Prologue
The first thing he registered was warmth like nothing he’d ever felt before as he slowly stirred out of sleep to his internal clock. The heat of the sun filtering through his blinds, warming his bare neck and back felt good as well as the feel of the soft sheets against his body, keeping him snug, tight and even warmer. He nearly purred in content as he buried himself deeper into his marshmallow soft bed, very reluctant to get out of bed. An arm slung itself casually around his waist, strong, loose, but somewhat protective and heat spread like wild fire across the bare patch of skin it lay across.
He nearly moaned at the heat, not overwhelming or scalding, but intense, luring him slowly back to sleep. A naked chest pressed against his back and before he could decipher anything else, he felt soft breath against his neck, raising Goosebumps on where it was paying attention to before a slight pressure took over, something hard but warm brushing gently across his neck. It tickled and he shrugged it off, eyebrows knitting together in agitation although he managed a little smile.
“Cocoa, no!” He whined, mumbling softly, “Daddy’s trying to--” He interrupted himself with a small yawn. “…sleep.”
“Cocoa” was persistent nonetheless and moved in closer, and this time, the assault to his neck came with a brief sting, teeth nipping against his flesh, and then a soothing lick, a gentle kiss, lingering and moving across his neck.
“Ow, Cocoa! Stop biting.” Eyes still closed, he tried to swat his chocolate lab away, tired of the attention. He frowned as slowly, he found the lull of sleep slowly diminishing. He pushed but the dog just wouldn’t budge. Instead it caught his arm and held it to its chest and it took him a while before he realized….
His dog didn’t have hands to grab him with.
Cocoa?
His eyelids tediously pulled apart and he blinked several times, trying to clear his blurry vision as a yawn tore abruptly from his throat. He made out a slight silhouette but the sun was burning its way past the figure and straight into his retinas so he turned away and squinted at the alarm clock. It was six a.m.
As he slowly pushed the body off and tried to sit up in bed, last nights events came rushing back to him. The fight, Craig storming off, him waiting by the phone, depression, anger, resentment, fear, loneliness, nothing on t.v., pacing, drinking, writing…
And that was the last thing he remembered before it all blanked out. He blinked several times, trying to understand all his jumbled thoughts. But his emotions—and body—were quicker to react and fully comprehend what was going on. Unconsciously, he leaned into his lover’s chest, relief overwhelming him as he stretched in the embrace, disturbing the sheets sprawled across his lower half and exposing him to ravenous eyes. His head fell on his lover’s shoulder and he sighed as he felt him shift to allow him more space, affectionately petting his hair.
“I’m sorry.” He whispered, closing his eyes against the soft ministrations. He didn’t get an answer in reply but really didn’t expect one from his silent and stubborn boyfriend. His body spoke volumes on his feelings and it reciprocated his own perfectly.
He touched the arms holding him closely, running his fingers down the large, built biceps and pulling them tightly against him. Lips ran the length of his jaw, moving up for a kiss and tilting his head back, Adreyn moved to receive the kiss. As their lips fell against each others, sending a small current of excitement through Adreyn’s lower belly, he looked into his lover’s eyes and screamed, pulling back as if he’d been burned.
A string of profanities left his mouth as he shuffled off the bed rather ungracefully and quickly retrieved the sheet slipping off his waist, pulling it around his neck to hide his entire body and regain the warmth he’d suddenly lost, though his cheeks were aflame with what was left of it, deeply embarrassed.
“Fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck.” He paced around, nearly pulling his hair out and stopped to sink against the wall, moaning, “Fuuuuuck!” It seemed like the only word he could force out of his mouth. He took calming breaths. “Okay, Adry, calm down, get it together, and breathe. You can do this, no prob. Okay….Okay.”
He took a big breath and looked up, ready to apologize. “Look, I’m really sorry about last night and whatever, but you have to get the hell out. I don’t owe you money, do I--?” He lost his words as he fully took in the other man.
The man literally forced the breath out of him. Mouth agape, he gawked at the Adonis before him. He was the epitome of perfection, from head to toe. He was a giant of a man, with a strong, powerful muscular body, complete with a steel six packed abdomen. His long legs just barely surpassed his King Sized bed and he leaned on one elbow with his other arm slung around his stomach, head against the headboard, completely naked and openly watching him as well. He seemed so comfortable with the situation, in his bed, naked.
Adreyn swallowed. The man was tall, dark, and definitely handsome with a golden brown complexion that Adreyn assumed came from an Indian ancestry. His ebony mane was short and slightly dishelmed from sleep, and the cut certainly brought out his cheekbones and firm jaw, which clenched and unclenched as he observed Adreyn. But what stood out most on him were his unusual eyes.
They were the palest green eyes he’d ever seen and disturbing the way they contrasted with his dark complexion. They were eerie the way they seemed to illuminate, wild and feral like a panther’s gaze fixed on its prey. Adren shrank down several sizes under that gaze.
Silence reigned between them for a second.
Adreyn was shocked that he’d managed to bring someone like this home. Adreyn knew he was an attractive man but this man…he was just so surreal, like something out of a b…ook.
Adreyn paused and scrutinized the man closer, if that was even possible. His eyes widened dramatically. This wasn’t possible.
The man looked like something out a book because he was…out of his book. “Ares?” He whispered so softly he was surprised said man caught the name and nodded, a small, pleased look overcoming his shadowed, impersonal face, glad that he’d finally recognized him.
Adreyn couldn’t help himself. He burst out laughing hysterically. It was official: He’d lost his mind.
