~Preface~

They had been rivals, even enemies, growing up, always trying to one-up each other

in just about everything they did. She was always better in sports, where he excelled

in classes, atypical of the stereotypical all American boy and girl. But they never

seemed far apart, he Graduated Valedictorian with her just a mere 0.13 points behind

as Salutatorian. She took home MVP, Captain or Co-Captain in nearly all the sports she

competed in, soccer, tennis, volleyball, softball and track, where he always seemed to

manage to get Co-Captain, the Coach’s Award, or some other ‘cute’ award for effort. It

was their passion for beating the other that drove them to do so well. Always passing

cruel remarks to the other as they passed in the hall, “How’d you get that MVP award,

suck coach off again?” he’d snap where she would reply, “I think you beat me to it,

egghead.”

Thank God that was over, after Graduation they parted ways, heading to different coasts

to start their college education. They didn’t try to keep touch, despite the fact that

they had shared many of the same friends. Quickly they made new friends at their

respective schools, learning that college was far more then classes, books and papers,

but also included hangovers, crazy roommates and late night sex-capades. Despite what

you may believe about competitive teenagers, they didn’t lose their heads in this new

environment, both adapted faster then their parents would choose to admit. They wouldn’t

find out until later, but both found a strange obsession with being the ‘dominate one’

in their relationships, maybe it was from all those years of competition or maybe it was

something else, but each enjoyed the power they gained over their partners.

Over the years each had their ups and downs in life, after college he got married, only

to find his wife cheating on him 2 years into the marriage. Thankfully they had no

children, and the divorce was quick, if not painless. She, on the other hand, found

herself alone after college, going through relationship after relationship, never

finding that ‘Mr. Right’. It had been 8 years since they had seen each other, neither

crossing the other’s mind since they parted ways, kind of an out-of-sight, out-of-mind

deal. Little did they know, soon they would meet up again, in the most unlikely of

places, and find the most unlikely of relationships.
