Chapter One

Rae crossed and uncrossed her legs nervously, watching the door to the diner like a hawk. She was supposed to be meeting with her long time mentor and family friend, David, and he was late. She had been asked here by him and had managed to fit in the time to see him, since he had said it was urgent. She couldn\'t think of what he could possibly want from her, he had been nothing but helpful through her years of break-ups, make-ups, and other trials of being a teenager. In fact, he had been thrilled to help her through her issues with sex, offering suggestions to make things go smoother, and educating her about other forms of intimacy. Lately things had dropped off slightly between them, and Rae was starting to feel uncomfortable with their discussions. David was, after all, older than her father and married to boot, and she knew he didn\'t educate his daughter in the same manner.

Finally David strolled through the door, exactly 7 minutes late. He spotted her in a booth by the window furiously checking her watch and scanning her menu. He made eye contact and gave her a warm smile, which she returned easily, quickly forgetting her anger about him being late. Rae sprang from her seat to give him a giant hug and he lifted her from the ground as he hugged her back.

\"It\'s good to see you after so long. You\'re very much a sight for sore eyes. How have you been getting along since you\'ve been back from college?\" he inquired of her after seating himself and opening the rather large menu before him.

\"Well, you know how things are with my mother, and she never really changes her tune as far as I\'m concerned. I miss all of my friends at school, but they\'re all home now too, so there\'s no use complaining about it, and work seems to be happy that I\'ve returned. They can use the help, so I hear,\" Rae replied happily.

They scanned the menus and discussed their options, both settling on Deluxe Burgers and Diet Coke and waited for the waitress to come by for their orders, making idle chit chat. The waitress came, introducing herself as Jo-Ann and assuring them that if they needed anything at all that she would take care of it immediately. Collecting the menus, she walked over to the next customers being seated and hurried off with their drink order.

\"So David,\" Rae said, turning the conversation to a serious note, \"I was really concerned when I heard from you, you sounded really panicked in your email. What\'s going on? Is everything okay?\"

\"Oh, God yes,\" he said, smirking. Rae eyed him suspiciously, but he continued. \"Really! Everything\'s fine. I just wanted to inquire as to what you\'re doing for your 19th birthday.\"

She raised an eyebrow at him and was slow to answer. \"Well, I don\'t have any plans as of yet, it\'s always difficult having a summer birthday since it\'s almost impossible to round up your friends to have a decent party, and even if I could get people to come, my mom wouldn\'t let me have them, so that makes things limited. I\'m probably going to go out for a movie and some chinese food with a friend,\" she said. \"Why do you ask?\"

\"Well,\" he said, smiling in spite of himself, \"It turns out that I have an extra ticket to Florida, since my wife decided not to come. She hates airplanes and doesn\'t want to drive for 24 hours to get there.\" Rae nodded. She knew about Cheryl\'s fear of airplanes, she had the unpleasant experience of being on one with her once. \"So anyway, I wanted to know if you\'d like to join us. Jeff\'s bringing a friend with him, and he said something about renting a car and exploring upstate, and Michelle asked one of her friends to come as well. They\'ll be spending most of their time at Universal and Disney and since she just got her license she\'ll be wanting to drive there herself. That just leaves me with no one to hang out with and nothing fun to do. So what do you say?\" he finally asked, his long winded explanation coming to a close.

Rae was floored, and she didn\'t know how to respond. Luckily for her, though, she didn\'t have to immediately, as the waitress came over with their meal and fussed over them for several minutes. She took the time as a reprieve and tried to come up with an answer for David, who was looking at her expectantly.

\"Hang on a minute, I have to let this sink in, plus our food will get cold if we don\'t eat it now, and I don\'t know about you but I\'m starving,\" Rae finally said with a smile. David frowned and then buried his face behind his burger, trying to hide his abrupt change of emotions.

They ate in silence, broken only by their pesky waitress, who seemed to think that their silence was a reaction to bad food and/or bad service. David finally had to tell her off to get her to stay away and Jo-Ann hurried off, muttering to herself.

During the meal, Rae thought about David\'s offer. It made sense for her to go. She wasn\'t going to do anything different here for her birthday than any other day and she was going to be seeing her best friend almost daily besides. She knew her mother wouldn\'t mind, knowing that David\'s children were coming, Jeff was a year older than her, and Michelle two years younger, and would probably encourage her to go. Her only hesitation was David\'s intentions. While she was sure he was only looking out for her well being, something in the way he looked at her feared he might want to take their friendship to the next level and that was almost too weird to think about. To her, he had always been Dave Shapiro, trusted friend and confidant, a member of her synagogue and his daughter best friends with her little sister. Still, despite all of that, she couldn\'t think of a good reason to turn down his wonderful offer, so after several minutes and half a burger\'s worth of deliberation, she caught his gaze and said, \"I would love to go with you to Florida. Just give me all the details and I\'ll be packed and ready to go.\"

David\'s eyes sparkled with happiness across the table. He was more than thrilled that she had decided to come, he had planned it this way, hoping that she would take the bait, knowing that his wife Cheryl wouldn\'t come, and scheduling it on her birthday. The trip was just a few weeks away, and her birthday, June 16th, was bound to be one she remembered for a long time to come.
