Chapter One

Lost…so lost on her own. Kara felt alone as darkness crept upon her from every side. Her mother’s tight grip held her wrist as she watched the seemingly mirror image of her stepbrother vanishing to the depths of the darkness, dragged along by his father. She opened her mouth to cry out to him as tears fell down her soft cheeks; no sound came from her mute throat as the loneliness closed in on her.

Kara sat bolt upright in the darkness of her room, her hand flying out to a brother who wasn’t there. Sweat made her pj’s stick to her small body as she heaved heavily; the night terror seemed to have had her holding her breath.

“A dream,” she panted in the darkness, “only a dream.”

She layed back down in a sad attempt to sleep until morning, but her excited brain wouldn’t allow such an impulse. After nearly an hour of tossing and turning she gave up and went to her bathroom to shower. Maybe a shower will cool my thoughts. She stripped off her now soaked pj’s with a shiver. Her clammy skin was cold without the protection of clothing. She quickly started the shower and jumped into the hot water that spurted out of the showerhead. She closed her eyes and relished in the relaxing feel of the water pounding her soft skin. The steam filled her lungs as she stood under the forceful water. She ran her hands over her slender body, removing the disgusting feeling of sweat and clamminess from her skin.

The terrors were coming to her more frequently now. Her mother had passed away two months ago, and Kara was pressed to find a means of living. With her schoolwork demanding so much of her time she found it near impossible to find work that would pay well enough to support her and the large apartment she lived in. Her mind wandered to the past as she leaned against the cool wall of the shower.

Her mother had been married once, to the man who was her father. Kara didn’t remember her father, she never saw him again after her mother had ran from him, thankfully taking her along with her. They had long years while Kara was a young child where her mother devoted all her time to her daughter. It was when she turned eight that her mother brought another man into her life. His name was Lohan, and for months previous to him being brought to her birthday party her mother had spent several nights with him, gradually falling in love with him. But Kara never attached to Lohan, it was his eleven-year-old son Daniel she adored from then on. He was three years older than she was, but she always managed to keep up with him as they grew. He protected her from frogs and bugs or anything else that terrified her. He was called upon many a time to squish a spider, and cried upon when she found a dead butterfly. She had been so fragile then, and he always gave her his shoulder.

They seemed to build a small family, one that had been broken before, but now was growing together to heal itself. On Kara’s twelfth year her world destroyed itself again. She never understood what passed between her mother and Lohan but for a year before the ending of their family he never came around, and Daniel seemed to cling onto her more than ever. It was one day at the bus station, her mother had told her that they were going on a trip and had to pack all their things to go. The lie she was told was that they would come back, it wasn’t until Daniel came running up to her that she realized what was happening. His fifteen year old self ran to her and for the first time she saw him crying as he wrapped his arms around her tightly. Yelling and cursing bombarded them as Lohan came and pried his son off of her as her mother dragged her onto the train by her wrist. Daniel had been her best friend, her crying shoulder, her only brother. He had tried to contact her over the years of their separation, and her mother had always fought him back with her life. She wondered what her mother feared of him so.

The steam in the shower was almost suffocating now as she turned the water off and stepped out onto a towel. She studied herself harshly in the body length mirror before her. Her small build started with narrow shoulders followed by slender arms and a well-bloomed bust. Her ribs could be counted through her skin as they narrowed to a small waist and then to womanly hips. Her slender thighs held a fair gap between them, satisfying Kara that she was healthily built. She snatched a towel from the wrack and began to dry herself starting with her long auburn hair. It spilled down her back in a dripping cascade and was matched in brilliance of color by her deep brown eyes which held small flecks of green when the light hit them just right.

Kara went to her bed and fell naked into the now cool sheets. She felt much better now that she was clean but still held a small feeling of loneliness that grew in the silence of the night.

“Is there no shoulder for me now?”

She spoke aloud to the darkness in a hope to break the silence, but she was met with only it’s cold return. She sat up and walked silently to her empty kitchen. There was something exhilarating to her to be able to walk about her empty apartment bare skinned, but she hated being alone. She had never been alone in her life and now that her mother was gone, she had no one to be with but the silence. The awful cold silence. She picked up the phone that was on the wall and held it to her ear for a moment listening to the buzz on the line. She stared at the yellowed paper taped to the wall below the phone that held several old numbers of her mother’s friends and one at the very bottom with the smeared name Lohan beside it. Her heart fluttered in her chest then went to her stomach as she dialed the forbidden number slowly.

It rang, she half expected the number to be replaced by now, or disconnected. But the cold fact hit her now as the phone rang in her ear, her heart fluttering to the sound each time as she half begged for someone to pick up, anyone. A click cut one of the rings short and a tired male voice met her ear; she didn’t recognize it.

“Hello?” He sounded groggy whoever it was as she realized it was two in the morning.

“Um…I-is Daniel there?” A tired sigh came from the man.

“Yeah this is he. Who is in so much need to call me at 2am?”

His voice was tinged with frustration but she was so overjoyed to hear him again after five years.

“You probably don’t remember me but, I’m Kara.”

A silence met her, she hated that more than anything; the awful suffocating silence. She was about to hang up the phone, figuring that her hero didn’t remember the twelve year old girl who screamed his name in a train station so many years ago, but his now awake voice stopped her.

“I can’t believe it. Kara…I-I thought I’d never hear from you again. I tried so many times to talk to you but, your mother…”

He stopped, nothing more needed to be said, and they both knew that her mother was the only reason why they didn’t live as brother and sister.

“She died, two months ago.”

Silence again, she wanted so badly to see him again, to talk to him and meet him all over again. She was desperate for a family again; she threw her mother’s foolish love life aside and focused on her needs now. And she needed to find a friend.

“I’m so sorry Kara. But, how are you living alone and doing school?” She sighed.

“I’m not, I mean, I’m living alone but, I’m trying to find a job that will pay well and let me go to school. It’s becoming clear now that I can’t stay in my apartment anymore. But I don’t have the money to find a new place. Hell I can’t even buy food right now, all I have is toast and a can of raviolis.”

She was happy to hear him laugh at her joke, but his tone turned serious soon after.

“You can’t live like that Kara you’re going to be evicted sometime and what then?” She thought for a moment.

“I could always sleep in the lab at school and raid the cafeteria when I’m hungry.” Neither of them laughed, she was dead serious.

“That’s ridiculous.”

“Well if you have a better idea, please, don’t hesitate to share.”

“It’s decided then.” She blinked, a bit confused now at where he was going.

“What’s decided?” She could hear the smile on his voice, even after all the years apart.

“You’re going to live with me.”
