Sitting on my bed, my nervousness is causing me to tap my fingers and shift around. Zach is already here and keeps looking over at me, curiosity apparent on his face. We’re waiting for Charlie to get here before I talk to them. There is a knock on the door and Zach jumps up to open the door for Charlie. He sits down on Zach’s bed and Zach goes back to his desk chair. Both turn to look at me expectantly and I almost lose my courage.
I have a few things to tell you guys. I never told you because it’s hard for me to talk about but I talked about it somewhat in art class today and I figured that you guys deserve more honesty than I gave to complete strangers. Zach, you asked me about who ‘he’ was that my parents were referring to when they were here. ‘He’ is Liam Reynolds. He was the only boyfriend I’ve ever had. We met in middle school and he learned ASL just for me so that he could talk to me easier. (At this point I’m smiling remembering how surprised I was the first time he ever signed anything to me) We started dating in freshman year of high school. We planned on going to school together and living together during college. I was accepted into the School of Art in Chicago which is really, really good for an art major. Liam was good enough to get into an Ivy League school but that’s not what he wanted to. It was his parents plan. He wanted to do marketing stuff so he decided to go to Columbia College Chicago and live with me. His parents were pissed. It was just after Winter Break our senior year of high school when he and I were in a car accident. His parents were yelling at him again because he was throwing his life away for some brat, which would be me. He came to pick me up so we could go to the movies. On our way there, we were hit by a drunk driver. The man hit directly on Liam’s door. Liam died on the way to the hospital but I walked away with a few scratches to my face. His parents still blame me for his death because they wouldn’t have been arguing if I hadn’t been involved. Some days I still blame myself because they’re right, if hadn’t of been around, he would still be alive. This time last year, I went home to visit his grave. That’s why I didn’t go home during break because I was planning on going home this weekend to visit Liam. I can’t go now because my parents can’t afford it. They came out here after I was attacked and that took up the money for the trip. So that’s what I never told you guys. I thought you guys deserved to know because my art class found out about Liam being dead through my art. It’s over there if you want to look at it.
I point over to the sketch pad and both Charlie and Zach go to look at it. I still haven’t looked up at them to see their reactions so I was very surprised when both of them hug me.
“Thank you for telling us. And it wasn’t your fault baby. In no way was it your fault.” I start to cry just thinking about how much I miss Liam. It hurts so much that I can’t go see him. After a few minutes of hugging, Charlie stands.
“I’ll be back in just a second. Can I borrow one of your keys so I can get back in?” Zach hands Charlie his key and Charlie walks out. Zach maneuvers himself to the top of the bed, pulls my pillow over his lap and I lay down on it. I’m now on the hiccupping stage of crying; past the actual tears but still recovering from them. I’m starting to fall asleep to Zach’s petting when Charlie comes back in the room. “I’ve some good news. I never told you guys, but I’m pretty well off. My parents are going to cover the airfare so that you can go visit Liam.” Charlie is smiling and for a second I’m sure I’m asleep and dreaming.
Are you serious?
“Yes.”
It’s too much. I don’t want to tax your parents.
“It’s not. It’s fine. I told them some of your story and the whole heartedly allowed me to use the money. Please say you’ll let me do this for you.”
Yes. Oh God thank you. I stand and go to Charlie. I mouth thank you and keep doing it as I hug him. I need to buy this man a plaque with the word “Savior” written on it.
