Chapter Eleven
Kara woke as Daniel stroked her cheek with his fingers. He was sitting on the side of the bed, smiling at her as she slowly pulled out of dreams of her brother. He had been near her in every one, holding her and protecting her from the darkness and loneliness surrounding them. A light groan, almost inaudible slid from her lips as she sighed heavily.
“I have to go to work Kara.”
She was instantly away, blinking away the sleep in her eyes as she sat up. A look of hurt and pity flew across Daniel’s surface but she didn’t care, she didn’t want him to go.
“Why so early?”
He smiled at her, laughing slightly as he placed a reassuring hand under her lowered chin.
“Do you want to come with me, or do you want to sleep?”
She pulled herself completely up now, crossing her legs and shaking off the urge to yawn. She didn’t want to be left there, and she was curious of where he worked. She smiled to him as she noticed his eyes scan her a moment. She realized then that she was wearing a nightshirt and red panties. Blushing a little she pulled her shirt down to cover her undergarments and smiled to him again.
“Yeah I’ll come with you.”
He nodded and left her as she stretched, remembrance of what had been fluttering in her foggy mind last night came to her. She laughed at herself as she stood and walked towards the door, realizing she was in Daniel’s room. She had been so silly, he couldn’t care for her like that, and it was stupid of her to tickle a fancy that would never come true. She paused a moment and bit her lip before she opened the door, what just ran across the surface of her mind? Was she letting herself in on a secret she had hidden from herself? She shook her head, not now; Daniel had to get to work. She hurried down the hall and into her room.
She glanced at herself in the mirror, her hair was a mess, but she was clean from the shower she had last night. She pulled out a lime green bandana from her dresser and tied it around her head, hiding the fact that her hair was a mess from sleeping on it wet. She then put on a black bra and some black panties. She found a form fitting green shirt with a silver sparkle outline of a four-leaf clover on it. And pulled on her favorite pair of low rider Mudd jeans. She looked herself over, noticing that a small portion of her midriff was showing but she didn’t care. She rolled on her deodorant, careful not to get any on her shirt and sprayed a light touch of her favorite body spray on before digging out a pair of green flip flops as a final touch. She giggled at herself as she went to leave her room, she was definitely green today.
Daniel was sitting on the couch, clothed in his nice shirt and tie again with his shoes already on and ready to go. He stood as she came down the hall and looked her up and down again like he had in his bedroom, but with little emotion shown in his features. She sighed, how could she have mistaken that for lust?
“Ready to go?”
She nodded as he followed her out and locked the door behind them. In the elevator she noticed the clean smell of his aftershave, and the Old Spice body wash he used that morning. His long dark hear was combed back nicely but not in a greasy or gelled way. He noticed her gaze from the corner of his eye and she turned away, finding more interest in her shoes than his features. She bit her bottom lip out of habit as a slight blush found her cheeks.
The car ride was uneventful; all that was on that morning was radio talk, so no belting out their favorite songs that morning. Instead she gazed out the window and watched the people and buildings they passed by. They were coming to a poorer part of town. She was pulled from her thoughts however as Daniel pulled over and parked near a coffee shop. He took the keys from the ignition and smiled at her reassuringly when she shot a questioning look in his direction.
“I’ll be right back, just getting breakfast.”
She relaxed a little as he left her in the car, but she did throw a few uneasy glances at men passing, in not-too-outstanding outfits. He was gone maybe five nervous minutes before he returned, smile still on his face and handed her a steaming cup of coffee and a blueberry muffin on a napkin. She took the offered food and drink happily and took a hefty bite of the muffin before she realized how hungry she felt. She chewed contently until the muffin had disappeared and the coffee was resting warmly in her stomach. She was feeling more awake now, either from the caffeine or the food or both it didn’t matter. She glanced at Daniel, as he seemed to stare at nothing before him, it wasn’t long before the silent Cadillac parked outside a tall brick building. It didn’t seem labeled but Kara guessed it as his department by the cop cars out front and the uniformed officers moving in and out the double glass doors. He turned the car off and took the keys from the ignition before sighing and looking to her.
“Ready?”
“Yeah.”
She smiled to him reassuringly but he seemed unconvinced.
“Listen this place is busy in the mornings until it clears out and the cops go on patrol so just stay close okay.”
She swallowed and nodded, a bit hesitantly this time.
“Okay.”
He chuckled at her as he undid his seatbelt and seemed to make himself more comfortable than ready to go.
“You’ll meet my partner today. I think you’ll like him, he’s a character.”
She giggled at him as she undid her seatbelt as well turning to face him better in her seat.
“How is he a character?”
He laughed a little and scratched the back of his neck hesitantly.
“Well I’m sure he’ll tell you eventually anyway, but he’s gay for one thing, and has a very…unique personality. You’ll see.”
He opened his door at the last part and stepped out onto the sidewalk, Kara followed suit, although a bit more nervously. She wasn’t used to that type of busy environment, but at the same time at least she wouldn’t be alone. Daniel opened the door for her and guided her inside, nodding hello’s to his friends as he did so. She bit her bottom lip as she entered the bustling building. Men and women in uniform stood haphazardly everywhere, signing papers, getting walkie talkies, or heading out the door to patrol. Those who weren’t in uniforms sat at messy desks of papers and computers working hard already that morning and keying information into the database. Offices lined the walls, all had large windows to see into each one but most had shades drawn closed for privacy. Phones were ringing like crazy around the office as Daniel guided her gently through the office scene to an elevator.
The second floor was much more peaceful, not exactly silent but seemingly more organized. Gray cubicle walls now separated the desks, but the offices were still to every side of the room. The phones rang noisily here too but no one in uniform was present, only those dressed like Daniel was, with badges and guns at their hips. He led her to an office on the far side of the floor and she was thankful for once to be distanced from the bustle and noises of life. There were two desks in the center of the room, both facing each other while several filing cabinets took siege to the corners. In the desk facing the door sat the most beautiful man Kara had ever seen. His long raven hair fell freely across his shoulders and down his back, only emphasizing more his creamy pale features of his face and throat. He was hard build, and more muscular than Daniel was, and looked older than him too. His deep green pools stared at her as he smiled to her with perfect pink lips.
“So this must be sister Kara I’ve heard so much about.”
Even his voice was beautiful, like silk sliding over a blade.
“Kara this is Alex.”
He stood eloquently and glided over to her, taking her hand and bowing to kiss her skin gently.
“Pleasure to meet you.”
She blushed and looked to Daniel who now had a hand to his forehead and was shaking his head at his partner. Alex straightened and glanced to his friend with a chuckle.
“What? Just practicing my manners, you never know when a courtly night is needed in a play.”
Daniel only laughed at him, and Kara joined in once she realized Alex had been playing.
“Sometimes I wonder if you really are gay Alex.”
Alex winked at him and went back to his work at his desk, a playful dark look in his eyes.
“If you weren’t straight you wouldn’t have that doubt my friend.”
Daniel shook off his friend’s playful advances and took a seat at his desk, leaving Kara standing and feeling awkward that the only other available chair was near a cabinet behind Alex’s desk. He looked to her and pulled the chair closer to the corner of his desk and patted the seat.
“You can sit dear, I won’t bite. I’m sorry that your loving brother didn’t offer you a seat he’s a bit behind in his work.”
She worked her way around the small office to the chair and took a refreshing seat as Daniel shot Alex a ‘thanks jerk’ glare before going back to work.
“I suppose that’s my fault isn’t it?”
Alex chuckled at her slightly as he lit a cigarette. Alex shot him another evil glare as he watched his friend take an enthusiastic drag.
“You mind not smoking that around me I’m trying to quit.”
Kara’s mind paid attention to detail as she remembered him smoking when he picked her up from the train station, she hadn’t recalled him lighting up since.
“It’s not your fault dear that he fell behind, he was just so preoccupied with getting you settled he neglected several urgent days of work.”
She blushed a little at his accusation, he said it wasn’t her fault and then turned around and said it was in a way. She shook it off as his ‘character’ Daniel had warned her about. And he had one indeed; once you think you know his personality he changes it. She studied him as he looked at information on his computer, his long slender fingers working magic over they keyboard. They were the fingers of a musician. She glanced away again when he turned towards her in his spin chair.
“Want to come with me dear? I’m going downstairs with some papers and I’m sure you don’t want to stay in this cramped office.”
She glanced to Daniel for an answer to his question but he didn’t even look at her, he really was in depth in his work. She looked to him and answered for herself for once.
“Sure.”
He led her to the elevator her and Daniel had used that morning down to the first floor again. But once the doors opened she was met with a much calmer office than before. Most of the officers had left and all that bombarded her now were ringing phones and shouting computer keyers. A few people she noted with caution, several men hand cuffed to their chairs as officers stood guard over them. One winked at her as she walked by and she hurried her pace to hide herself behind Alex. He noticed her behavior and put a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
“It’s okay, they can’t do anything here.”
“Hey Harmenn! Is that our witness we’ve been waiting for all morning?”
A short and fat middle-aged man yelled to them from across the floor. He approached them hurriedly as Kara pulled just a little closer to her escort.
“No Captain this is Daniel Pikeman’s sister Kara.”
The man looked disgruntled at Alex’s words and his face turned red as he finally came within normal speaking range.
“This isn’t fucking ‘bring your family to work’ day. Keep her out of trouble Danes.”
Alex nodded as the man moved on to another person to harass. She followed closely until they stopped at a corner office and handed off the papers to a younger man on the phone. He didn’t ask any questions, just waved him a thank you as they made their way back to the elevator. Once inside it’s quieter confines Alex spoke to her.
“Don’t worry about Captain he’s a bit stressed these days. His wife is leaving him.”
Kara nodded to him in quiet understanding as they exited the elevator, back on the quieter floor and back to the cramped office; Daniel hadn’t budged an inch.
Alex took his seat again and gave Kara a careful gaze as she took her seat back as well. He did his work mindlessly, it wasn’t much to check records and run them to the lower floor. It had been all deskwork for Alex and Daniel for two weeks now; Captain said that’s where they were needed at the moment. As he studied her, sitting on her own and obviously roaming in her own mind, he noticed that she really was a sad girl; skittish even. He decided he would take her out for lunch that day, just him and her, maybe then he could judge her a little better.
