Sawdust

Sawdust. Absolute sawdust! That’s what her mouth tasted like all through supper. She didn’t say one word to Matt, not even a simple hello when she walked in. She couldn’t even look at him! Thank God Robert could keep a conversation going because, if not, that dinner would have been absolutely awkward.

Lucy tugged her into the kitchen as they both cleared the table. “What the hell is wrong with you?” Lucy asked, looking at her inquisitively.

Whenever Matt had tried to talk to her she had answered quickly, ending their conversation. Robert or Lucy had jumped in, starting on a new topic with their guest each time, however, everyone at the table obviously feeling a little awkward by Elizabeth’s behavior. Robert didn’t let that faze him though. When he realized Liz wouldn’t be changing her behavior any time soon, he turned the conversation to sports which had them talking throughout the rest of supper.

Groaning she placed her head in her hands, disbelieving of what just happened. “Luce, you know I’m a mess when it comes to this. If I actually like the guy then I can not, under any circumstances, talk to him.”

“Well that’s good to hear” Matt interrupted, stepping into the kitchen and placing two dirty glasses on the counter, “because I was almost certain I read you wrong out there.”

“Ok, well that would be my cue to leave.” Lucy, looked at Matt and smiled, quickly exiting from the kitchen and grabbing Robert on the way to their room. A little taken aback Robert just followed, knowing if he didn’t, a smack across his head was sure to follow.

Shocked, Liz didn’t know where to look except the floor. There was a dirty spot on one of the beige tiles she should get to later before it left a mark. She could feel her face turning beet red and all she could do was stare at the dirty tile.

“Look at me” Matt said quietly, leaning against the fridge. Liz, tried, with all the courage she could muster, to look at Matt. She made eye contact for exactly two seconds before her face dropped to the floor again.

“Please, try to look at me” Matt repeated in a gentle tone, making his way to Liz. He placed one hand under her chin and gently lifted her face to meet his eyes.

“I’m trying to understand you here, I really am, but you’re playing hot and cold with me. You were so outgoing and confident yesterday, and today you’re acting like you wish I wasn’t here. Please, just explain, I promise I won’t judge you.” Matt hand slid gently from below her chin to caress her cheek, tenderly stroking it. She felt like she would break down and cry. She didn’t know how to explain the way she acted.

“I…I don’t know how…” Liz started, dropping her gaze from Matt’s imploring blue eyes. She felt a tear slide down her cheek. ‘Why does this happen to me?’ she thought.
Matt sighed, bringing his hands down along the side of her body until his fingers entwined into hers. “Okay, you don’t have to tell me anything,” he said, leaning his forehead against hers, “all I have to know for know is if you want to spend time with me. That’s it. You do want to spend time with me right?” Matt looked at her questioningly.

That made Liz smile. Obviously she wanted to spent time with him! Oh wait, maybe not obviously… “Of course” she said, smiling, finally able to look up at Matt.

Breathing a little sigh of relief, he held onto her hands a little more tightly, “Whew, you had me a little worried there kiddo” he chuckled, then frowned when he saw her expression.

“I mean, Beautiful!” he quickly rectified, and she laughed openly at him.

“How did you know what was going through my mind?” She asked openly, a little surprised he was able to read her that well.

His hands caressed the softness of her skin as they traveled up her bare arms, “Your face is an open book. You show your emotions easily without putting on a mask. All it takes is for someone to notice.” He steadily leaned down laying a soft tentative kiss on her lips, leaving her breathless.

“Was that okay” he asked in a husky voice, breathing strongly.

“That was more than okay,” she said, looking deep into his eyes.

With a sense of sudden urgency, she wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him to her, deepening their kiss. Her tongue prodded against his lips, demanding entrance. Not wasting time, he opened his mouth to her hot tongue, encouraging her further.

His hands wrapped around her waist sliding low on her back, pressing his lower body into hers. He groaned deeply into her mouth, sucking on her lower lip. Her hands held onto his neck tightly, loving the feel of his hard strong body against hers.

His hands stroked her back gently even thought their kiss was strong and passionate, he didn’t want to push her into anything she wasn’t ready for.

Pulling back slightly to stare into her incredible eyes, he leaned forward to rest against her forehead, “Do you want me to go?” he asked, praying her answer would lead him to her bedroom.

“No” she said boldly, guiding his mouth back to hers.
