Interlude

Interlude - A Week Later...

This chapter looks into the future and shows us what will happen in a week\'s time. I wrote it so that when we return to the current plot in the next chapter, we look upon it with a deeper understanding and hindsight. It gives us a hint that Michael and Storm may not live happily ever after... You can find out what happens to them in my very final chapter, so keep reading!

Michael sits nervously in the players\' box, his visor down. He grips his hockey stick tightly as a small bead of sweat rolls down his forehead. The team are 4-0 up with 5 minutes left on the clock, and the crowd are getting excited. People are leaning over the balcony rails, cheering and jumping up and down. The stadium buzzes. Michael hasn\'t played much this game, but he knows that he\'ll be on the next line. As soon as the coach gives the signal, he\'ll be ready to go... He can\'t stop thinking about Storm. Ever since that strange meeting and their electric first night together, they\'ve been inseparable. Michael has never met anyone like Storm before. She fascinates and satisfies and calms him like nobody else he has ever met. They haven\'t got much sleep this past week. They\'ve stayed up into the early hours almost every night, talking and making love. He can\'t get enough of her. At last he understands what people mean when they describe someone as \'the girl of my dreams.\' Storm is that girl. He never thought he was capable of this. He loves her so much it hurts. There\'s still so much to learn about each other, but already it feels as though they\'re destined to be together. Michael has never felt so happy.

Suddenly he is snapped out of his daydream as the coach nods in his direction. A rush of excitement pulses through him - it\'s time to go! He swings his legs over the side of the players\' box and jumps down onto the ice. He pushes forward in a fluid, graceful movement and accelerates quickly. God, it feels good to be skating again! He scans the ice for the puck. It\'s over behind the goal, and Ron and an opposing defenceman are shoved against the boards, fighting for it. It isn\'t long before Ron breaks free and quickly passes the puck to Michael. He hears the satisfying clunk of the puck hitting his stick, and the swish of skates on ice as the other team chase him. They skate fast, but Michael skates faster and breaks away. The puck seems glued to his stick. The crowd murmur and rise to their feet - they sense a fifth goal. Michael shuts out the noise and concentrates on the ice ahead. Only the goalie can stop him now! Michael skates as quickly as he can. When he reaches the goal he moves to once side and the goalie follows him. He quickly snaps to the other side and the goalie, confused, falls over and leaves an open goal. Michael flicks the puck into the top of the net - and the crowd goes wild! He skates in a large circle, his stick raised above his head in celebration. This is his first goal for a while, and it\'s a spectacular one. His team mates hug him vigorously and he feels on top of the world.

The stereo system kicks into action. The deep voice of the DJ rings out across the stadium. \"Goal scored by Number 19... Michael Tallis! Unassisted...\" Michael is almost crying with happiness - his love for Storm has heightened all his emotions. He grins as the stereo system blasts out \'Mambo Number 5\' for the team\'s fifth goal of the match.

\"This one\'s for you, Storm!\" Michael yells into the crowd. He\'s pretty sure nobody hears him, but shouting it nevertheless makes him feel good. He thinks of Storm, and how proud she will be at this very moment, watching from the stands... The stadium buzzes, but after a few minutes everything has calmed down enough to allow play to resume. Peter gets onto the puck and quickly passes to Martin, who slides it across to Ron. Ron sees yet another chance opening up in front of him, with only two minutes to go. The other team haven\'t pulled their goalie as they\'re too far behind, but Ron is skilful and he could still score again. He races towards the goal, but an opposing defenceman catches up with him. He checks Ron heavily, slamming him sideways and off-balance. In the scrap that follows, the puck flies into the air. It whistles like a bullet.

The next thing Michael knows, he is writhing on the ice and screaming in agony. A searing pain cuts through his temple, throbbing like a stab wound. He has never felt such pain in his life - it is all-consuming and overpowering. He screams once more and then the world spins. Everything goes black, and he feels no more.
