Chapter 10

I'm not sure if anyone's noticed this, or just decided to ignore it or something, but i made a mistake in chapter 2. In one paragraph, the one i was describing Angel, I said that his skin was yellow, and the next sentence, i said his skin was white. What i meant to write was that his *eyes* where yellow, not his skin

Cobraqueen: I try to update as much as i can, without hurrying myself, or else i'll mess up. I'm just glad i've got good ideas and good reviews to motivate me. :D

Avernion: Yep, Angel needed it, too. It's a good thing he's one of the immortals, or he'd have starved to death, and we can't have that, now, can we? And, it doesn't exactly /say/ that Damien's immortal. ;)

Thanks for the reviews! (As I have said probably every chapter.)

On the way to Vic’s office, Damien noticed Angel begin to get sluggish. Haley was right, he was tired.

“Come on, just a little while longer.” Damien prompted. From hearing his voice, Angel seemed to get a little livelier, but not by much.

It led Damien to think if Angel really couldn’t understand him. He could understand Kevin, right? Though, there have been cases where two communicated through thoughts, no matter what language the other spoke.

But then, why only the kid and not anyone else? That could’ve been because of the loss of energy though, but, he had energy now, so why was it still like this?

And with that, Damien was determined to get Kevin away from his mother, by force if necessary. He didn’t like the woman anyway.

Damien stepped into the office, noticing that the place looked as if a tornado had gone through it.

“Victor?” He called out, and saw the man step out from behind a large pile stacked books.

“I have some theories about what went after Angel.” The small man said energetically, and waved Damien over towards his desk, that had a large, old book opened on top of it.

“You’ve figured out what it was?” Damien asked, completely forgetting what he was originally there for.

“Yes, come here, and bring Angel. He might recognize it.” Damien pulled Angel over, who was looking at a snow globe on a shelf, that had a mermaid sitting on a rock, lyre in hand.

When he was pulled in front of the book, and saw the picture that Vic was pointing at, his grip on Damien’s arm got tighter, and grimaced.

“I’ll take that as a yes.” Vic said, going around the room, and picking up papers and other books.

“A… Siren?” Damien read the caption, and Vic nodded enthusiastically.

“Yes. Another of cousin of the mermaid. Much lore about them, most of it mistaking the two as the same. Greek mythology states it as having a bird’s body and woman’s head. Seductive and deadly. Don’t know why it would go after Angel though…” He trailed off in thought, before going around the room again, lifting stacks of papers and flipping through pages of books.

“Is that all you have?” Damien asked, getting a look from Vic.

“For now. Angel seems attached.” Vic stated, and the taller man sighed.

“So I’ve been told.” Damien remembered his original reason for being there. “John said you were going to get a place for Angel to sleep?”

Angel looked about dead on his feet already, and was starting to sway a little, his grip loosening then tightening again, and going through that cycle many times.

“He… never said anything…” Vic thought back, trying to remember, and shrugged. If he did, Vic was probably to entranced with his find to notice.

“Then where is he going to sleep? He won’t stop hanging onto me.” Damien sighed, not wanting to have to deal with this as well.

“Well-”

“Found anything out yet?” Hector walked into the room, cutting Vic off, who went into a frenzy telling Hector of his find.

“I’ve heard of those before. Led sailors to their death, right?” Hector said, remembering reading about it somewhere. Or maybe he watched it on TV when he was back home?

“Exactly!” Vic was ecstatic, and his face was getting red.

“Calm down, bud, you might break something.” Hector said with a grin, earning himself a glare.

“Don’t tell me to calm down. We know what it is, we know how to kill it,” Vic began flipping through another large book, and Hector sighed.

“I’m still waiting for an answer here.” Damien said after a few moments of silence. Vic looked up, glasses askew.

“Try and get Kevin, see if he can’t relay the message you want to get through to him.” After that, Vic shoed all the men out.

“Great. It seems I’m going to be stuck babysitting.” Damien sighed, though not really annoyed. Vic still hadn’t told him what to do with the merman, who was looking around interestingly again.

“I’ll go with you to the kid, see if we can’t convince the mom to let him out.” Hector said, already heading the way to the woman’s room.

Damien followed after him, making sure that Angel didn’t stop. Whether the merman was tired or not, he was extremely curious. Damien couldn’t hold it against the boy though. If he’d been in the merman’s situation, he’d be curious too.

“We’re here. You’re the representative, right? She should listen to you.” Hector said as he stopped in front of Mrs. Barlows door.

Damien knocked on the door, but got no answer. Something seemed a little off, but he just couldn’t put his finger on it.

“Has she already gone?” He asked, half hoping for a yes, and half a no.

“She shouldn’t be,” Hector replied, thoughtful, “She said she wasn’t leaving the room till the thing that attacked Angel was good and dead.”

“What’s you boys doing here?” A female voice called out, and the men turned around, to see Haley with cart of food.

“Looking for Mrs. Barlows,” Damien replied, “What about you?”

Haley cocked her head to the side. “Bringing the Mrs.‘s her dinner. ‘Parently she won’t take it from no one else. Not like I don’t have other things to do.” Haley grounded out, her usually smiling face transformed into a scowl.

“She won’t answer the door, she must not be here right now.” Hector stated, looking at Angel who was staring at the cart, his nose twitching.

“Might’ve finally got her butt out of the room and headed back home,” Haley suggested, yet just knowing that it wasn’t to be.

“We can only wish,” Hector muttered, getting a look from Haley. That’s not something he should say out loud.

“What do ya need her for, anyways?” She looked around, and saw Angel, giving him a large smile.

“Not her, her kid, Kevin. We can’t talk to Angel without him.” Hector stated, looking annoyed.

“Why’s that?” She wanted to know, and the big man just shook his head. He didn’t know.

“I think that’s as much as he’s capable of,” Damien said, getting a look from the other two.

“How do you know that?” Hector asked, eyebrow raised.

“I’m not a representative for nothing,” he answered, “It usually the case in something like this.”

“You mean there is more of his kind?” Haley cut in.

“Well, yeah. You think mermaids and sirens are the only thing out there?” Damien waited until they said no. “They’re just some of the more harder one’s to find. Most have gone extinct.”

“Why’s that?” It seemed to be Haley’s favorite questioned.

“They have to keep their numbers down, for one thing. Some species even lose the ability to procreate.”

“And you didn’t mention this to us before, because?” Hector was beginning to get angry.

“Didn’t think it was that important. Doesn’t really have anything to do with him, other than the fact that they’re supposed to be extinct.”

“So, we were pretty much sent on a wild goose chase?”

“Pretty much.” Angel was tugging at Damien’s sleeve, and was seeming to get mad at the lack of response from him.

“Angel want’s something.” Haley stated, and Damien looked down at the merman, who moved to stand in front of him.

“He probably just wants to go to sleep.” Damien waved him off, which only seem to make Angel more aggravated.

“Oh, don’t be mean to the poor boy,” Haley gave the man a disapproving look.

“It’d be better if I knew what the hell he wanted, or if he could understand me.” Damien brought them back to the original subject.

Angel tugged again, and Damien looked down.

“What?” He asked. Damien was getting annoyed. It wasn’t Angel’s fault, no, it was Mrs. Barlows that was pissing him off.

Even so, Angel was wanting something that Damien didn’t know how to give. Not until they got Kevin anyway.

“I really don’t know what you want.” It seemed Angel understood, to an extent, because he let go of Damien’s sleeve.

Angel stared at Damien for a moment, before grabbing hold of the collar of Damien’s shirt suddenly, surprising him.

He leaned down a little, going with the pull of the shirt, confused as hell as to what Angel was wanting.

Everyone found out though, when Angel pressed his lips against Damien’s.
