Never Give Up
She sat there on her fathers sofa rewinding the past three hours in her mind over and over again just to make sure that she hadn’t missed out a single detail of what she could remember and that what she saw was indeed real and true. For one last time she walked herself through the event in her mind.
She had loaded her bags into the trunk of her car and went to pick up her boyfriend of one year, David. Having given her a spare key she had let herself into his apartment. Hearing music coming from the alarm clock in his bedroom she knew that he was just waking up. Faintly smiling she chose to surprise him rather than acknowledging her presence. She took off her coat and placed it on the back of the couch on her way to his bedroom, instead of seeing him lying there she was greeted with an empty bed, noticing the connecting door to the bathroom slightly ajar she walked up to it to successfully surprise him.
The sight before her had every aspect of her body frozen stiff. There before her was her boyfriend standing before the sink, his erected member appearing and disappearing into a sopping wet snatch of a blond woman. Having stood there frozen for what seemed to be an eternity she finally began to move from her spot. Then from there her memory had become chopped up and was missing pieces. She had remembered after meeting the brown eyes of her boyfriend she turned away but then her memory jumped to her waiting in the hallway impatiently pressing the down button of the elevator, then to her just sitting there in her car. But for one thing she did remembered clearly was that she never had to worry about looking over her shoulder because David hadn’t chased her, though she waited in her car for a painstakingly long time he still never came down. She finally giving up on him decided to proceed with the rest of the days plan, she would drive the three hour drive to her fathers and spend Christmas as happily as she could be with her family.
“Hey Deens, you okay?” Nadine looked up to see her eldest brother Alec sitting down on the coffee table in front of her. She faintly smiled at him.
“I’m fine, just trying to make sense of everything is all.” the look in his eye rapidly changed from concern to anger.
“If you want me to beat him to a bloody pulp I will.” he spoke as he clenched his fists, but Nadine laughed lightly, as she gathered his hands in hers.
“If I wanted him beaten to a bloody pulp I would’ve already done it. It’s just that,” she paused not knowing if she should speak what’s on her mind, but by the encouraging squeeze her brother gave her she continued. “Well its just that David lasted the longest out of everyone and I just thought that maybe he was the one who would be different. The one who would stay with me for a bit longer, I mean is thirteen months too much to ask for?” her brother smirked lightly at her last comment.
“Deens both of us know that thirteen months isn’t what you’re asking for, you want a lifetime and we all get that. It just must suck for you to watch us run into these unsuspecting romances we found, when you’re the true romancist in the family.”
“Yeah, true romancist because I’m the only girl in the family.” Alec looked right through her facade. And a facade it was but very few saw it. Nadine was the youngest of five and the only female in the second generation. But two years after being born her mother had passed away in a tragic car accident, thus leaving her to be raised in a house full of men. Having mostly a male perspective of things Nadine had grown up differently than most girls, throughout her life she had always been considered as one of the guys, for she had shared the same interests as most guys.
As Nadine reached her late teen years she had realized she was missing something from her life, that she saw the other girls had it and she wanted it too. She wanted a male companion, someone she could share her time with, she wanted romance. When she first realized this she didn’t know if this was normal behavior or not, well in her case it wasn’t for she never gave the opposite gender a second glance, unless of course she was captain of a sports team and needed to pick out her players. So she had gotten the opinion from her father who only sighed and called her brothers into the room for help, he explained what she told him and they only smiled at her claiming that Nadine’s balls her shrinking. Her father only groaned and she pounced on them giving them each bruises that lasted days. After settling themselves Nadine began asking the questions she had, and they answered best to their abilities. Although they tried, their answers weren’t completely helpful but Nadine was grateful to be able to talk about it with them anyway. Soon enough Nadine’s hunger for romance was fed with romance novels and movies and soon enough she had become the hopeless romantic. Though as her relationship experience grew and her phone book began to be filled she began losing hope in romance and this last relationship proved to her that indeed romance was non-existent.
“Deens I’m not going to have another argument on why you’re a romancist. I just don’t have that much time.” he laughed when she threw a pillow at him. “But seriously sis, I think you should just give romance a rest for a while, then go back to your search for romance when you’re completely relaxed.”
Nadine sat there thinking it over when she looked up at her big brother with mixed emotions in her eyes. “I think I’ve finally given up on romance Alec.” She spoke softly.
“You should give things another chance before jumping to the first relevant conclusion you can come up with before the night ends.”
“I’ve already given things a chance! I mean every time I think that this one is it, this one is for me I find him fucking a girl on the bathroom sink, or the back of some car, or against the refrigerator, hell even in my bedroom! I think that I should stop looking for something that isn’t there.”
“Okay, okay, from what you told me you have every right to give up but you’re only twenty-four, you shouldn’t have such definite decision about love or romance.”
She only scoffed. “Please Alec, I may only be twenty four but I have been in more supposed serious relationships than all of your flings put together. And we all know that that is a shit load of flings with just one of you guys, and put all together its more than you can even imagine.”
Momentarily reminiscing, Alec smirked at the comparison, but once remembering what she was comparing their flings too he soon frowned. He looked at his little sister and sighed. “Okay Nadine, you win this argument but you better not turn into one of those depressing woman who are only depressed because their alone.”
She snorted “The only reason for me to ever become depressed is if the women you guys bring with you to these gatherings stopped cooking and asked if they could join in the game of tackle football we play every time we’re together. I’d be depressed for mainly two reasons, one, we’ll be playing with women who’ve never touched anything that resembled a football and two, there would be no food to eat afterwards.” they smirked and embraced each other in a brotherly sisterly way.
