you can tell me about him, where he came from, who his family was, how he was turned.” He continued, “I guess just about everything that you know.”

Sarah sat there deep in thought, she knew Vincent wouldn’t like this but felt that Nick had a right to know so he could hopefully accept his fate. If it would help him, she would confide what she knew. She only hoped that she wasn’t making the biggest mistake of her life and live to regret it.

“Very well Nick, I will tell you what I know. Get comfortable and listen carefully, I will not repeat myself. If you have any questions, I will answer them as best I can after I have finished.”

Nick nodded his head and waited for her to start.
