Goodbyes
A/N: This is a story I've been working on for at least two or three years now. I wasn't going to post it up but I decided to since its something I'm really proud of. I didn't forget about Victorian Dream, but there should be a chapter or two of it soon. So without anymore delay, enjoy.
This hills of a small and sleepy village were quiet. The winter night seemed to make the silence sound deafening. In the distance, snow crunched under the feet of two boys as they trekked up the quiet hills. Both stopped once they reached the top of the highest hill and stood next to each other, watching the moon in the sky. "Why do you think that we won't see each other again, Jascha?"one of the boys asked calmly. It was too dark to see his face, but if you look hard enough, they could see the tail of a Lupine sweeping the snow covered ground. The tail swished a few times on its own before intertwining with the Kingiros one near him. "I got drafted into the war, Nikolai. I might not be able to come home or in the worst case, die."the other boy, Jascha, said. His voice was raspy and full of sadness at the thoughts running through his head. A soft growl came from Nikolai at the part on dying. This was his best friend and he did not want him thinking of something so horrid and morbid. "So. . .this is our last night together?" Nikolai asked, his pale hand grabbing Jascha's gloved one. Jascha stared at his his best friend that he had known since he was a cub. They had never been separated before. He would miss everything about him. His barking laughter, undying compassion and the silly joke that he always made when they were around each other. Feeling Nikolai give his hand a tight squeeze, he returned a squeeze of her own. "Yeah. We'll meet again right on this spot."the Kingiros said quietly. Silence washed over the two in waves. The wind seemed to say whatever words they needed to say. As the moon rose higher into the sky, Nikolai moved away from Jascha. Curious green eyes stared at him in interest before looking surprised as a tattered scarf being placed around his neck. It was a worn out red and fit around his neck perfectly. Looking down, he frowned at the tearful amber eyes that stared back at him. "Nikolai, I can't take this. I just couldn't. I-" Jascha was cut off when Nikolai gave him a tight hug. "You can't change my mind. Y-You can give it back to me when you come home. Keep it safe." Nikolai said firmly. Jascha could not help but smile as he returned the hug. He hoped what he said was true. He allowed Nikolai to pull away after some time. He tightened the scarf around his neck, making a mental note that he would be carrying a piece of Nikolai with him everywhere he went. "I promise, okay?"he said, the smile turning into a grin as Nikolai gave a cheerful howl and ran back to their village. Watching his friend until he was out of sight, Jascha let out a sigh and sat in the snow. It was no longer the times for goodbyes. It was time for war.
