Chapter Twelve
The morning had been slow and uneventful, but she stayed occupied. Alex never stayed in the office long, allowing her to explore and take in her environment from the safety of Alex’s watch. Daniel had been extremely occupied all morning, barely pulling himself from his duties long enough to notice her exit and entrance.
“Kara.”
She pulled her gaze from the window, she hadn’t noticed until then that she had been staring.
“Why don’t you run downstairs and get your brother a coffee.”
Daniel pulled himself from his work and shot Alex a warning gaze.
“Okay.”
She made her way around the desk but was stopped at the door by Daniel’s soft but serious voice.
“Please watch yourself Kara.”
She smiled to him reassuringly as she left them, making the elevator before it closed. She found herself sharing the tin confinement with a large handcuffed man and an officer. She stayed near the far corner and tried to ignore the man’s stares. She rushed from the elevator as the doors opened, thankful for once to be met by the loud commotion that was growing back to what it was that morning. She looked around a moment, seeming very out of place and in the way as she was looking for the coffee maker.
“Kara Pikeman!”
Kara looked about her as she heard her name seeing Captain yelling for her from his office. As her gaze fell upon him he waved her over. She went to him quickly, not wanting to anger an already stressed man.
“My last name isn’t Pikeman sir.”
He raised an eyebrow at her as she shrank before him.
“Excuse me?”
“Daniel and my names are different. His is Pikeman, mine is Summers.”
He smiled at her boldness, relieving some of her previous worry.
“Please, come in, take a seat.”
Silence plagued the office as Alex stared at Daniel across from him.
“She’s a very beautiful girl, inside and out.”
Daniel sighed at him in frustration, never looking up from his work.
“I know, thanks for telling me my problem.”
Alex laughed at Daniel’s words, a sound that was like velvet, knowing they didn’t mean the venom they held.
“She really depends on you and comes about you. And you know, despite her meek personality, I get the feeling that she’s really strong.”
Daniel sighed again, still not bringing his gaze from his work.
“I know, she tries to be so strong all the time, she’s something else.”
“I think you need to tell her Daniel.”
Daniel stopped what he was doing and finally met Alex’s gaze. He stared a moment before sighing and shaking his head, lowering his chin until his hair hid his face from his friends eyes.
“I can’t.”
“Daniel she needs to know, almost as badly as you need to tell her.”
Daniel slammed his fists to his desk and stood, throwing his chair back in the process.
“Tell her so she can hate me and see me as the monster I am!”
Alex stared at him with a fatherly gaze; not saying a word knowing it was best that way. Daniel relaxed his body under Alex’s heated gaze and slowly sat back down, forcing himself to unclench his jaw.
“Do you honestly think she could possibly ever see you as a monster?”
Kara stepped inside the considerably large office of the Captain as he lightly closed the door behind him, removing the loud commotion of the first floor.
“Please Kara, take a seat.”
She complied to his request as he moved around his desk and took a seat in his fine leather computer chair.
“Now I would be very pleased if you would tell me why you were walking around my building unsupervised?”
She felt butterflies in her stomach as she thought quickly for the right answer.
“I’m sorry sir, Alex went to the bathroom and I wanted to get my brother and myself a coffee. I had noticed one down here earlier today.”
He studied her sternly a moment before his features softened.
“This place isn’t a playground, you can’t just wander around you could get hurt Kara.”
She lowered her gaze, seeing she had saved Alex from trouble. Now it was time to save herself.
“I know sir, I’m sorry.”
He sighed, softening before her again.
“Your brother…he’s very protective of you. If something were to happen to you he would never forgive me.”
Captain went from his desk to his door, opening it for her as she stood.
“The coffee maker cart is over there, get some and be on your way.”
She smiled and nodded to him as she exited, looking to where he pointed to find what she was looking for. He yelled after her as she went.
“And don’t let me catch you down here by yourself again!”
She was swallowed yet again by the noisy office as she poured two cups of coffee. She couldn’t mess up now, she told Captain she wanted two before and two she would pour. Maybe Alex would want one. Kara rushed with her drinks towards the elevator, taking note of Captain’s watchful gaze as she went. She made the elevator before it closed, alone thankfully this time. When the doors opened to the second floor she thought she had heard raised voices, when she walked into the office she was sure something had happened. The tension could have been cut with a knife as she set a coffee before Daniel and the other before Alex.
“Is everything alright?”
Daniel looked up and shot a heated gaze towards Alex, all play missing from his eyes.
“Lets go get some lunch Kara dear.”
Daniel set his pen down and pushed his chair out to get up.
“I’ll come too.”
Alex came swiftly around the desk and placed a light hand on Daniel’s shoulder.
“Nonsense, if you want to be home before seven you need to work through lunch. I’ll bring you back something.”
He winked as Daniel eased again and went back to work.
“Lets go dear.”
Kara left somewhat reluctantly, guided by Alex’s sure hand as he closed the door behind him.
A/N: short but sweet, and Alex makes an excellent point. Could Kara ever possibly see him as a monster? It's going to speed up here really soon and next chapter is the introduction of a fuzzy new character you'll all adore! until next time xoxoxox
