Chapter Ten
Kara woke again to hear the television still on. She sighed and sat up; it was six in the afternoon. She placed a palm to her forehead; her headache was gone as far as she could tell. And she was thankful for that. She got out of bed slowly, realizing she still had her clothes on from last night. She went to her dresser and found a white sleep shirt and a pair of red panties before moving towards her door. Daniel sat on the couch watching television, but his eyes flicked over to her as she walked down the hall to the bathroom. She wanted to shower before anything else, and she did just that, gingerly stripping off her new wardrobe and putting it into the hamper as she ran the water to the right temperature.
She stepped inside the stall and closed the sliding door quietly behind her, relishing in the feel of the warm water on her skin, washing away the sleep smell from her body. Her mind wandered to the club as she squeezed a decent amount of shampoo into her hands and began to lather her hair. Daniel had seemed so different last night; he was solely interested in her, even when there were other beautiful women right under his nose. He had looked but he didn’t hold that same gaze for them as he had her in Sparky’s. She furrowed her brow as she rinsed the shampoo from her hair and reached for the body wash. What exactly was in that stare? It was emblazoned, heated, stern, but not angry in any way. It was a stare that sent chills down her spine and wakened something deep within her being.
She lathered herself with the lavender body wash, remembering how her body had reacted when his hands had coursed over her, sliding over the most sensitive spots with such tenderness. Even in the shower she could feel the heat between her legs, and she washed herself away from her arousal with the body wash and the hot coursing water. It was wrong; she shouldn’t have thoughts about him like that. She shivered as she turned the water off; he wasn’t really her brother was he? They weren’t blood related. She shook her head and wiped the water away from her face a bit too harshly. It was wrong, all wrong; she shouldn’t have feelings like that for him. She stilled herself as she dropped the towel to the floor in her realization, did she have feelings for him? She stared at herself in the mirror, or maybe the question was if he had feelings for her?
She swallowed hard, but never pulled her gaze away from herself in the mirror. It would make sense, the way he sheltered her as a child, the way he reacted to her when she was dressed provocatively, how he touched her at the club, the way he gazed at her. Had she mistaken his looks of lust for looks of a loving brother? The wheels turned in her head as she asked herself these questions. What would happen if he did love her like she was beginning to think he did? Did she love him back? She felt a lump beginning to choke her as she pulled herself away from the mirror and pushed her rampant thoughts to the back of her mind. It was too much; she was running on a blind track to madness. She pulled on her long sleeved shirt, it was another man’s shirt that buttoned up the front, and slipped on her pretty red panties before she walked out of the bathroom and into the kitchen. Her previous suspicion rose in her when she felt his hot gaze course over her body when she passed him, disappearing quickly into the kitchen before she allowed herself to react to his gaze. She bit her lower lip as she grabbed a glass and filled it with water. Maybe she wasn’t overreacting, what if he really did love her like that?
A shocking revelation hit her as she took a short drink from her glass. Since she was a child she had never had any interest in boys except for Daniel. When they were together as children she never wished to leave his side, she never wanted to be without him. And now that they were older, things hadn’t changed. She hated it when he left the room or when he had to go to work. Did she love him more than a brother? She swallowed hard as she walked into the living room, cutting in front of the television and around the coffee table to take a seat right next to Daniel. She pulled her legs up to her chest as she leaned against him, his arm going around her slender shoulders as if he could read her mind. She rested her head against his shoulder and sighed contently, even if she did love him more than a brother they could never be together.
“I was beginning to wonder if you were going to sleep right through into tomorrow.”
She lifted her face to his with a smile on her lips; he glanced at those lips a moment before planting a light kiss on her forehead instead. She rested her head again against his shoulder, what was she trying to do? Kara was confusing herself like crazy now, did she want him to love her, was she even sure he felt that way about her? She decided to change the subject on her mind, to something else but not something less important to her. When her mother was diagnosed with cancer she had the feeling she wanted to tell her something important, but the time never came that her mother finally sat down with her and talked with her. The disease had spread too quickly, she died without getting a chance to even say goodbye. Kara swallowed the lump in her throat again and asked her nagging question.
“Was there anything about mom that she never told me Danny?”
She turned her face to him again, all seriousness in her eyes as he furrowed his brow at her. She had a feeling that he would know about something that she wouldn’t, her mother had always wanted to keep her in the dark about things that were very important. She felt it was a stupid trait of hers. Daniel turned the volume on the television down and sighed heavily, he did know something.
“Well there was one thing I could think of.”
Kara snuggled into his side, readying herself for a long explanation.
“What did Sara ever tell you about your father Jason, or rather, about when she left him?”
Kara thought a moment, her mother had never really said anything about him, in fact, she had been almost private about her past relationships.
“Nothing, ever.”
Daniel sighed as she turned her face up to him again, watching as he rubbed his eyes trying to find the right words for the situation. She could feel him tensing beside her; either with nervousness or annoyance she wasn’t sure which.
“Well, Lohan told me that Sara had cheated on Jason with him before you or I was born.”
He glanced down at her to see if there was any recollection on her face, she showed none, but nervously chewed her bottom lip. It was hurting him inside to tell her this, when the day came that he told her how he felt, this conversation would make things even harder.
“I was the result, but Jason and Sara raised me as their own or at least until you were born. I remember a big fight, and Lohan came over and took me away.”
A light shown in Kara’s eyes now, Sara had been his mother?
“Wait, you mean you weren’t Lohan’s son from another marriage?”
Daniel shook his head, pain shown in his dark eyes as she turned the thoughts in her mind. Why did he look so hurt?
“I didn’t see Sara for a long time, until she started dating my father again. That’s when I finally got to see you after so long. You weren’t a baby anymore.”
Kara chewed her bottom lip again, he had answered a few questions for her but rose more in her mind.
“Why didn’t mother ever tell me this?”
Daniel knew why, she was too young to tell her when Daniel had been with her; she had discovered his love for Kara and distanced her from him. She didn’t want Kara to think she had blood relation with him, that she had a right to see him.
“I don’t know, maybe the time was never right for such things.”
She looked up at him, but he didn’t meet her gaze, he was hurting inside as he stared at the television. The light played off his features in the dark room and soon Kara allowed herself to drink in the television as well. They stayed like that a while, relishing in each other’s company until Daniel yawned and stretched, stirring Kara from her resting place against him.
“I’m going to bed.”
He stood and made his way to the bathroom. Kara curled into herself on the couch, she hated being alone. She still wasn’t quite over that feeling of utter loneliness, and she fought over herself as she tried to decide to attempt sleep in her own bed that night. She listened to the toilet flush and the hamper lid slam as Daniel opened the door and turned the light off. She turned the television off hurriedly. Kara could see his shadowed outline as he walked towards his door.
“Danny.”
He stopped a minute by his doorframe, looking her way but she couldn’t tell his features.
“Is it alright…if…I…sleep with you tonight?”
She rushed the last of it together, afraid that she might push her welcome but he chuckled at her and nodded his head to her in the dark.
“Yeah, although I don’t expect you’ll get much sleep, you slept all day remember?”
She smiled as she walked down the hall towards him; he was wearing his boxers and nothing else as he closed his door behind her. She let him crawl into his covers first, noticing he favored the right side of the bed and left her plenty of room on the left. Her heart ached as he turned his back to the left, she didn’t want to sleep like that. She nervously slid into the right side of the bed, squeezing her way dangerously close to the edge, but pushing her closer to Daniel. He opened himself to her without hesitation, relinquishing some of the nervousness she had for not being wanted in his bed. She faced him, and buried her nose against his broad chest; her hands instinctively went to his chest as she rested against him, his right arm under her head and his left pulling her close to him as he scooted over to give her some room. That’s what she had wanted. She sighed as she relaxed against him, his warm and sweet scent surrounding her a she felt his heart beat under her hand.
Daniel found it surprisingly easy to control himself, despite the fact that his beautiful Kara was lying in his arms. She was so relaxed near him, so at ease, he wondered if it would really be so bad to tell her how he felt, if she would even care. He buried his nose in her soft hair and breathed in her scent and exhaled with a sigh. He had to go to work tomorrow, but he was going to surprise her. She would go with him, and meet his partner
Alex so he could get a judgment on how well she would take his news. He had a feeling she was going to like him. Daniel felt his body relaxing as his mind ran rampant, it wasn’t long before his breathing steadied and he drifted off to sleep.
Kara listened as Daniel’s breathing slowed and his heart rate dropped under her hand. He was asleep. She really didn’t feel all that tired but she closed her eyes and relished in being so near to someone else and not alone, not ever again.
A/N: And now she knows! *gasp* that and she's beginning to feel that Daniel is a bit more than a brother in her eyes. *another gasp* who saw that one coming? Not me. lol stay tuned for more adventures coming your way Thursday. haha I'm a poet and didn't even know it ta ta!
