Chapter 12

Chapter 12~

“What?” Nydia asked, her voice a whisper. She was shaking and she knew it, but she couldn’t stop. All of the fear that she had pushed away came back in full force. This couldn’t be true, he was lying to her, he just had to be. But, as she looked into his eyes, she knew that he was telling her the truth.

“Your soul is made up of the essence of Earth.” Saxen repeated again. Nydia made an inarticulate noise and shook her head. “You need proof?” He asked and Nydia looked up at him, startled. She nodded and he stood, walking to where she was. He crouched down beside her and picked up the cloth that still held the berries.

He let the cloth open in his hand. The small pile of berries resting in his palm. “These berries, do not grow in this area.” Nydia’s eyes widened and she opened her mouth to speak but he cut her off. “They grow near your village, but not here. You can call the trees and plants, ask things to grow. And, if you listen, you can hear their voices. Haven’t you heard whispering voices that only you can hear before? When you are afraid, or when you are calm, or just before you fall asleep?”

Nydia closed her eyes and shook her head, trying to deny it. But she had heard the voices, she remembered them. When she had stood in the rain near the forest, when she had run away from Guthrie, and when Saxen had carried her away from Guthrie’s men. Yes, she had heard them, but how had he known? How did he know what she was?

As if he was reading her mind he answered her silent question. “Your power is not controlled, Nydia. It flows freely throughout your body, and when you touch another it flows through them as well, for a brief moment. Only those who also have an essence inside of them can feel it.” Saxen held up a hand and cupped her cheek. “When I carried you that night, and I touched your skin, I could hear the voices of the trees as well. Your power flowed through my body and I could hear them too. Do you remember what they said?”

“Yes.” Nydia answered, her eyes brimming with tears. This was to much, she was being overwhelmed by this new knowledge. “Our gentle human daughter will be safe now. She is with the one who speaks with wolves.” She said in a whisper, the tears in her eyes spillingn hen her cheeks.

Compassion filled Saxen, and he was startled, for he was not aware he could feel this emotion. He gently brushed her tears away and spoke softly. “I know how you must feel.” Nydia made a soft noise and he gently brushed the hair away from her face before speaking again. “It is overwhelming to find out that you hold an essence inside of you. But, it does not change anything, it just makes you more aware.”

He was right, she knew he was right, but she was still ad. Hd. He knew what she was feeling, he had felt it himself once. He could help her. He could help her control her power, she needed him to help her. Nydia clutched his shirt and rested her head on his shoulder. “I’m frightened.” She whispered, breathing his comforting scent in. He smelled slightly of sweat and grass and of the smoke from the fire.

“I know.” He said, rubbing her back soothingly. “There is more to the tale, but it is not for me to tell tonight. Not until you are ready to hear it.” Nydia sighed and then nodded, silently telling him that when the time came she would listen. “There is a town half a day’s walk from here. We should reach it before nightfall tomorrow, and we will stay there for a few days. If you need anything tell me and I will try to get it.”

“How about a hot bath?” Nydia murmured and Saxen chuckled. The sound surprised her because she had never heard him laugh before. It was a nice sound, she decided. It was nothing like the cold sound of Guthrie’s laugh, Saxen’s was a warm, comforting sound. He was slowly helping her accept what he had told her. “Thank you.” she whispered.

“Sleep.” Saxen murmured. He picked her up and moved her closer to the fire for warmth. He was about to walk away when her hand shot up and grasped his hand. He looked down at her slightly surprised, though he did not show it.

“Don’t leave me.” She pleaded, tugging slightly on his hand. Saxen looked at her for a moment before nodding. He lowered himself to the ground next to her, close but not touching. Nydia curled up next to him, moving slightly so she could rest her head on his chest. She fell asleep that way, and she dreamed

~*~*~*~*~
Nydia stood in the middle of a ring of trees; she was naked and her hair was loose and hanging down her back. Whispering voices filled the air around her and she looked around, and saw no one else in the ring of trees. “ome ome daughter. We have been waiting for you.”

It was then that Nydia knew who was speaking to her. The trees were talking to her, welcoming her. To Nydia it almost felt like coming home. “Why have you chosen me?” She asked, “Why am I the one you call daughter?” She fleetingly realized that she was speaking in the language of the trees, but that thought was pushed aside as soon as it had come.

“You have been chosen because of your strength of mind, Daughter. You need to have a strong mind for what you need to do.”

“What is it that I need to do?”

“That will be revealed in time Daughter, but it is not for you to know now.” They said, and Nydia nodded. “Now we need to know of your traveling companion.”

“His name is Saxen, he was the one who told me of the essence inside of me.” Nydia said, forgetting her nakedness in her excitement with talking to the trees around her.

“The Wolf Brother? Yes, we know of him. He is strong in mind as well, and he knows many things. Stay close to him Daughter, he will be able to protect you while you learn how to control your powers.”

“Yes, I will. I will stay close to him.” Nydia said, “I feel safe when he is near.”

“That is good Daughter, very good, but not enough. You will need to trust him completely if he is to help you.” The whispered voices said.

“I do trust him.” Nydia said, turning around to look at all the trees around her. “I do trust him very much.”

“It is still not enough Daughter. It is not enough.”

“Then what must I do? How can I trust him more than I already do?”

“We must not influence your actions by telling you the answer. You must heed out word Daughter, trust us as you trust him. We know it is hard when you know so little about who you are trusting, but you must.”

“I will, I will try.” Nydia said, right before the her surroundings went blurry.

Everything became clear again seconds later, and Nydia found herself in the middle of a dense forest. All the trees around her had lush green leaves filling their branches, all but one. It’s branches were bare and looked almost black, like it had been burned. She stepped towards it and saw that it’s bark was charred, it had been burned, many years ago.

She didn’t know why she knew, she just did. Slowly she reached out and touched the lowest branch. She could feel her own power flowing through her fingertips and into the blackened bark of the tree. Something was changing she could feel it, and moments later the change was apparent. The old black bark was replaced by a healthy brown colored bark. Small buds formed on the reaching branches and turned into green leaves. The tree seemed to hum with new life as Nydia drew her hand away.

“Thank you Sister.”

Not Daughter, but Sister. Nydia smiled and laughed. She had done it, she didn’t know how she had done it, but she had. And, she had never felt so happy in her life. Nydia whished that this was not just a dream, that she could stay here forever. Suddenly she felt a presence behier aer and she turned.

A large wolf with black fur stood behind her, head cocked to one side as it studied her with it’s large golden eyes. Nydia smiled, “Saxen.” she whispered, as she prepared to wake from her dream. She needed to stay with Saxen.

AN: WHOO, it\'s 1:30 in the morning and I feel GREAT! YAY new chapter! okay, just to clear up any questions you might have, I did not do any reaserch concerning the creation of the earth or the essences. I made it up as I was writing, so any coralation with anything else not related to this story is a complete coincidence. But it would be pretty damn cool if it was all true... heehee

Antaris5- I\'m glad this story has captured your attention, and I\'ll try to update as oftern as posible so you can find something when you check back every day. ;-)

Hello Betty- Yeah, it was kinda long wasn\'t it. And it\'s probably a good thing you didn\'t expect the origins of creation to come into this because that means that this story isn\'t so predictable that you know the ending after reading the first four chapters... right?

zelix- I\'m glad you like, it makes me dance *dance dance dance* heehee. Oh, and just a side note... I saw that you\'re going to finish nnernner\' first. Happiness! I\'m glad I could give some imput to that little issue. :-)

cheesy poofs- um right... female power all the way. Am I correct in assuming that you have a wierd obsession with Cheetos? And Guthrie is not supposed to be hott! And, if you think he is I\'m sorry to tell you thbut but something\'s very wrong with you.
