Chapter 1
Damion sighed as he stared out the window of his large room. The windows were opened, letting in a light breeze. The small breeze made dark apple red hair that tickled the nape of the skinny neck blow gently. Green eyes held longing as they watched the kids of the servants who were playing outside. Coughing somewhat, Damion turned away from the window and closed it with a painful sigh. The simple movement made him feel sick and the needles dig into his veins. It was such a nice day in New York and it was just the right weather for playing outside. Sure, it was cold but it was bearable and the afternoon sun made it all the better.
“That looks like so much fun…” Damion muttered as he closed his eyes with a cough. He curled up carefully in the satin sheets and laid his head on the comfy pillow. Noticing how pale his hands were, he cringed at the sigh and closed his eyes. It was getting worse. By ‘it’ he meant the disease he had had since he was old enough to remember. No one knew what kind of disease he had and the the search for cure was in progress. A knock on the door made him look up and wondered who it could be. The door opened slowly to show his nanny. She was a blond and fair skinned woman well in her mid-20’s. She had her hair in a low braid but the bangs framed her face well. She always wore a smile that warmed Damion to his heart and made him feel a little better about his sickness. The nanny was carrying a tray that had a sandwich, a drink and a cloth full of various medication. “Happy Birthday Damion! I brought you lunch! How do you feel being the big 10?” she said softly as she took the empty tray by his bedside and replaced it with the one she was carrying on the oak side table. Waiting for an answer, she checked all his machines for any abnormalities and found that everything was fine. “Okay I guess. I’m not hungry. Can‘t I go outside and play?” Damion said shortly as he curled up in the covers. The nanny sighed and cradled the empty tray in her arms. Patting the sick boy’s head, she smiled somewhat sweetly. “Please eat. You need to get your strength up. I’m sorry but you know your not allowed to go outside. ” she said before leaving, closing the carved oak doors behind her. Damion glared at the doors before closing his eyes. It was not fair. He did not have any friends and he was always neglected (in his opinion). His parents cared more about his big sister, Dia, who was getting married to some fancy nobleman from England. It was he who was considered the burden. The thoughts always saddened him. Trying not to cry, he let out raspy choked coughs and rubbed his teary eyes with his hands. ‘I might as well try to eat something. It would make my nanny happy. ’ he thought, eating what he could of what was prepared. Once the food settled in his stomach, it made him more tired than he usually was. His eyelids grew heavy and slowly closed as Damion fell asleep. It was well into the night when he awoke by a gentle hand on his face. He was surprised to see the parents in their dressings they wore for balls. “Hi honey. Did you have a nice sleep? Are you feeling well?” she asked as she help him sit up. Damion hugged his mother the tightest he could muster before letting go. “Yes. If I feel really good, could I start going outside?” he asked eagerly. His father leaned over and ruffled his hair affectionately with a smile. “Unfortunately, no. The doctors strictly forbid you for going outside. When you get better, you can go outside as much as you like. ” he said. Those hopes of going to be outside were shot down once again. Damion faked a smile at his loving parents. “Oh. Alright. Are you two going somewhere?” he asked. His mother nodded and kissed his forehead. “We are going to Dia’s engagement ball. She is getting married to Sir Oliver. ” she replied. His father checked his watch and grabbed his wife’s hand. He pulled her away from their son as he stopped in front of the door. “We have to go or we'll be late. We’ll be back in the morning. ” he said. “Bye honey! Make sure to take your medicine. ”his mother said as she blew a kiss to him.Damion watched the doors close again before playing with the sheets on his bed. He clicked off the lights and tried to go to sleep again. What was even the point of asking them to stay anymore? They were busy people and he couldn't stop them just because he wanted something so small. "Still, that doesn't give them a right to forget my birthday."Damion mumbled lowly as he scooted himself down to go to sleep. A sudden dipping of his bed made him sit up quickly. The sudden motion made him dizzy, making him hold his head and he instantly regretted it. “Ah. They always disappoint you, don’t they? Shame. ” a deep baritone voice said followed by a chuckle. Damion was suddenly cold and scared of what was on the bed. “W-Who's there? What d-do you want?” he whimpered as he coughed. The owner of the voice let out a throaty chuckle. Damion tried to see a face but it was too dark to see. It made him more afraid since he was scared of the dark. “Tsk. Tsk. Your so afraid, young one. I can smell your fear. Do you think I would hurt you? I am only a friend. ” the owner of the voice said. The little sick boy shut his eyes tightly and shuddered .The last time he checked, strangers were not friends. Espeically men who were able to sneak into his room. That alone confused him. His house was 50th floor. How the hell could anyone get inside without going through the front door? He meeped fearfully once a hand touched his head. “I-If you’re a friend, let me see y-your face. ” he said, trying to bring up some courage.
The owner of the voice let out a throaty chuckle as all the lights in the room lit up. It was a pale faced man in about his late 20s. He had an elongated face that helped frame his long black hair. Glowing red eyes stared at Damion that were filled with mirth and quiet hunger. The man had on a Victorian Era-esque style suit with the white tucked in ascot and ruffled sleeve. A dark black cape covered part of his shoulder as it pooled on the floor. His hands were cold and pale but daintily long. “See little one? I am only a friend. “he said while sitting on the bed. Damion still was a bit skeptical. This man could be a molester or even a kidnapper for all he knew. “How did you get in here?” he asked hesitantly. The man only gave a small smile. “I flew. I flew all the way from the Germany to get here. ” Damion blinked but relaxed a tad. This strange man didn't seem that dangerous. “That’s impossible…” he said. The man shook his head before standing. He went over to the oak doors, turning his back to the sickly boy as he stared at them. “Oh but I did. In case you have not notice, little one…I am a vampire. ”he said simply.
“A-A vampire? Your crazy. There is no such thing. You can’t be my friend then. You don’t want my blood. ” Damion said as he stayed wrapped up in the covers. He frowned a bit to himself and moved closer to the wall. “You’re a very smart boy, little one. Why would I not want thy blood?” “Because. I have a bad disease. It would make you sick too. ” The man turned around quietly before smiling, showing sharp fangs. “Ah. But that is the greatness of being a vampire. I cannot get sick from that disease of yours. ” he said while walking back over to the bed and sitting on it. That had hurt. Damion felt himself get angry and upset. He lifted up his arm to show the IV stuck in his arm that was hooked up to the machine. The same small IV was pumping medicine into his veins. “Silly? Silly?! I’ve had this since I could remember! I can’t do anything! I have no friends! My family barely cares unless I’m awake and hooked up to this stupid thing. They even forgot today was my birthday just to go to my stupid older sister engagement party that I couldn’t go to. ” he murmured as tears started to fall down the young face. He started to cough and sob, mumbling on how it wasn’t fair. The vampire was surprised but the feeling was quickly taken over by guilt. ‘Poor little one. Stuck in this room for so many years. Just like in a prison. ’ he thought before sighing softly. He scooted over on the bed and hugged the redhead gently. He started to rock him back and forth like a baby. He waited until he quieted down. “Do not worry, little one. Sir Lorenz will be your friend. I am sorry for being so careless in my words. Can you forgive me?” he asked. Damion looked up at the so called vampire, sniffling and wiping his face with his sleeves. "I-I guess so. Why are you being so kind? I thought you were going to eat me."he asked. Lorenz looked down at the tearful face and found himself coming up with a blank answer. That was a good question indeed. Anyone else he would have just taken his meal and moved on. The only reason he could think of that was he was a child, sick and he had noticed how lonely he was. "I don't know. I won't eat you, instead, I'll be your best friend. How about that? I'll visit you every night and keep you company."Lorenz said as he gave a cheerful smile instead, pulling the boy closer to him. Damion hesitated before giving a small smile and nodding. He would do anything to have a friend, even if he was a strange person. Plus, that smile was contagious. "Great. I'll be seeing you, little one. Oh, before you I go, what is your name? I'm Sir Lorenz."Lorenz said as he proceed to tuck Damion in the bed and making him a little more comfortable. Walking to the window, he opened and took a deep breath as the nighttime breeze washed over him. "I-Its Damion. Damion Truss Jr."Damion answered as he let out a gasp of shock at a Lorenz hopped out the window and floated easily in the air. The doubt that Lorenz had been lying flew right out the window. "What a pretty name. See you tomorrow night then, Damion."the vampire said cheerfully as he shut the window behind him and flew into the night. Damion watched the window until Lorenz was out of sight. The lights went out by themselves as before as Damion rubbed his temples. He wasn't sure if he'd be able to deal with having a visitor every night. What a hell of a birthday. AN: My first story and only two more chapters to go. Hope you enjoy. Reviews are pretty nice too.
