Lady of the Beasts
Chapter Ten:
Lady of the Beasts
~~~~~~~~~~~2 Years Later~~~~~~~~~~~
Coral leaped through the open spaces of the forest with the new generation of the pack, Luna and Kerosene were the alphas, Celeste was the long-lost beta and other wolves made up the pack. Coral was free and back home after all these years…years she was lost, she found her way back home.
It was there where Coral hunted the deer with Luna’s mate, Kerosene, tackling the deer. They tore it to bits. Though Coral was humanized, she got in touch with her lupine side that was long repressed after a course of years.
*Was it Skylight’s dying wish you led the pack?* Coral asked Luna.
*Very much so* Luna said to Coral. *We’ve missed you, Coral. You disappeared and things began to happen*
*Such as?* Coral yelped.
*Everything, Skylight and Ratio passed away, and so did Moonstone—no, she was killed by poachers. Celeste was captured and forced into a zoo over the course of 3 years. What happened to you? I never really got the chance to ask* Luna barked.
*I can’t really remember* Coral hissed, *It’s all a blur to me…but I remember I suffered an extreme sadness I never want to suffer again*
Otto came running up to Coral and went ahead to tackle her and licked her.
*Kerosene already had his fill, go ahead and eat Coral*
*I’m not really that hungry,* Coral barked.
Coral licked Otto and climbed up a tree to get a better view.
*Humans…* she gasped to herself. They were plowing through the bushes, holding long rifles and shooting birds out of the air. *Get away everyone, humans are a foot!*
Coral climbed down and charged at the poachers.
“Who are you and what are you doing here?” She screamed in human language.
“Who is this?”
“It is Lady of the Beasts,” the man said in fear.
Coral looked at them quizzically, “My name is—”
They pointed the gun at her but Coral gave them a quick jab in the stomach and tossed them down, pinning the man down. The second man tried to knock her with the butt of his gun but Coral dodged, instead, hitting the first man in the head. He was knocked out. Coral slashed at the man and bit his ass, driving both of them out the forest.
Coral, feeling quite proud of herself went back to the center of the forest to reunite with the pack.
*Those humans are very afraid of you*
*They called my Lady of the Beasts*
*Maybe it is good that they are afraid for once,* Luna barked. Coral hugged Luna and nuzzled her.
*It is good that I am here, with you, where I belong.*
As time pass, so do people. People who take hikes tell the story or legends about this mysterious, enigmatic beautiful but dangerous woman who lives in the depths of the forest.
An old man with his granddaughter walked up the crevices of the steep hills that surrounded the forest bend.
“Sarah, have I ever told you of the legend of the Lady of the Beasts?”
“No,” Sarah asked curiously, “What legend is that?”
“Hold up, I’m quite old…slow down,” the grandfather said, sitting on the rocks and patting his lap so Sarah could sit down on it.
“Tell me the story!” Sarah called out.
“A woman was abandoned by her parents many years ago and raised by wolves. But a bunch of people found her and took her back, they sold her to a bad place, where they hurt women, and then she was bought by a bad man who treated her like a slave. She built up the courage to escape and lived in the streets for many years, doing bad things to get food. She was taken in by a kind man who helped her and sent her to school. But everyday for many years she was abused at the school.”
“He tried to adjust her to human life. She became completely humanized, but then the man was shot and killed and she ran away. People say that she attacked a zookeeper and freed one of the wolves in the cages and escaped back into the forest with the help of the wolf leading her back into the forest. To this day, she lives in the forest, protecting many generations of packs.”
“But doesn’t she grow old?”
“I don’t believe so. She grows up, but she never grows old, as people say. She always retained her youthful muscular body, and her beauty. Some people who study wolves said she has been around for 8 generations of wolves. Her ‘sisters’ and ‘brothers,’ pass away, but she is still alive. She helps take care of the young and lead the pack in maturity.”
“Can she speak?”
“Well, at first, when she was in the wild, she was very feral...meaning, she couldn’t speak at all. She can speak human language after years of humanization. But I still wouldn’t approach her. She isn’t tame at all. She is a wild person—wild and free.”
“How many years has she been around?”
“Over 50 years I believe,” the old man said tiredly, “And she still looks young.”
“What were the bad things that people did,” Sarah asked.
“They used to abuse her,” the old man said, coughing into his handkerchief. “Many years of abuse and mistreatment made her distrustful of any human. That is why people take caution in approaching her.”
“Why?”
“From what people say—when she is well fed and well rested—she has the strength of two, very strong men. She is very fast and agile, her bones are supple and strong and she has sharp teeth and claws. She has taken the likeness of the wolves themselves.”
“Why do people consider her the forest guardian?”
“Because she knows what she has to do. She has the intelligence of a human, and the ferocity and nature of a wild animal. She had protected many generations of wolf packs.”
“Oh, wow, that is a great story…”
“It is very true,” the old man said with a grim smile.
“Wow, Grandpa Damian that is amazing!” Sarah said.
Damian gave another grim smile, “They say, if you listen closely, you can hear her howl—her howl is actually a tale of her life…and how hard it was.”
Damian and Sarah continued up the pathway on the steep hills.
A cold, chilling cry echoed in the night. It didn’t sound like a wolf. It didn’t sound like anything anyone as ever heard. It was responded by more wolves howling.
The moon shone over the forest, drowning it in silver moonlight.
If you look closely, you can see the shadow of a woman traveling with many wolves. And if you listen closely, you can hear her howl.
And that is how she was called, Lady of the Beasts.
