Story Notes: This story contains characters that were first introduced in "Fate". However, it is not really necessary to have read "Fate" to understand this story. In fact, you may like Victor better if you haven't read "Fate". As for those of you who have read "Fate"? No, Shayne and Lexi will not be showing up in this fic. Maybe in later stories (Victor has a long back story), but not this one. Also, I have a general outline for this story, but everything isn't set in stone yet. Just like with "Perceived Perceptions", I'm sure that some things will not go as planned. So, the warning lable above is just a general guide, I really don't know for sure where this fic will go. Just a warning, if you're squicky about some stuff (don't worry, there won't be beastiality or scat or anything too extreme) then read the warnings at the start of each chapter. However, I know from experiance, that most of my regular readers can handle anything that I throw at them, so I'm not too worried about any of you. Either way, I hope you enjoy the fic...
Somewhere In Between
Chapter Eleven: A Plan Forms
"So, how was it?"
Victor looked up at the sound of a familiar voice, turning from the low wall that he had been leaning on, taking his gaze off of the far off landscapes and looking instead at his best friend. Caspian was wearing a dark blue velvet suit, a short jacket and calf length pants that clung to his body like a second skin, the color matching his eyes perfectly. The clothes themselves, however, were not the cause of the sudden smile that graced the younger vampire's face. No, it was the fact that, without any knowledge of what the other was planning, they had somehow managed to wear outfits that were identical save for the length of their coats. Even the hand carved silver buttons were the same! It made Victor wonder if those who said that he and Caspian were soul mates weren't right after all. The matching smile on Caspian's face told him that the other man was thinking something along the same lines. Victor could only imagine the rumors that their accidentaly synchronized attire would fuel.
"How was what?" With one last amused look at Caspian Victor finally answered him, knowing full well what his friend wanted to know and not in the least inclined to give it to him. Not without a fight, anyway. It just wouldn't be any fun. "I had rather a long night, very eventful in fact, so I am not entirely certain of what you're referring to."
"Oh, I don't know... how about your feeding?" Caspian knew Victor too well to get pulled in by his act. "Or did something more exciting happen that I should be asking about?"
"The feed was fine." Victor didn't answer the other question, although the twinkling in Caspian's eyes told him that he most likely didn't need to. "Tamara was delicious. I don't know how I went all these years without the real thing."
"Poor baby." Caspian said with mock sympathy, leaning against the wall just as Victor had been moments ago, looking out at the seemingly endless landscape stories below them. "Do you know that I wasn't sure that you'd make it to your coming of age? Horrible stuff, that bottled crap. I'm so glad that I haven't had to touch it for ages, it makes me appreciate the fact that I was able to switch to the real thing at such a young age. I really was quite lucky in a way."
"Really?" Victor feigned interest, letting Caspian have his moment, knowing full well that it was retribution for not answering his friend's questions more directly. "You don't say."
"Why, if it were me, I think I might have put a stake through my own heart if I were forced to endure twenty-two years of cold blood."
"I am so glad that you feel my pain." Victor deadpanned. "You are a truly caring friend."
Caspian nodded in complete agreement.
Teasing aside, the two friends fell into silence and spent the next several moments looking out at the greenery below them, and the town beyond that, enjoying the warm breeze that blew across their skin and ruffled their hair. Then, when he couldn't hold back any longer, Caspian asked the question that he'd wanted an answer to since the previous night.
"So, how was he?"
"How was who?" It was Victor's turn to mock his friend. "I'm afraid that you will have to be a little bit more specific."
"You know damn well what I'm talking about." Caspian grumbled. "How was your night with North? I've always wanted to know how he was in bed. Seems like he'd be quite the animal."
"Is that what you think?" Victor replied innocently.
"Yes, that's what I think."
Victor couldn't help himself, and he laughed out loud before answering. "He was great. I had a lot of fun."
"He didn't-"
The newly serious tone in the other vampire's voice made Victor cut him off before he could ask his next question. "If you're going to ask if he hurt me then I'm going to have to hurt you." Victor warned. "I'm not a delicate little virgin, and I wasn't before last night either, so don't you dare imply that I was."
"I wasn't going to say anything of the sort." Caspian lied, spreading his hands wide an a sign of surrender. "I was just going to ask if he shifted during any point last night. I heard that some lycanthropes like that sort of stuff."
"No you weren't." Victor knew when Caspian was being less than truthful with him, but he let it go because he knew his friend's heart had been in the right place, even if his pride wouldn't allow him to entertain his question. "But that's not important. I've got a question for you."
"What sort of question?"
"Do you remember when we were younger and there was that crazy old werefox who lived down by the ravine?"
"The one who used to sing at the top of his lungs, completely off key, whenever a vampire came anywhere near him?"
Victor nodded.
"The one who wore that hideous old lizard-pelt cape and smelled like three week old meat gone to rot?"
Again, Victor nodded.
"The one who eventually swallowed a couple of pounds of silver buckshot and then fell on an enchanted blade?"
"Yes." Victor answered, already having heard more remembrances than he had expected. He had thought it a rather simple question when he'd asked it. "That's the one, Cass."
"Nope, don't remember him at all."
Victor had the distinct urge to throttle his smaller companion, and it was with great strength that he restrained himself, instead choosing to ignore his last comment completely. He was pleased to hear only a slight growl in his voice to gave him away when he spoke again. "Do you remember that song that he always used to sing?"
"Vaguely." Caspian wasn't pleased that Victor had refused his bate, and he pouted ever so slightly while he answered Victor's question. "It was years ago. And besides, I can't say that I'm in the habit of committing the ramblings of lunatics to memory."
"He used to sing about the great saviour of the realm." Victor provided. His brows were furrowed in concentration, and he seemed to be trying very hard to remember something that simply wouldn't come. "I can not seem to remember what the last line was. I do, however, remember something about The Unifier."
"The unifier?" Caspian's interest piqued, and he remembered not something from years ago, but something that he had heard only days earlier. "One of my dad's business associates was saying something about a unifier the other day. I didn't catch all of their conversation, but he did seem kind of excited about it, whatever it is." He had assumed that it had something to do with his father's business, but now that Victor was asking about it Caspian was forced to rethink that conclusion. "Why do you want to talk about this all of a sudden?"
"Last night, when I was with Tamara, she called me the unifier."
"You?" Caspian's voice spoke of his surprise. "What did she say, exactly?"
Victor was very glad that he wasn't prone to blushing when he answered Caspian's questions. "She said that she couldn't believe she was the one to bring the Kokkonor into his manhood."
"Kokkonor?"
"I asked Lorcan about it after Sorrel got pissed at the both of us, and at first he said it was just a legend, but then he told me that the Kokkonor is a term that the humans use to refer to the unifier."
"But did he tell you why... Tamara?" Caspian assumed that was the name of the woman that Victor had fed from. Suddenly, his friend's first feeding didn't seem nearly as interesting as their current conversation. "Why she would call you the Kokkonor?"
"He told me that he did not know much about the lore of the unifier, but he promised to find out what he could, and then there were some problems with Lass and Sorrel interrupted us and I didn't get to ask any more questions." Victor still hadn't forgiven Sorrel for her evasiveness, and his face was momentarily twisted into a scowl as he thought about her. It took effort to push the anger away and concentrate on the present conversation. "That doesn't really matter right now, though. What sort of man was this friend of your father's?"
"I wouldn't exactly call him a friend." Caspian corrected. "He's some fellerian from the Seventh Realm. He was bringing my father a new batch of humans from the Human Realm. Must have taken a whole damn village, because there were at least three dozen, and that's after he'd taken his pick and gotten rid of the undesirables."
"Isn't it dangerous to take an entire village all at once." Victor had to wonder. "I would think that it raises suspicions."
"I'm sure they have a way of explaining it." Caspian shrugged it off. He'd long ago accepted that his father was a slaver, and that it was a necessity in their realm, because without a good supply of humans to keep their towns populated his own people would suffer and starve. It was simply the way that it was. If the humans back in their homelands were left with questions it wasn't his problem. "I read a book that my uncle brought me once from back there, and it talked about being spirited away, so maybe that's what they all think when a village disappears. How should I know?"
"Not like they could do much about it anyway." Victor reasoned. "Even if they knew that a daemon was coming to take them away there wouldn't really be anything that they could do about it."
"I suppose you're right." Caspian agreed. It was as good an answer as any. "You're getting sidetracked, by the way."
"So I am."
"Anyway," Caspian continued. Victor had always been the curious type, and conversations with him often went off track, so why should this be any different? "The fellerian was asking Father about whether or not the unifier had shown himself yet. My dad seemed not to want to talk about it, but the fellerian kept pushing. They were actually arguing when my mother called us all to dinner." Then, with a sly smile and a sideways glance at his friend, Caspian added, "Although, I'm sure my mother's cooking wasn't nearly as tasty as the meal that you were enjoying last night."
"I don't know." Victor answered, fully aware that Caspian was once again fishing for details. "I have tasted your mom's roast and it really is quite delicious."
Caspian was forced to concede on that point.
"Do you know if the fellerian is still around?" Victor was never one to pass up a good source of information. Not if it could be helped. A look at his friend's darkly calculating eyes told him that Caspian was thinking the same thing.
"Want me to have a little talk with him?" Caspian offered. "I'm sure that I could find some way of persuading him to share what he knows with us."
Victor knew that tone of voice. Caspian was going to talk to the fellerian rather he asked him to or not. Who was Victor to stand in the way of his friend's desires? "Sure, that would be great."
"Glad I can be of assistance."
A sudden noise behind them made both men turn as one, obsidian and sapphire locked on the shadows, twin snarls baring matching pairs of pearly fangs. Their moods may have been lighthearted only moments before, but neither Caspian nor Victor appreciated being spied upon. The fact that it might only have been a servant come to deliver a message never even crossed their minds. When the breeze brought with it a sudden knowledge of their unwanted audience and both vampires knew that they had been correct to be defensive.
"Talfryn, you can stop skulking around in the shadows." Victor let the tension ease out of him, knowing that aggression was never the best way to deal with the nobleman. In fact, he had learned years ago that behaving as though the other vampire was of no concern at all tended to anger Talfryn to no end. Something that never ceased to make Victor smile.
"If you wanted to play with us all you had to do was ask." There were few things that Caspian enjoyed more than aggravating Sorrel's only son. It was something that he excelled at. "You know we both positively crave your company."
Talfryn just snorted, not even willing to dignify the lie with a response. He took a moment to carefully look from one man to the other, looking for what they didn't know, before turning on his heal and disappearing in a flurry of dark leathers and storm grey curls. Victor and Caspian listened carefully as Talfryn's heals sounded down the old stone steps, taking him away from the height of the tower and down into the castle proper, before they burst into hearty pearls of laughter.
"What in the hells was that all about?" Caspian wondered, fighting for breath, palms planted firmly on his knees from where he had been forced in half by the strength of his good humor.
"I've no idea." Victor wiped a tear from the corner of his eye, still chuckling as he helped his friend stand up properly. "Probably just Talfryn being Talfryn."
"I'm sure you're right." It was the last thought that either man gave to the sorceress' son. They had other, more important, things to concentrate on. Victor had sources to round up and Caspian had a cat to seduce.

Wow! I haven’t commented on anything of yours in forever it seems, and I apologize a thousand times over. I have, by no means, stopped reading. Things have just caught up with me, and I hope you can forgive me. I’ll try my best from now on to keep up with my reviewing. Promise. ^^
Is okay. I hope everything's good for you now ^-^
That behind me, there’s so much great to comment on now, I don’t know where to start. I suppose I’ll start where I left off (or where I think I left off), with my reviews. The North/Victor scene. Not only does it make sense logically (since I never did get to comment on it), but I think it was one of my favorite parts so far. (Ok, so I have a lot of favorite parts, but we’ll ignore that for the time being… Phht.)
Thanks. I tried to have it fit into the story and not just be a lemon stuck in for effect. I just hope I can keep it that way for the rest of the fic.
As I’m sure I’ve mentioned numerous times before, North entices me to no end. No matter where you put him, what you do with him, or who you shove him in bed with, he is still the most undeniably sexy werewolf ever to roam the pages of fantasy literature. Awesome, awesome, awesome. Him and Caspian…I don’t think I’ll ever get enough of either.
I'm so glad that North is much loved. Thanks to your, and others like you, response he not only got more scenes in this fic, but he'll get his own someday. And to think that he didn't even have a backstory when I created him. Thanks for making me see the light.
You mentioned that you’ve never done a scene before where the two characters had nothing more real between them besides a friendship and a mutual desire for a having a good time, so I feel I should mention…I think you did a terrific job. North keeps up his teasing, Victor rightly defends himself, they both obviously want each other, and nothing goes much beyond that. Unlike some, I actually like the idea of two dominating personalities clashing. In this case, I think North was the clear victor (no pun intended), but I imagine Victor as he was at the very beginning of this story (with Blaine), or in “Fate”, and I wonder what a confrontation between the two men at that point would be like? I could see things going either way, and that sort of true competition could make things interesting. (Never gotten a chance to build up a story myself where two clear dominants actually fell for each other, but the subject interests me… I just have too much fun with pretty boys, I suppose.)
Thanks. Even though I've never done a fic with two doms as the romantic leads, I think I just might now. I thought it would be hard to do, and it wasn't exactly easy, but I like how it turned out and I want to do it again now. As for a "modern" confrontation between North and Victor? That would be interesting. I might just have to write that scene someday. Not that I'm sure who would end up on top. I just hope they wouldn't waste all of their energy fighting over who's on bottom *LOL*
Anyway, moving on… Again, you make me worry for poor Lennora. I just have this gut feeling that something terrible’s going to happen to her sooner or later. She’s just too gullible and innocent, and I don’t care how nice Sorrel can seem to them at times, I swear that woman is EVIL. All caps for a reason. Pure and utter malevolence. –snarl- And I worry for Lorcan too. He’s too meek; too goodhearted. Something bad’s going to happen. T_T
Worried for Lennora? *looks at you innocently* Now, why would you say something like that? And Sorrel? Would mommy dearest do something to hurt her little girl? Honestly, don't you trust me at all? Although, I will tell you that you should keep an eye on Lorcan, because there's more to him than meets the eye.
Ah! But then we have…hotlesbiansex! -Ahem- Blargh. Do I have to be a perverted straight male to tell you pulled it off wonderfully? I hope not… Cause I liked it. If nothing else, I think I glimpsed, for the first time, a soft spot in EVIL. I think she really has some honest feelings for that girl. But maybe it’s just that pretty blonde hair driving the wicked woman sane. O_o Regardless, I couldn’t help but grin when she snapped at Talfryn for telling her to ‘keep a tighter leash on her human’.
Nope, don't have to be a perverted straight male to say it was wonderful. I'm a (mostly) straight (only slightly) perverted female, and I wrote the damn thing. I'll say that, yes, Sorrel does have honest feelings for Mara. As for Talfryn, he needs to be snapped at more often. He's just too damn full of himself. I can't wait to take him down a notch one of these days.
Overall, very enjoyable. I look forward to the next chapter! ^^ (And I’ll be off to reply to “Pastimes” as soon as possible.)
