At First Sight

Chapter 1: At First Sight

“Get a job Steve. You’re here too often,” Ron joked. The owner of the gym I worked out at didn’t seem to understand that I just wanted some time to relax. However, it had almost been a month since school ended, and I really needed to get off my ass.

“I’ve got one, Ron. I’m starting next week,” I lied. I was tired of him badgering me about it. I thought about where I could apply that summer as I chalked up my hands, but nothing really appealed to me. I let out a quiet sigh as I stepped up to the rings.

“Alright, Steve. Let’s see that strength sequence one last time before we switch events,” Mr. Downie, my coach, said as he helped me up to the rings.

I adjusted my grip and pulled myself up so I hung upside down. I let myself swing down and up into and iron cross. My chest and shoulders straining as I silently counted to three while holding myself steady. I dropped backwards until I was horizontal, face up under the rings and bounced back up into another iron cross. Feebly trying to hold myself up for the second strength hold, my shoulders collapsed and I dropped down to the ground.

“Same as before. You gotta hold it after the bounce or you won’t get credit,” Downie said. After doing that strength sequence for the last hour, my muscles were all but dead. “But good work thought. Let’s go to horse.”

I turned my attention back to my search for a job as I took my grips off and retrieved my wrist supports from my bag. Maybe I could go back to the theater, I thought, referring to the movie theater I had worked at the summer before. It wasn’t a bad job. The pay was terrible, but the hours were ok and the other employees were great. What the hell. I’ll give it another shot.

“Thank ya for 'oldin'. This is Nick, 'ow can I 'elp ya?” the all too familiar British accent made me smile.

“Hi, Nick, this is Steve K.,” I replied. “Do you remember me from last summer?”

“Oh yeah! It’s great to 'ear from ya again, Stevie. What are ya callin' about?”

“Well, I sent in an application about a week ago and I was wondering if I could set up a time for an interview.”

“There’s no need for an interview with you, Steve. I already know you’re qualified. I’ll just need ya to come in to do some paper work, and take the drug test, which I’m sure will be no problem for ya. If ya could come in this Tuesday, that would be fantastic. Then we can start ya on Friday.”

“Yeah, I can come in on Tuesday. What time?”

“Could ya be 'ere around three o’ clock, mate?

“Yea, that’ll work.”

“Great. I’ll see ya then. Cheers, mate!”

That was a lot easier than searching for a new job, I thought. I didn’t feel like taking the time and effort to search for a new place and fill out a bunch of different applications. Now I could tell Ron I actually had a job without lying to him.

I leaned back in my chair and stretched out. It was already almost one in the afternoon and I had only been awake for about a half hour. I didn’t like waking up in the summer. Sometimes I wished I could just sleep all day. I stood up from my chair and yawned, I suppose I should probably tell mom and dad before I forget.

I wonder if I’ll see anyone I recognize from last year, I thought as I walked down the long mall hallway towards the lobby of the theater. I walked past the managers’ office and saw two employees I had never seen before. With the high turnover rate that place had, I figured that I probably wouldn’t know the majority of the current staff. But when I stepped up to the service desk, I saw a familiar face.

“Hey Jake,” I said. I glanced at his nametag to make sure I got his name right, and I saw ‘SUPERVISOR’ under his name. “So I see they’ve made you a supervisor now.”

“Yup,” he replied. “What are you doing here, Steve? Seeing a movie?”

Surprised that he remembered me, I answered, “Nah, I’m here to see Nick. Can you call him up here?”

Jake grabbed the walkie-talkie on the desk and called, “Nick, could you come up to the service desk?” He put the walkie back down and turned his attention back to me. “You gonna work here again?”

“Yeah, I needed a job and I was too lazy to—“

"Stevie K!” I turned around to see the stout figure of the British manager quickly walking my way. He extended his hand and I gave it a good, strong shake. “Good to see ya again, mate! If you could give me a second, I need to pop into the office for a bit to get your paperwork. I’ll be right back.”

Nick scurried off to the office and I turned back to Jake. “As I was saying, I was too lazy to find another job, so I figured what the hell, I’ll just come back here and work.”

“That’s cool,” Jake said. “So are you just gonna be around for the summer again?”

“I don’t know. I’m still trying to decide whether or not I want to go back to Purdue next semester. What about you? You going to college this year?”

“Nah, I’m taking a semester off before I go to college.”

“That’s cool.”

It wasn't long before Nick came back out of the manager's office with a few papers and a pen in his hand and waved for me to follow him. I took one last look around the lobby before disappearing into the Human Resources office and one of the new employees caught my eye. She was a young oriental girl with long black hair past her shoulders. Her bangs were draped over her left eye. It was hard to see her behind the concession stand as she couldn't have been much taller than 5'2". But she had this twinkle in her smile as she greeted a customer that I could never forget.

I never really payed attention to much while I was filling the paperwork out with my manager. I couldn't get that girl's smile out of my thoughts. So I decided to try to find her again after I finished the paperwork, which unfortunately took longer than I expected. When I went back out to the lobby, she was no longer there. I figured that it wasn't worth asking anyone where she went, because I'd be working along side her in a few days.

So I left the theater with the little asian girl on my mind, hoping that going back to my old job wouldn't be as bad as I expected knowing she will be there with me.
