Chapter 1 Capture

The Aleki were attacking again. It was the third raid in a month, and the defenses of North Castle were weakening. Mai watched the other women milling around the cellar as they waited for news of the battle overhead.

Mai was King Aurili’s youngest and only daughter of eight children. She was his pride and joy, which was why she was tucked safely away in the cellars with the old women and priestesses. Her cousins, all girls, were allowed to fight against the Aleki, but not she.

Her father’s dotage irritated her. Why should she have to stay behind? Why couldn’t she fight with her father and brothers? She was good with a sword, as she found out when she started sneaking off to the stables to practice with one of the young squires.

His name was Colin, and he had taught her to use a sword well. He was out there now, fighting. Mai closed her eyes. What if one of them died? Her dear brothers, her loving father, her sweet Colin…

There was a banging at the door. All the women inside froze. Was it their husbands, fathers, friends, or was it the invading Aleki come to claim prisoners?

The knock came again. An old priestess went to the door and opened it a crack to see who was outside. She was flung back an instant later and a tall, broad shouldered Aleki man stood blocking the way.

Some of the women screamed and fled to the other small rooms down the narrow hallways by the cellar. After a moment of shock, Mai flew after them, trying to find herself a hiding spot. She heard more Aleki arrive, their deep course booming off the stone walls.

They were speaking in their native tongue, a harsh, snapping language. Mai shuddered as she heard the conversation quiet, and their footsteps spread out across the room.

Mai had hidden herself in a little nook behind several barrels of wine. She was pressed tightly against the wall and could barely see through a crack between two barrels. A scream sounded off to her left, they had found someone. Mai shrank back as she saw one of the Aleki dragging a young priestess down the hallway.

The girl was screaming her head off and bawling loudly. She was begging him not to hurt her, but Mai doubted that he understood what she was saying; even if he did, she doubted he would care. A lock of her golden blonde hair dropped down in front of her eyes and she swept it aside just as she heard another scream to her right. She couldn’t see who the poor girl was, but she could hear the deep chuckle of the Aleki who found her. Mai crept back as far as she could and curled up.

More screams sounded out over the hour as Mai hid behind the wine barrels. She couldn’t see where the girls were being taken, or how many they had caught. Mai was crying now, the broken body of her nurse laid out in the middle of the hall. She had hidden in a closet and found.

She tried to fight off the Aleki, but he gathered her up and snapped her neck. Mai had almost cried out, but she knew that she’d be captured in a heartbeat if she did. Mai closed her eyes and wept for her nurse.

A barrel smashed open not far from her. And then another. Mai stared up wide eyed as she saw an Aleki checking the wine barrels. If he checked them all he would find her. Mai stopped breathing; she felt her body shaking. Another barrel was moved.

She had one more before he would be able to see her. Time slowed as the barrel next to her began moving forward, a bearded face framed by long black hair came around the barrel. Mai sobbed quietly as the man smirked at her. She scrambled away from his large hand, which made him frown.

He moved another barrel and came after her. Mai wished she had a sword, but the one she used when she practiced with Colin was still down in the stables. Mai felt the man grab her hair and she tried to get up quickly so he wouldn’t rip her hair out. He barked something roughly at her and pulled her along behind him, heading in the same direction the other girls had been taken.

Mai was thrown into the room and heard the clanging of the heavy door behind her. The elder priestesses sat together in one corner and the older women wandered among everyone checking for wounds. Most of them were crying, one girl in particular was wailing in a corner. Mai sat down with her back against the wall.

She cried as she realized that her brothers and her father must be dead. It hit her hard, and a sob wracked her body. She was alone in the world now, none of her family was there to help her.
