2 months later….
James sighed out all the tense fear, anxiety and frustration that had been building in him most of his life. The hearing had gone very well; all three men were sentenced to more than forty years in jail without the possibility of parole. And Anita was facing five years. Sarah smiled at him as she stood, pulling him close for a strong hug.
“Are you ready to leave?”
He nodded as they left the courthouse together. The ride was short, but Sarah managed to fill the empty spaces.
“How has your tutor been doing? Do you enjoy the studies?”
He nodded as he stared out the window looking at the fine apartment buildings they passed.
“Amy is great, I can read at a fifth grade level now and I’m doing a little better at math, although multiplication still gives me some trouble.”
She smiled as they pulled up to his new apartment building. It was much finer than the one Daniel lived at. He waited a moment before getting out of the car.
“Sarah, I’m really sorry I never made it to Greg’s funeral.”
She waved his words away.
“Don’t worry about it; you had the trial and you were very upset over Danny. Greg died doing what he did best; I don’t think he would be sorry about it.”
James smiled at her as he closed her door and hopped up the steps of his new home. Now that everything was over, he could start his life, his real life. He already lined up a job at the local theater, and was looking forward to settling into his apartment. He took the elevator to the fifth floor and walked down the fine hall to room 405. He insisted that he have it, it was the room number and floor that Daniel and he had started their lives together two months earlier. He unlocked the door and let himself in, hanging up his coat on the coat rack before stretching and going to the kitchen. A turkey sandwich sounded really good. He went about getting himself a plate as warm hands reached around him, fingers exploring the skin under his shirt.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t make it today, the chief said I had to do my paperwork no matter what, and I wasn’t needed for the trial.”
James forgot about the plate and turned to face Daniel who pinned him against the counter. He wrapped his arms around his neck and kissed him softly.
“I guess I could forgive you.”
Daniel laughed, kissing the side of his neck as James sighed.
“How is your chest today?”
Daniel pulled him close.
“It’s alright; I’ve been doing better since I’ve started those breathing exercises. The bullet only grazed my heart but it collapsed my lung, which seems to be where I’m having problems.”
James nestled against his neck; the bullet that had almost killed his lover was in a small box in his dresser. He wondered if he should keep it, or would it be better to throw it away.
Daniel lifted him onto the counter and pulled off the boy’s shirt before removing his own. He kissed him deeply as he undid his jeans. James sighed, his head falling back as Daniel caressed his chest and stomach. Daniel undid his own jeans and ripped away the obstacles James wore, leaning him back on the counter.
“I missed you today.”
James moaned as Daniel slid himself into the boy. His body never ceased to amaze him as it writhed beneath him, turning that ever lovely shade of pink as he struck that sweet spot inside him again and again. James wrapped his legs around his waist and clawed at his stomach as they christened their new kitchen. This man who made love to him now almost died for him, he took a bullet for him and would do anything for him. James came hard as Daniel did the same deep inside him, filling him with warmth that seemed impossible. He pulled the boy up and kissed him again, resting his forehead against his as he panted. James was finally free, free to make his own decisions, to live his own life, and to love the man who had accepted him as a thing and loved him as a person.
