Chapter 1

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Groggily she awoke on the worn wooden floor. The shuffling of feet told her that the men from before were still in her house. A sharp scream woke her further and she fought to sit up. A calloused hand pushed her and she fell back to the floor easily. "Please... No harm him..." She recognized the voice as her mother's but couldn't understand a word of what she was saying. Another scream echoed through the small house as it was coupled with a dull thud and the laughter of their attackers. "Anda le uneiyakei!" She said, beginning to cry and tried to get to her mother. A cold steel tipped boot was pushed down against her chest and kept her pinned to the floor. "Anda..." She called out for her mother and cried when she wasn't immediately answered. "Anda!" This time her efforts were rewarded with a groan from her mother as she slowly regain consciousness near her. "Denya buya Kaylen." She cracked open eyes she didn't remember closing and looked towards her mother; comforted by her calming words and silent promises. The view of her mother left a permanent scar in her mind. Her mother's once golden hair was damp and sticky with her own blood. A gash on the top of her head weeped openly and tears sprung to Kaylen's eyes. Her mother's equally golden eyes were slightly obscured by this bloodied hair as well as one eye was slowly swelling shut. It was at this moment that Kaylen wished the world was different. She wanted the humans to be nice and she wanted a father to be here to protect them from these evil beasts. "Get the small one out of here. He'll fetch a nice price." Rough and calloused hands grabbed at her once more and pulled her to standing. She fought back with all she could muster in her small body. Her mother began screaming and it fueled her fighting. Digging in her heals she went lax and allowed her body to droop to the floor; a technique her mother had taught her. She was promptly slapped sharply for her actions and thrown onto the shoulder of one of the men. "Don't worry mama elf, we'll take good care of him." It came from the human nearest to her mother as he kneeled next to her fallen mother. "Besides in the state you're in, it's not like you can care for him anyways." He gave her a sweet smile as he poked her a bit with the butt of his sword. "Asha lena vel, Magandla Buya-" She was instantly cut short by a forceful slap to the face. "Now, now, little elf lady I may not know elvish but there's no casting with us around." He stood and looked his sword over. "If maganda buyo or whatever really loved you she wouldn't have let this happen to you." Kaylen watched from her vantage point as the dirty human man positioned the tip of his sword over her mother and began to bring it down. She watched in shock before leaning down and biting deeply into the back of her carrier. Even through his shirt her mouth was filled with the taste of sweat and her nose was assaulted by the musk of a man; she bit through until she tasted iron. Her captor screamed and threw her to the ground, "Fucking elf!" His eyes flared and she scrambled away hoping to get to her mother in time. Time slowed as she ran; focusing fully on the sharp glinting metal as it approached her mother's back. Her legs felt sluggish as she fought to stand and run. Stumbling back into the house she watched the tip begin to sink it's way into the defenseless woman. Something snapped in her and she screamed. A heat she had never felt before burned its way through her as her mind was filled with the image before her and a woman's voice, "Neha Kaylen, doye ante le muyada." She understood the language as her own, but not the placement confused her. Unknowingly she answered the voice as anger boiled to the surface towards the attackers. She wanted them to hurt and feel as frustrated and helpless as she felt now. The voice returned to fill her head, "Lemmakei, bannen dahen." She had but a moment to ponder the meaning before she was filled with a tingling burn that caused her to scream even louder. It was a scream from the very depths of her that was filled with pain, helplessness, anguish, and anger; all directed at the human around her. The burn in her flashed outwards physically causing the men around her to wince at the brightness of it all. The man with the sword grit his teeth and fought to remain standing as the light seemed to have sustenance and pushed him a bit. His sword had already imbedded itself about three inches into the woman and he intended to finish the job. Outside, the man that had been carrying her stood in awe as light poured from the small cottage he and his friends had invaded. To him, it appeared as though a small sun had been born within the house. Her mind was completely clear and quiet as the men screamed around her; the world had been muted. All that existed was her, the voice, and the now warm feeling it had brought with it. Her mind wandered a bit to times her and her mother had shared in her short life. She was sitting at the table awaiting her mother's special dinner. Today was her fourteenth birthday and her mother had worked all day on whatever it was she was hiding. Turning, her mother proudly displayed a slow cooked rabbit with fresh baked bread and vegetables. She was instantly filled with joy. For as long as she could remember she had loved rabbit meat and her birthday happened to fall in the best season for it; autumn. Her mother set the plates down with a grin all her own. The warm sweet smell of everything left her drooling instantly and she reached for a few of the vegetables to fill her plate. The table shook a bit and she dropped them to the table. She stared at them a little confused as to why that had happened. The house swayed a bit and objects fell from the shelves only to clamor to the floor; her mother continuing to smile. The house jerked sharply and she let out a scream as she awoke on the back of a wagon; gagged and bound tightly. The man that had carried her out earlier was driving the small one horse cart. She watched him look back slowly, "You better fetch me a good price boy. After what you did..." He grit his teeth a moment before lashing out punching her with all his might square in her back. Unable to do anything, she took the blow and whimpered wondering if her mother was alright. "Stupid elves. No wonder your people are a curse." He fell silent after that and she just watched him. His short brown hair was poorly tended and looked as though he hadn't bathed in a week. The shirt he wore was a grey brown from all the dirt and sweat it had accumulated. A blood stain over his right shoulder-blade gave her a sense of pride. No matter how strong or tall the human man was, she had still managed to hurt him. The steady rocking of the cart, coupled with the taciturn man, put her to sleep once more. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Translations: "Anda le uneiyakei!" - "Don't hurt my mama!" "Anda..." - "Mama..." "Denya buya Kaylen." - "It will be okay Kaylen." "Asha lena vel, Magandla Buya-" - "Send your fire, Holy Mother-" "Neha Kaylen, doye ante le muyada." - "Child Kaylen, what is it you desire?" "Lemmakei, bannen dahen." - "Worry not, it shall be done." Alright so that's the first chapter. Please review or rate; it fuels creative fires. Also there will be much more going on with this story. Right now there is no sex or anything too overly disturbing. I intend to up the ante in later chapters. So please continue to read. :D ~Lain Iwakura
