Meet Randy
Chapter One: Meet Randy
\"I\'m sorry, Randy. Really, I am. Please forgive me,\" pleaded Jeff Billings,
\"Oh, he\'s sorry.\" Randy Wilson looked in disgust though her tears at Billings, then at the policeman who was cuffing him. \"We can let him go now, Officer. He\'s sorry. He\'s sorry that he ruined my fucking life!\" She turned to Billings again and slapped him with all the strength she possessed. \"Sorry isn\'t good enough!\"
Randy ran from the courthouse steps and jumped into her metallic blue Bonneville. Shifting it to overdrive, she stomped on the gas, almost hitting a reporter in the midst of her rage and grief, and drove until she reached the main highway. From there she sped to her apartment near the university. She went into the building, walked straight passed Emily, the desk clerk, pushed the recall button for the elevator and waited. She drew a deep, shaky breath.
\"Randy, get a grip on yourself,\" she commanded sternly. The elevator doors parted slowly with a loud ding. She stepped inside and punched the button for the 5th floor.
She wiped her eyes with the back of her hand and, when the doors parted again, stepped out and walked into apartment 546. She unlocked the door and stepped inside, looking around.
There were flowers occupying every spare spot in the apartment with little notes attached.
My deepest sympathies;
I\'m always here if you need me;
Hang in there. You\'ll be fine. Life goes on.
And, on the other counter, was a picture. She picked it up longingly and stared at it.
The picture was of Randy and her boyfriend, Todd Crandall. It had been taken the previous year, when Randy had turned 18.
A tear dripped onto the glass casing and she realized she was crying again. For the past few months Randy had avoided thinking about anything recent. Anything eventful from the past three months was too painful to think about on a regular basis. But now it was finally over. She could deal with it now.
She drew herself a warm, steamy bath, stripped and lowered herself slowly into the tub.
Randy and Todd had been a great couple. Prom king and queen; captain of the football team and head cheerleader; the classic \'item.\' If you had asked anyone who was even remotely acquainted with them, they would have said without hesitation that Randy and Todd were made for each other. They had been voted >The Couple Most Likely To= by their graduating class. Her parents had idolized her charismatic boyfriend. They treated him like one of their own. If Todd Crandall and Shelly and Ray Wilson hadn=t been brutally murdered three months earlier by Jeff Billings, Randy=s obsessive ex-boyfriend, her life would have been perfect.
That day had been the last of the trial. Billings had been sentenced to life in a maximum security facility in Alberta.
But it was over, and she would be fine.
