Deal With a Devil

Chief Mitchell Woods was more than a little nervous about this. They'd had a string of serial murders within the past three months, all of them violent, and all of them unsolved. The force had excercised every option it had, but they were unable to find anything on this guy. No fingerprints, no bodily fluids, not even a footprint.

The FBI was called in just a few weeks ago, but were having the same results. Professional profilers, complete scans of the crime scenes and the bodies, and they still weren't turning up dick. Now it had come to this.

He turned to Agents Winters, handing her the file. "Good luck. We'll be watching to make sure. Be careful with him. He's unpredictable and dangerous."

Agent Amber Winters took the file and nodded at the chief in a very professional way. "Duly noted." She turned her gaze to the man inside the small room. She couldn't get a clear view of, as he was wearing a straight jacket, and effectively chained to the floor. He even had a leather mask on to protect him from biting at people. "Is the mask really necessary?" She asked.

"We didn't think so, until he took an ear off of one our guys. I'm telling you, I want to stop whoever's behind these crimes as much if not more than the next guy, but I don't think it's a good idea to rely too much on this wack-job." He jerks his thumb at the window for emphasis.

"Well, I'm sure we can work some sort of deal out with him. No one's asking you to let him go free. But right now, he is all we have to rely on." She said simply, before brushing a few stray strands of her silky blonde hair from her face. She turned on her heel and walked out of the room. The chief watched nervously as she walked into the interrigation room, sitting down across from Justin Graves.

__________

He watched the woman walk in, he'd say maybe five foot six, one hundred twelve pounds, blood type.... B positive. Blonde hair cut kind of short, green eyes, and a posture that said she was confident and in control. He chuckled despite himself as she sat down, looking at him levelly.

"Mr. Graves. My name is Amber Winters. I am here on official business, and was hoping you might answer a few questions." She started, her hands moving in front of her, steepling her fingers.

"Okay... No..." Justin said, his voice had a slight growling edge to it, which almost made her think of a caged beast. But there was a kind of humor in it too, almost as if he delighted playing with her like this.

"Mr. Graves," She started a bit annoyed.

"Please, call me Justin. Mr. Graves is dead."

She took a deep breath, calming herself. She had understood this man was crazy. But she had no idea he would be so childish. "Very well... Justin. This is a rather serious matter. I have come to inform you that we need your help, and in exchange for some information, we will reduce your sentence."

Justin was silent for a moment. "Really? A reduced sentence?" He paused as if thinking it over for a moment. Then he burst out in maniacal laughter. "Do you think I'm fucking stupid?!" He asked between fits of laughter. "What are you going to do? Reduce it from three life sentences to one and half?" He shook his head as he laughed. But suddenly, it just stopped, and he looked at her with a hardness that shocked her. The fact that he could shift moods like that was terrifying. "Now, if you're done wasting my time, I'd like to go back to my cell, and enjoy a nice quiet evening of solitude."

Winters bit back her fear, and stood up, walking over to where she was leaning in front of him, glaring into his eyes, which she could see were a dull brown color now. "Listen you bastard! We need to know something, and we will get information out of you. I'm just here to try to offer a peaceful alternative."

He chuckled a bit. "Ooo... Threats. Careful, I like my women fiesty." He outright laughed. "Though, it does bring an interesting question to mind. If you need my help so badly, what is it that you've found that's worse than me?" He leaned back in his chair, as much as he had lee-way to, which is to say not much. It still gave him an aura of cockiness though. "I don't owe you people anything. In fact, I think I'll enjoy watching you work yourselves into a frenzy trying to track down what's gotten you so scared."

She sneered openly at him. "You worthless piece of shit!! You really are a monster aren't you?" She actually drew her hand back and smacked him across the side of the face. She knew the chief would be in to escort her out soon, but how could anyone deal with this person?

His head snappped to one side from the impact and he started to chuckle. "A monster? No, I'm merely the result of what this world gave me. If they didn't want me to be the worst thing in the world, they shouldn't have given me the worst the world had to offer."

She was caught off guard by what he said, and the completely serious way he said, but before she could respond, the chief's men were in the room, escorting her out. When she had reached the hallway the chief walked up to her. "What the hell was that?!"

She dropped her head, chewing over her words carefully. "I... I don't know. He just got under my skin so bad. I've never had that happen before."

The chief sighed and nodded. "I told you to be careful with him. He's not as stupid as he likes to lead people to believe. Come on, let's take a break, let him stew for a bit, and we can get some coffee."

As she walked with the chief something kept nagging at the back of her mind. What he had said was important, like he had told her something she needed to know without actually telling her. It was frustrating. "You know, some coffee would do me good."

To be continued...

Author's note: Well, I'm sorry it's so short, first off. I've only got so much free time. I will try to update when I have time, and when I can remember what the hell is going on in the story. I hope that despite the length, you find it intriguing enough to continue reading as I update. Rates and Reviews are always appreciated. Also, I'm sure the theme has been done several times before, such as in the movie Silence of the Lambs. I apologize for the cliche, but I couldn't think of a better, more fitting way to start the story. Also, the next few chapters will likely contain story and character development. Sorry, no hot and heavy sex scenes yet.
