~The Inner Streets of Sanc~

The narrow alleyway seemed to vibrate with the yelling that accompanied the three as they ran from the soldiers who had persuaded them from the Waxing Moon.

~Heavy silence washed though The Raven Arise as the fifteen guardsmen walked into the common room. The pepper haired leader’s tired eyes washing over the assembly with disgust before narrowing at the three standing in front of him obviously trying to leave.

“Sir, take your hood off right now,” the guardsman demanded sharply as he reached for the heavy fabric concealing the face of the figure before him.

A gasp of pain broke the silence along with a sharp crack.

The smallest and slightest of the three had moved. A gloved hand had shot out of the cloaks heavy folds and was now holding the lead guardsman’s newly broken wrist.

“Do not dare to touch him you Anvarian dog!” came a soft feminine voice that was laced with venom.

After that, chaos had broken out as almost everyone in the room had either tried to make a run for it or pull out a weapon.~

The close darkness gave the group some cover, but they still felt terribly exposed.

Their beautifully woven cloaks seemed to have lost the abilities that had made them so very valuable in the first place. They could not just freeze and melt back in to the shadows as they might once have done.

None of the three had ever been in this part of Sanc before, it had been built well after the alliance began to crumble and the Andine withdrew their help with the completion of the city. These narrow paths strewn with everyday filth were a far cry from anything they were use to.

Turning down another tiny street, Airis slammed to a sudden halt, turned and pushed his people into the deeper darkness that was a narrow slit between two crumbling houses. Like a living cloak the darkness engulfed them, admitting then to hide from their pursuers as they jogged past the three. They were safe for the time being, nothing but three dark shadows in the depth of the night.

When the footsteps of the guard were nothing more then a far off echo did the three dare breath again.
Their harsh breathe and the thundering tempo that was their beating hearts broke the silence of the night and seemed deafening to their sharp ears.

It had been a very long time since any of them had been forced to flee for their lives. It had been a long time since they had done anything.

Sliding his back against the grimy wall, Airis glanced out at the dim street. In the light cast from the moon his eyes glinted metallically, lost was the searing green of their true colour.

“Airis?” whispered a delicate voice behind him.

Pulling back from the opening, Airis turned and looked questioningly towards the smallest figure that was Kailisto. Even in the darkness he could see wisps of her long golden hair shimmering within the confines of the hood. “What is it?” His voice betraying none of the anger he currently felt towards his head guard. If she had not caused that seen back at the inn they would not be running for their lives.

“My lord, this is not wise and you know it as well as I. Illyria has disobeyed a direct order from the High Council itself. She should be left to the fate she has chosen for herself.” Her voice was soft, but held a razor-sharp edge that all the guards possessed.

In the years he had known her, he had hardly ever heard her speak in such a manner, especially to him. But he was not particularly surprised. She had never liked Illyria.

“And what would you have us do?” he asked harshly. “If we leave her, she might be found and captured, and if that happened they would know there were still some of us left. They would begin to hunt us as they did all those years ago. You know what they would do to her. You know what they are capable of doing to her.” His voice was soft and level as he said the last, but you could not escape the anger in it.

Pushing her hood back a fraction, Kailisto shot her lord a condescending look that instantly infuriated him, “Do you honestly think that Falkai would let that happen to her?”

In the dim light she could see his eyes begin to glow softly in anger at the mention of that man. The deep emerald paling to a golden-green like new spring grass.
There had been little to no wind earlier, but now it churned and howled around them, catching their clothing and making them fly. His anger reflected in the sharp blows it dealt them.

Since they had received the council’s missive about Illyria’s escape almost three months ago, Airis’ temper had been short to put it mildly. That was until they were told that the council had sent word north to Fenrir.
To Airis, Fenrir meant only one thing: Falkai.
Hate was too kind a word, when it came to Airis feelings towards the head of Illyria’s personal guard.

“My lord, I have had enough of your temper tantrums!” Kailisto finally snapped, “Your actions of late have been akin to those of a spoilt child and I am sick of it!” Large pale blue eyes glared up at the much younger Andine as she pulled back a dainty hand and slapped him hard.

“Your actions since you heard of Falkai’s reinstatement have been totally out of order and I will not have us captured in this heaven’s forsaken city!” Walking out into the alleyway, Kailisto whirled around on a booted heel and threw back her hood. Her elfin face was framed by lush curls the colour of gold, the majority of the heavy mass was confined within a interlocking series of bejewelled bands so it would not get in the way.

Pushing back the cloak, she exposed the sword strapped to her waist, “Your aunt, heavens grant her peace, charged me with your safety, and I will not risk all three of us for one insane pyromaniac and her equally mad pet!”

The wind died as suddenly as it had risen.

Stepping out into the alleyway, Airis looked across at his tiny guard with mixed emotions. Most of what she had said had left him feeling empty, but bringing up Narsail had been a low blow. She knew exactly how much Narsail had meant not just to him, but everyone who had met the kind woman.
He could not fault her though, as much as he might want to and she had every right to hit him. He had been such a bastard the last couple of weeks.
It had been a long time since he had been scolded by an elder and he could not hide his embarrassment from either of his guards, but that was exactly what Kailisto had been after.

Green eyes locked with palest blue before Airis looked away from the intense stare, “I’m sorry Kailisto. Its just…”

“She’s all the family you have left,” the smaller blond finished for him.
