Betrayed
Introduction
I knew I was in trouble the day he walked into my arms and danced with me around the living room as I sung quietly to my eight month old nephew to put him to sleep. He looked deeply into my eyes and said “someday Fiona it will be ours”. I laughed it off; this was definitely not someone I planned on spending the rest of my life with let alone having a baby with. He was my cousins on again off again boyfriend who still lived with her through out the break ups. I’m moving too quickly though, I should probably start at the beginning.
I was eighteen and had graduated high school in June. It was September and my older sister had just given birth. I agreed to move in with her and her husband to take care of my nephew while they worked. I hadn’t been able to go to school right away because of financial issues so it was a perfect solution. I was also going to be able to live back in my old town which I had been away from for four years.
The day we moved in my cousin, Cara, who was a few months younger than me and a senior that year was on our doorstep with her boyfriend Mike willing to help with whatever she could. We had grown apart when I left but for the first fourteen years of my life she had been my best friend. The only problem was we were completely different people with totally different personalities which meant we fought like cats and dogs. I had only met her boyfriend a couple times at family gatherings, most recently my graduation party. He was the epitome of everything I hated in high school. Mr. All American jock, captain of every school sport and Mr. Popularity at all the parties were just a few ways to describe him. He knew everyone and everyone knew him, he was the “it” guy. He stood at six foot two with darker features and more muscle than any one person should be allowed to have, it was dangerous. I myself was five two and probably half his weight. I had always been shyer and less social in school. Never participated in sports or activities and hadn’t shown up at a party since sophomore year. Mainly because I had been to three different high schools in three different states, but all in all he was the guy I hated in school. I assumed I wouldn’t be able to stand him, my cousin who was Miss peppy and popular would be hard enough especially with her gushing about how the best friends were back together.
The weeks went by and they ended up just about moving themselves into our house. We didn’t mind too much at first but it began wearing on us all. My sister was going crazy never being able to have one night alone in her house. I was sick of my cousin making me feel inferior and my brother in law just didn’t like the lack of permission they asked when they showed up. The most shocking thing about it all though, was how much we all liked her boyfriend. It turned into us being annoyed with her and loving him coming over. He would bring over dinner or offer to cook for us, was polite always and fun as hell to get a little too drunk around.
We all began to notice how badly my cousin treated him. She would yell at him, mock him; hit him, just about anything to show she had the upper hand. We couldn’t understand why he would stay with someone like her, she was plain and simply put mean. Secretly we hoped he wouldn’t leave her though, he was becoming a great friend to all of us. After the initial month or so he and I started hanging out more and talking. He flirted like crazy but neither of us took it seriously, well I thought so at the time. My cousin began getting jealous, but I really couldn’t understand why. She was tall skinny and had a body to kill for. Her face could use some work but when compared to my short stubby frame, I thought she was gorgeous.
Around December I had a big blow out with my brother in law which resulted in me moving back to my parents in Connecticut. I wish I could say that was the end of my ordeal with Mike and Cara, but it hadn’t even started yet. I met him eighteen a virgin who’d had two boyfriends in her entire life and pretty much had only kissed a boy and came out of it taken advantage of, my innocence vanished and worst of all I had betrayed a girl who thought I was not only family, but her best friend.
That’s just the background information. I wanted to see if anyone would be interested in the set up. To tell the truth this all actually happened, and well I’m not proud of it, but I don’t regret it. I needed to write it out because it still isn’t real in my mind.
